The truth is the battery pack could provide the 12 volts. However it makes sense to keep the traction energy source physically separate from the 12V battery for safety reasons and complexity.

To be fair, Tesla has done more about this issue than any other carmaker in the world. Their 1st gen Roadster is still the only EV to ever be mass produced without a 12V battery - they reluctantly added cost by including 12V in the 2nd gen.
And not only has Tesla completely eliminated lead acid from their entire product line, but they are the only automaker to have ever produced an EV without lead acid.
