Speaking of which, I just had my MCU replaced. I had to go run whatsmyua to see if it reported the new hardware...which it didn't, but the reason I was wondering is because the replacement is considerably faster than the previous one.

Did Tesla make any changes at all to the 2011 chipset? Did they up the clock speed or any other changes?

Could it be that the newer MCU has faster flash memory/interface?

If the OP is right about the new MCU impacting value/price then one should see Tesla inventory cars show a big price reduction. Anyone seen that?

There have always been price reductions at certain points so a price reduction now may or may not be attributable to the MCU.

The real price reductions we will see for inventory cars will be when the interior refresh comes out.

Who knows, maybe are are now in the midst of the interior refresh already and bits of pieces of the interior will continue to updated. So far we have seen the visor lights and the MCU. The Model 3 style vent will be a part of the big interior update for the Model S interior.

Did Tesla tell you that was why it was giving you a $4K discount? Did you ask if you could get it retrofitted and forgo the discount?
They didn't give me a reason. By they I mean the delivery specialist. He just said it was a discount. I asked several times if it was due to any impending updates that my car would not have, and he said that it wasn't and that my car was going to be fully up to date. Obviously he didn't know what he was talking about because it wasn't fully up to date. I'm not particularly mad about not getting the vanity lights or the upgraded MCU since it saved me $4000 (plus another $7,000 because if I got my car after April 1st I would've had to pay an extra 5% in taxes). I'm more annoyed that the delivery specialist either lied to me or reassured me without having the proper knowledge about impending updates. Initially the customer sales rep also told me that my car would have the interior refresh but didn't specify what. So it was two people on Tesla's side that told me the wrong information and it has made me very sour about dealing with Tesla in the future.

I asked about a retrofit but the delivery specialist doesn't know anything about it.

The cost issue seems secondary to Tesla's continued random update cycle. The new MCU is not a deal breaker for the car, but it will continue to make me and many of my friends nervous about pulling the trigger on a new car. Will there be a big refresh in June or not? The best analogy I can give is Apple rolling out a new Iphone with no warning. Picture if the Iphone X just "came out" 2 months after the Iphone 8? A friend just picked his new car today and he knows nothing about the MCU topic and certainly will not care, but I would LOVE a notice about major updates, LOL.

With these new MCU's and no possibility of a retrofit, that will easily knock 4-5k off the trade in/resell value.
Dude! I’m totally with you on this. F’n Tesla and all these improvements. Elon and the rest of those TSLA clowns should follow the business model of Motorola. After all, my 2005 Razr flip phone is still the best phone ever and look at how stupid Apple looks with their fancy Iphone. That’ll learn ‘em! Motorola Razr - Wikipedia

It isn't a matter of improvements but the lack of communication. Since you mentioned the iPhone, imagine Apple released the iPhone X two months behind the iPhone but didn't tell their customers.

Except we're talking about a product 150x more expensive than an iPhone.

Okay, I imagined it. Now what?

If you don't like what you are buying for the price you are paying, don't buy it. Once you do, don't complain. Simple.

I bought in early 2014 before the next people got AP hardware. I didn't complain because I got exactly what I paid for. It's all about attitude and we create our own realities.

Best not to have an attitude similar to the little kid at school who can't enjoy his one cookie if the kid next to him got two.

(plus another $7,000 because if I got my car after April 1st I would've had to pay an extra 5% in taxes).

Can you please explain this one to me? Is the NDP imposing a new tax hike I don't know about? Thanks.

Cars over $125k MSRP will be charged another 5% tax for a total of 20% (up from 15%). Cars over $150k MSRP will be charged another 10% tax for a total of 25% (up from 15% as well). This kicks in April 1st.

Thanks. That's news to me but not surprising for a NDP government. I thought 15% was bad when I bought. Nothing like punishing those who work hard. With the NDP provincially, and Trudeau targeting small businesses federally, I'm about ready to retire.

'25 per cent is a big number': B.C. luxury car dealers brace for impact of new surtax

I work as a physician and let me say that my opinion of the NDP and the Liberals took a nosedive this year. I work hard for my money and the tax increases have been brutal for me.

On average, I touch the touchscreen around 2 times a day (coinciding with the start of my commute in the morning and evening) only to change the Slacker station under my Favorites. On some days I don't even do that. I used to touch it more to enable the heated steering wheel and/or seat, but recent updates have enabled that setting to carry over, which is great. I use the steering wheel controls to skip songs and make calls, as well as my phone mounted right next to the steering wheel for quick read/reply to emails and messages, a lot more often.

The point is, I couldn't care less about a faster MCU. What I have now is way more than sufficient for what I need. And I also couldn't care less what the resale value of my car is as I'm planning to keep it for at least the next 3-4 years. Who the hell knows what will happen at that point? There are other better things to worry about in life. But to play along, whenever I decide to sell it, if a potential buyer is really OCD about having the new MCU, not sure if they'd really be interested in my car anyway. But I'm not in the slightest worried about there being other buyers who also similarly couldn't care less about having the new MCU based on their needs.

I super wish Tesla would just stop with all the improving of things so that we can dispense with this needless continued “shafting” of literally the most satisfied owners of any car brand on earth.

WHY DOES TESLA HATE THEIR OWNERS SO MUCH

The thing is with a year model based car if you buy the car at the end of the year you get it for cheaper because the new model with the new features will be out in x number of week or days. With Tesla you end up paying for last gen stuff but at full price

I have quite the opposite reaction to the OP.

Obsolete systems are the curse of modern cars.
The worst thing by far about otherwise fuine
modern cars is the vast array
of relentlessly lousy screens/interfaces.

There is no limit to the levels of bad,
and the only recourse is to buy a new car.
Then the new one is maybe only two years behind, if you get lucky.

Except now, except for one company.
This is a fundamental change, unique to the brand.

Seriously under rated move
Tesla has quietly changed
a very basic element of the game

Again.

I really like the way they just quietly rolled it out.
Great.
