Why you should not ignore Auto Pilot warnings to keep you hands on the wheel

That's not true. Lane Keep Assist in our Honda Odyssey does does do all the steering, just like what we experienced with our AP1 Model X. It does also have a lane departure migration system that does the small correction you mentioned, but that's a separate system in the car.

Ah, ok. I guess different automakers are using the same nomenclature for pretty different systems then. That's doesn't seem ideal for customers. :-\

Autopilot is actually a very fitting term.

For most of history, and even for most planes today (by numbers, if you include light aircraft) autopilot on planes where the term is most well known is an assist tool rather than full autonomous tool. Most will keep your altitude and heading, but that’s about it, definitely requires human monitoring.

But that IS the problem. TRAINED pilots know what autopilot is, and more importantly what autopilot IS NOT. They are trained to use autopilot, no pilot ever uses autopilot without formal training. In addition, pilots learn and understand the systems that make autopilot possible, and they are trained to understand the limitations of those systems.

Your typical car consumer most certainly doesn't know the limitations of autopilot, aviation-based or otherwise. Not every consumer is going to be savvy enough to hop on forums or do research to learn about the systems and limitations of those systems that are in use, it's just not going to happen, people will get hurt/killed.

I thought @Snowstorm 's analogy is pretty accurate. You have trained pilots similar to trained drivers who start utilizing a system called Autopilot that assists the pilot/driver. Also, ppl will get into serious accidents at a proven less rate than drivers not utilizing auto pilot.

Everything is in the manual, all they have to do is read it ;)

I agree with you. Not to mention airplanes got nothing to crash with at 30000 ft, if pilots made a mistake with autopilot.

Like I mentioned before, I really think Tesla should just rename Autopilot with "Lane Keeping Assist" or something similar. That's what it is anyway for the most part. So consumer don't over-estimate the system intelligence thinking that it is a full self-driving car.
