whining noise from the rear mirror in refreshed Model S

Hi All,

As soon as I took my refreshed model S last Sunday, I noticed a very distinct whining noise coming from the center. It sounds like a fan is consistently being toggling on and off repeatedly. It only happened when climate control is turned on. see youtube for the location and as well as hear the noise.

To reproduce this issue: make sure climate control is on, and also suggest to manually change the fan speed to 1 to reduce the climate fan noise. the sounds is light but very distinct and comes from the center rear mirror, you may have to wait a while (e.g. 1,2 mins) before it starts to make such noise.

I've brought my car to tesla service to fix other issues while raising questions about this noise. the technician verified the exists of such noise and states the noise is normal and it is a feature of the newly redesigned autopilot camera system in all refresh model S/X, and there is no way to fix it for now.

Maybe I am a little bit sensitive to noise but such whining noise is pretty annoying while I am sitting in my car to do other stuff, May I ask if any other owners of refreshed Model S/X also have such noise? I've tried to search the forum before I post but seems no one mentioned this particular noise.

Thank you!

Very interesting. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned it, but it seems like the front windshield camera module is climate controlled, so what you're hearing is probably a defect related to that system. I didn't realize it until I saw snow all over my windshield except for the camera.

Yeah, I think it is a good idea, but there's a bug in the software for the fan control. It shouldn't turn on and turn off kind of randomly. They should slowly ramp up and down the fan speed as needed. That would make it much quieter. Right now it seems to come on full blast for a split second, then turn off...

Na the 3 and Y do that too. There’s a heating strip there (like on the rear window), and the 3 and Y don’t make any noise from that area.

That comes and goes for me. I usually have the music on so I don’t hear it. But yeah it’s lame. The car is a QC joke.

Yeah. It's constantly present after you press the yoke buttons for the first time. When you first get in the car with it off, the yoke isn't buzzing. It starts buzzing after the first press. So, I'm pretty sure this is a software bug, just like the rear-view camera noise, and the center console light being inverted. All bad software... But we have a blinky holiday light show! woo! (sarcasm)

The conclusion to my service center visit was that the problem exists and Tesla is looking in to a solution via firmware update.

Here is the actual note from the invoice.
Confirmed customer concern, found noise to be originating from triple camera fan. This concern is currently under investigation. No action necessary at this time

Well, at least they acknowledged it is there.

You are not sensitive - this noise is driving me crazy. I want to return the car. What a lame answer from Tesla…
