Wall Connector repair?

I have used a wall connector with my MX for 2.5 years- it died a few weeks back. I called the SC and they said they would send a tech out to check it, but could not repair it. I replaced it with a new one. So, now i have a wall connector that seems in great shape, but needs repair. Does anyone have any ideas as to what i can do with this device? Thanks.

You could replace the guts with OpenEVSE hardware. There's also a good chance that if you took it apart and did a careful visual inspection, you could find an obviously blown part or a loose connection. I'm also sure you could get something on eBay for it as it sits. The cable alone is worth a good amount. Also, Tony at QuickChargePower could probably repair it for you.

Visual inspection revealed nothing -everything looked normal. Unfortunately, the replacement is a bit different (black body model) so i could not do the side-by-side on the innards that i would like. You are right that the cable alone should be worth something. Thanks for the suggestion about Tony.

If you give a more concise description of the failure, folks might be able to tell you what's wrong. Does the WC show any lights? Does the car think it's plugged in? Do either the WC or the car display an error?

No lights on WC, and car did not think it was plugged in. There was power going into the WC. Reset did nothing. No obvious problems inside such as burned components or melted wires. What other observations will help folks tell me what is wrong?

Now that i have replaced the unit and charging is not an issue, i really would like some ideas as to what to do with this device. The cable alone should have some value, but not really to me. Thanks for all your help.

It should have been a warranty repair. In my case that was what they did, except they would not cover any installation labor. I installed mine myself anyway, so not a big deal. I had to return the defective unit to Tesla after I made the swap.

There is little value in a dead WC. If you can harvest the cable and vehicle connector, that might save you in the future. But it also could have been the problem. I think I would try to turn it into a warranty issue. In that case, you have to give the bad one back.

The HPWCs are designed to handle high power (at least for homes) at up to 80A of constant current.

If you have an HPWC that needs repair, that you aren't using - see if the local Service Center wants it - if not - probably best to trash it...

Tesla replaced our 2013 HPWC with a new one when our 2018 X 100D came home - because of the incompatibility between MCU 2 and the older chargers (something they need to fix, since there are quite a few old HPWC's being used as destination chargers). I had them take the old one with them, since we had no use for it.

I had my gen 1 wall connector stop charging my new 2018 model S last week. It was the original wall connector I had for my 2016 model S. I asked my local service center what to do and they told me I needed to purchase a new wall connector as mine was out of warranty. I wasn't happy with that solution so I called the Tesla charging specialist phone number. That person was awesome. within 10 seconds he told me that there was a KNOWN incompatibility with the old gen 1 wall connector and the new Teslas.

He immediately got my Tesla account info and address. They are already shipping me a brand new Gen 2 wall connector free of charge. He also told me that I don't have to send back the old wall connector although it's pretty useless to me at this point.

Moral of the story is that sometimes the local service center guys have no idea what they're talking about... Most of the time they are great.

Do you want to sell me your old one?

Hi Didgie,

You could sell it on eBay as NON FUNCTIONAL FOR REPAIR PARTS ONLY...
Like someone said above there is some value in the long cord with the Tesla connector on it.

A warranty replacement sounds better to me...
The Wall Connectors have a 4 year warranty.
Call the charging team at 650-681-6133 and get a replacement.

Depending on what kind of damage it has, it is probably repairable, but the device would become somewhat of a hazard.

You need to go component-by component and examine it for possible damage. Examples of damage include corrosion, loose wires, etc.

I repaired a co-worker of mine's USB-C -> HDMI adapter by removing the plastic cover and scraping of some plastic resin that burned and caused a short circuit. You probably have an issue with the PCB board, so you may be able to find there some deformity that can be scraped off.

Great channel about PCB board repair. He uses a schematic and a multimeter, but don't think you can get those for HPWC.

Hi Shawn, Tesla did replace and refit a new one but left me with the faulty unit. EBAY is a good idea. Thanks.
