Winnemucca, NV to Boise ?

Chiming back in. Rocky's approach was what I did on my way back to Cali from Boise. Sat for an hour having breakfast at Say When and had about 30 miles added (I only have a single charger in my 85D). Worked out perfectly. My concern was that the charger would be out of service and i would need a contingency plan. I did call the Sawtooth in Orovada as they have an RV park but speaking with the attendant made it seem that it would have been hit or miss on getting a spot to charge. Thankfully, I didn't need to stop for a charge there. As an aside, Say When would be a perfect spot for one of the smaller superchargers! Unfortunately, no pending superchargers here on Teslas map. This is the only stretch of the trip that causes any kind of range anxiety.

2018 update:

This route is much easier than the early days now that many of us have 90Ds and especially 100Ds and there are superchargers in Boise and Baker City. That being said, I don't believe the level 2 charging options between Winnemucca and Boise have changed a whole lot over the years. The single charger at the Say When is still the go to.

I went Winnemucca to Baker City at the end of April in my new S100D. With temps in the 70s and 80s, going Winnemucca to Boise would have been no problem, but I didn't really want to drive into Boise at rush hour if I didn't have to, so I stopped for about an hour and a half at the Say When. My eyes could have deceived me but I believe I saw a Leaf or some other electric car pulling out of the parking lot as I drove in. I was fairly surprised by that, but then the car was gone before I could truly verify. The stall was empty and I plugged in and began my charge. I considered leaving a note as to the duration of my charge, but the "town" is so tiny that I figured someone could ask around and find me fairly easily if they really wanted to. I was wearing my Tesla hat and sitting in the diner at the casino for most of my charge anyway.

If my life depended on it, I'm pretty sure I could have gone Winnemucca to Baker City in one shot with the long range of the S100D and some hypermiling, but instead I decided I didn't need the range anxiety and would like to enjoy the A/C rather than sweat it out, so the stop in McDermitt did the trick.

We did that trip last year for the eclipse from SoCal to Boise and Weiser then OR and back down in our 70d. No issues.

I'm planning on doing that trip next week in MS 60. How is the drive from Winnemucca , Say When to Boise at night? If I went straight my trip planner says approximately 16 hours. I have another person who can take turns driving, but prefer to not stop overnight somewhere. Thanks.

I'm a little confused on your question. Are you driving from Glendale up to Boise then and asking about whether you can use that shortcut through McDermitt at night?
I don't know the casino hours, but there's no security on the parking lot or the wall connector that I can tell, so it should be accessible any time around the clock, so you should be able to use it.
Time-wise, I just put the route into EVTripplanner for an S60, and it says about 225 rated miles used going northbound. So if you could charge up about as full as you can get in Winnemucca (195-200-ish?) then you'd have to add the difference when you're there in the middle. If you have dual chargers, it would certainly be faster, because it is a 70 or 80 amp one.

I didn't entirely understand the question either, but I will say that is a high degree of difficulty trip in an S60. (I'm assuming you are travelling from Glendale, CA and not Glendale, AZ.) If you don't have much experience doing road trips in that car, then I would recommend just taking the easy route through SLC on I-15. It's about 1.5 hours longer in terms of driving but it's all superchargers so you'll never have to stop to slow charge. Also, when you stay on the interstate, you get the added benefit of having cell coverage the vast majority of the time.

If you do take the route through McDermitt, you'll want to be sure to charge in Mammoth Lakes. The Lone Pine to Hawthorne stretch is tempting but if you come up short, you are screwed as there is nothing out there. I don't think you'll have a problem charging in McDermitt late at night. The worst case scenario would be that someone else plugs in there and goes to sleep, but there isn't much in the way of lodging in that "town" so if they do that, they'd probably be sleeping in the car and you could wake them up to unplug :) In any case, that scenario is unlikely because that charger probably only gets used a few times a month.

Lastly, the stretch from McDermitt to the Boise supercharger would be very tough in a 60. The good news is if you come up short, you will be in the western Boise suburbs, so electricity should be available somewhere, but that would be kind of a crappy way to end your trip. There are a couple RV park campground type places in between McDermitt and Boise, but I wouldn't expect any of them to be available late at night.

There are some SUPER long stretches and a reg S60 (don't know your degration or current 100% range) will be pushing it unless you drive 55 or under for some of those legs.

A 70D with 245mi had no issues but was running down to 11% at 70+mph on some legs and our car was LOADED down heavy too!

Use the trip planner website and you should be fine but what were you exactly talking about doing again this year?

