Wife caved! Question for Michiganders and others from cold climates.

Believe Model 3 AWD, long range would be the best choice for your wife.

Tesla is amazing in the snow with great traction and throttle response. Cold weather will reduce range a bit, so that is why the Long Range might be worth considering.

Once she gets used to the Model 3, the Jeep will just sit.

Lived in Michigan. The thought of stopping all the time to fill up a gasser is off-putting. Standing out in the cold at a pump it yourself Gas station. Standing in all that slush and salt saturated mush, waiting for the tank to fill up would be torture.

Her phone app can have the car toasty warm, or pleasantly cool when she arrives at the car. No more worrying if the car will start or if the key will get stuck in the door lock.

The future is Electric.

She loves the Jeep Commander - we are going to have the best and the worst cars for the planet in the same garage.
Ha... speaking of the worst … Most of my neighbors drive F-150, so my 16 mpg MDX was a "green" car here. … it's so funny to see kids puzzled how to open an M3 door in the school's drop off driveway. I wonder for how long I will feel like a unicorn in our neighborhood.

… and I start to consider trading in my MDX (think of your Commander) in the future for model Y. I have an LR AWD, and typically it cycles between 220 miles in the morning and some 150-170 before charging begins (it's in summer though). Perhaps, we would be fine with SR+, but if we have ice storms or some snow, AWD should be useful.

...Maybe I'll just set it up to keep the cabin from getting too hot in the summer sun with the black interior. And let it be in winter

1) I think heat and black used to be a concern when cars were without HVAC but since they do have HVAC, I don't think color matters.

2) If you don't turn off "Cabin OverHeat Protection" feature, I think it helps tremendously. With that feature on, your car will automatically use fan / HVAC to make sure it's never above 104F. Yes, 104F sounds very hot but it is still very much cooler than without "Cabin OverHeat Protection". So, even when I don't pre-HVAC, it's still very good!

Of course, you can always manually use the phone app to remotely turn on your HVAC just before going to the parking lot or to the garage. There's no need to do that way too early before the drive.

Performance model 3 with 18” wheels, standard brakes and suspension, and no spoiler. Nickname is “stealth performance”. It’s not available for normal purchase, but you can request it and maybe get it.
I would would be all over that if I could do that now! The person I'm working with called me a while back - maybe end of last quarter and offered me that config. I just wasn't ready. I was still working on the wife acceptance factor at the time or I would have made it happen somehow.
It's the perfect combo for me. I love the acceleration but the wife doesn't like the ride of the 3P. It would be absolutely compelling for me in MI to not have performance suspension/wheels, keep the juice of the 3P and save some moola.
If you have more tips on how to do this - or a link I would be much obliged. Of course I'm going to search for one but I have a feeling it will be hard to find.

I will do this for sure no matter which one I get. Less worry about mileage loss since it would be summer. 104 is mild compared to what the sun would do to a black interior without it.

1st post be gentle :D

My wife caved in front of my father in law and is letting me buy her an M3 SR+ for my 50th birthday! Yea that sentence does not make a ton of sense but hey - I gotta chose my battles.

I am very excited just to have one in the garage and drive occasionally. I just texted the news to the delivery specialist that I have been talking to and he said he would call me in the morning.

A couple questions if I may...

Question 1 with pretext: I am in Michigan and the wife needs a reliable car for work as a visiting nurse (house calls). Being in Michigan (a non tesla sale state) can I count on the mobile ranger service for most new car problems if/when they arise? I know for the major things the car would have to go away. Will they pick it up and haul it to a service center? Or would I have to drive (if it can still move) it to a service center 2-3 hours away?

Daily scenario by the way is this:
*Mostly city driving
*50 to 80 miles per day
*Snow tires in winter
*Heated garage and charging to 90% nightly.
*8 to 10 stops per day
*I will set the climate control to keep the car warm in the winter and cool in the summer while she is with patients.

Question 2: With the above in mind is SR plus a workable solution - even during the coldest days of winter(10 degrees F)?
For super bad road days I will swap with her and she will get the jeep and I will work from home. Sick patients need care even in a blizzard.

Thanks! I'm super geeked right now if you couldn't tell.

