Sort of "birthplace of the Roadster"...
Original Tesla HQ was blocks from there...

How "initial" do you want to get? The first office of Tesla Motors was at 845 Oak Grove Ave, Suite 204, in downtown Menlo Park, CA. I visited there in April, 2004. At that point the company consisted of Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning and Ian Wright plus a business plan.
 
They also had an office at the "Circle Star (theater)" complex even closer to the mall you were visiting...

and i'll confess that i wasn't really visiting the mall . . . i was buying some car parts in the parking lot . . . i'll post about it, if it ever get's installed ;)

Yes, but before Bing Street there was a different industrial building in the same general area. I can't find the address in my email archive. I visited there in May, 2005. I remember that Martin was particularly proud of a motor test stand that JB and the team had built from surplus parts they had scrounged up. I also remember seeing an early battery sheet design that was much different from the eventual production version.