If you're in Glendale,CA (I'm in Burbank)... that leg from Lone Pine to Hawthorne is a real dosey! and I don't think a S60 would make it without stopping in Mammoth

I don't really see that as too much trouble. I just plotted McDermitt to the Boise Supercharger on EVTripplanner, and it's 155 rated miles without even turning down the speed ratio. If you turn it down to 0.9, it's 141 rated miles. Anyone road tripping in a 60 knows they are going to have to be patient anyway, so a full charge is pretty much expected. But yes, some of the old 60's have some pretty hefty degradation. I was expecting mid 190's max charge instead of the original 208, but perhaps that's too optimistic. And yes, the place where you come in on that west side is the city of Nampa, and there are a couple of car dealership places with J1772 stations, so it's not bad if you need to stop a little earlier than making it to the Supercharger.

Not sure this is relevant anymore but I did this route with a 90D in one shot with charge to spare at 70mph constant to avoid a speeding ticket of course. Got to Boise with around 14 miles range left. Granted I did it at night summer time so no AC needed and no slow down/speed up in traffic. I think down the road I will need to stop in between at that casino midway because of degraded battery or go slower. Just make sure to charge to 100% at winnemuca before taking off. Did not try the return trip that way so cant say.

I say look at evtripplaner and you can pretty much tell if you can make it or not.

Based on the elevation change, you probably would have come up about 13 rated miles short going in the opposite direction. Of course you probably would have gone slower and made it, but it would have been a bit of a white knuckler.

I have an email from Tesla about a week ago, that they sent 2 Destination Chargers to Just Say When and are waiting for owner to install. Email contents posted in a different thread.

My S75D is on order. We just drove that in our ICE and the Jordan Valley RV park is closed/defunct.

We are going back to Roseville, Ca from Star, Id next week and planning to stop for lunch at Just Say When. Hopefully I will have an update on Destination chargers

Yeah that RV park looked like it was closed in April but I wasn't planning on charging there so I didn't stop. Also wasn't sure if it was still closed for winter or what. Thanks for the update.

This really underscores the need for some redundancy at Say When. Getting a 2nd charger there will be necessary before next summer's driving season. While it's unlikely that someone else is plugged in now, I expect that to change when there are 100s of thousands of model 3s on the road. And if someone else is plugged in you are sort of screwed.

Also, even with extra chargers in McDermitt, the leg from Boise up to McDermitt is difficult in a 75 or lower or a short range 3.

Awaiting delivery of our S75D which may come before we head from Roseville (Sacramento, CA area) to Star, ID late this month. We will likely take the Chrysler 300 even if I do take delivery because I do not want to introduce the wife to Tesla road trip with this particular route. We contracted for a house to be built in Eagle, ID and will be moving to ID in March.

When we went this route last month Say When Casino had not yet installed the Destination Chargers. The Jordan Valley Sunny Ridge RV park is defunct but there is a trailer/RV one on Google calls "Pelota" that may still be operating. I hope to stop and eat at the Say When cafe on the trip, hopefully, meet the owner to inquire about the Destination Chargers. Rocky_H, if you have any info on the owner that might be helpful please PM me.

There is a casino in between with a 80A tesla charger. You might need the adapter. Look at plugshare. Unless they removed it.

Well, right, but even if they don't have those destination ones extra, they do already have a high amp J1772 station that's always available. I see that through July and August people have still been using it on Plugshare, so it's still a pretty good setup right now. Your 75D would have the 48A onboard charger. My old one only has the 40A, so you'd get even faster charging than I did.

I open up Plugshare every once in a while to scan the routes near me to see if some new charging resource has been added, and a new Big Deal finally got added to this Winnemucca to Boise route on US highway 95, so I’m digging up a few of these old threads to add a comment to them. There is finally a CHAdeMO station available!

PlugShare - Find Electric Vehicle Charging Locations Near You

It’s in McDermitt, NV, and the stations are from Greenlots. They have two cabinets that are the dual-cable CCS + CHAdeMO ports. It looks like it just opened up in the past week or two, and the only checkins and pictures are from Chevy Bolts, so I don’t know if any Teslas have been there yet. It says it’s 50kW power level, so hopefully the 125A CHAdeMO version, rather than 100A limited.

The more the better! I'm looking forward to when we get our Rivian and would love to take this trip back up through there to the Snake River and other area we hit during the solar eclipse.

Just don't want to be stuck on 50kW CCS but then, SpC charging has been sucking lately also