Todd

The scenario you described is pretty much a worst case winter consumption situation - multiple short drives with long periods out in extremely cold weather to cool the car in between.

Driving that cycle, you'll likely see two or even three times the summer consumption, mostly due to heating the cabin each time.

If the money is manageable, I would suggest the LR. I don't know exactly where the consumption will fall, and how much you use the heated seats vs cabin heat will make a difference (heated seats are much more efficient,) but you might find the SR+ limiting on colder days.

This statement puts another question in my mind. Sorry .
I'm ok with no satellite maps but is a bunch more missing on the SR+? I'm counting on having Spotify when v10 hits. I'm not losing stuff like that if I go SR+ am I?

Sadly, yes ... the in-car streaming only is on the LR versions. You can, of course, use Spotify via bluetooth from your phone on any model. For me, the interior upgrades were just as important as the AWD. I didn't want to be without the better audio and connectivity functions.

Rumors are that you may be able to add Premium Connectivity for an annual fee to the SR+ at some point, but that's not guaranteed.

Partial Premium Interior Includes: (This is the SR+)
  • 12-way power adjustable heated front seats
  • Premium seat material and trim
  • Upgraded audio – immersive sound
  • Center console with storage, 4 USB ports and docking for 2 smartphones
Premium Interior Includes: (This is the LR models)
  • 12-way power adjustable front and rear heated seats
  • Premium audio – 14 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 amps, and immersive sound
  • Premium Connectivity (1 year included):
    • Satellite maps with live traffic visualization
    • In-car internet streaming music and media
    • More frequent over-the-air updates via cellular
    • Internet browser
  • LED fog lamps
  • Center console with storage, 4 USB ports and docking for 2 smartphones

Just to put a wrench in the mix, I live inToronto, so similar weather, we have a 2017 Model X 75D with a range of 381 km (236 miles) when new, now 370 km (230 miles) now at 48,000 km (roughly 30k miles) so very similar range to the Model 3 SR+ and it has not been a problem. We charge it at home every few days or at the supercharger on trips. The efficiency is worse than a Model 3 because of the additional weight of the vehicle so the Model 3 should be even better. On cold mornings we preheat in the garage and also 5 mins before leaving work. It’s very manageable. No regrets. Sure more range is always better but the price difference made it prohibitive. In the dead of winter I still get 70% of my charge. I highly recommend winter tires thought. We’ve traveled to Baltimore in the middle of winter with no issues. There are plenty of superchargers on the highways now and more so than two and a half years ago. With more to come still. We plan to keep our X many many more years. More is not always better!

I'm also a Michigander considering a M3P- or M3P. Leaning towards a M3P- given the low profile/summer tires on the M3P (Last winter was horrible and our roads are even worse), but can't find the right ext/int color combo. I can find the right color combo in a M3P, but it's about $6k more for upgraded brakes (minor), lower suspension (very minor), spoiler (don't care) and pedals (dumb) AND I'll need to spend $1500-2000 on a set of winter tires/wheels/TPMS. Decisions, decisions....

The end of quarter promo of 2-year free supercharging isn't really a benefit for me since the closest supercharger is almost 40 miles away and not planning on a lot of distance driving.

Service is also a leap of faith...

But the test drive in Chicago earlier this week was AMAZING.

All about the usage pattern. I've done trips in deep winter weather in an X75D myself - and once the car is warmed up, the penalty isn't bad - I saw ~15% more energy in freezing weather, a little more as it got colder.

But the first twenty minutes of a cold start, with a cold cabin and a cool pack?

That's way, way higher. So the planned usage to visit a bunch of folks for an hour or so and then drive a few miles is going to be a lot worse than your road trip in terms of consumption, mostly to heat the cabin.

Might still be fine in the SR+, might not - we'd need someone driving a similar profile in similar cold to weigh in.

I don't agree with everyone who says AWD is a must in snow. If you live in the mountains - sure, but not in the midwest. I'll take a RWD car with winter tires over AWD with all-seasons any day. If you do go RWD, you should plan on getting another set of wheels with good winter tires.

The question of SR+ vs. LR depends on your wife's tolerance. If you're already talking her into this purchase than SR+ might be pushing it.
