Wickedly quick

Today was my second day with my Model S. I drove to the airport in the am facing another day of rain so I was cautious with the throttle. When I returned from my trip to Ann Arbor this evening, the roads had dried and traffic was relatively light, so I could open it up.

Of course, the Model S attracts a lot of attention, but the multi-coat red raises it to a whole other level. On the 25 mile drive home I had four or five cars tailgating me to get a look. When I was not happy with how close they were following, I just put the pedal to the metal and left them far behind almost instantaneously. The car literally leapt from 55 or so to 80 or 85 before I even noticed. The colleague riding with me was blown away (as were the other cars).

The car is just wickedly quick. I've never driven anything like it.

I look forward to getting up in the morning just to drive it.

if you think that's quick, you should see how quick it is to get from 85 to 120 my old camaro really stuggled to get that high. the P85 does it in a cinch, effortlessly, smoothly, and silently. its mad craziness.

City residents will get a glimpse of the future of transportation next weekend as about 40 electric cars zoom into Edmonton.

The Solar Energy Society of Alberta and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) are holding their third annual electric vehicle showcase this April 27.

The free Future of Transportation Symposium and Car Show will let residents get a hands-on look with 40 electric, hydrogen, and biofuel-powered cars – about twice the number of vehicles that were at last year’s show.

“There are a lot more available now,” says Rob Harlan, executive director of the solar society, when asked about the jump, and a lot more interest in them from the public. “It’s a very popular topic.”

Electric cars were pretty popular in the early 1900s, Harlan says, as evidenced by the 1911 Detroit Electric that will be at the show, but were muscled off the market by cheap fossil fuels. Now, due to concerns about climate change and pollution, electric vehicles are making a comeback. “From a tailpipe standpoint, it’s zero emissions.”

artsci: So glad you have your car and are enjoying it! Can't think of anyone on this forum that was more "prepared"for the cars arrival and anyone more "deserving." Very happy for you. Can't wait to see pics of the actual mods going into the car.

Yes, for me other than those times when you're just driving along thinking what a great car the MS is and then you remind yourself that it's also an EV; I have always thought that the acceleration is by far the most impressive thing. Since I drive like an old man I think of it kind of as a secret weapon. Sort of a "don't MAKE me use this" kind of thing.

Thought this was relevant, I just finished commenting to my wife that as I was driving back to the suburbs from downtown Chicago last night around 11pm (which unfortunately is one of the few times there is minimal traffic, so you can fly) I was driving along at around 75 when a white Tesla flies past. I tried catching up, but couldn't without driving like a lunatic.

The good news, I will be on equal footing come Saturday when mine gets delivered!

If there is one thing I am concerned about, it's the behavior of other drivers around me. When I'm driving on the Interstate (what we call "freeways" 'round these parts), all sorts of cars are driving in crazy ways to look at it from all sides. I'll pass a car, then pull back into my lane, and suddenly someone screams up to the back to see what kind of a car it is, tailgating until they get their picture. Then they swerve over and pull aside of me, get their pictures, honk and wave with the obligatory "NICE CAR DUDE!" before screaming ahead of me to get their picture of the front, before practically locking brakes up to fall back in behind me.

I just grip the wheel and hold on, maintaining my safe driving, but I hate that feeling of the nutjobs around me driving like idiots.

Today a BMW X6 M jumped ahead impressively fast ( no indication of his intent at first) and at the next light he rolled down his window asking what kind of car I was driving and how much HP. Later found out the BMW had 555hp and 0-60 in 4.4 seconds.
I'm not one for racing ( especially if my wife is with me ) but it could have been wickedly close :wink:

In Boston the phrasing would be "wicked close", as in: the Sox came wicked close to a 3 game winning streak. :wink:
