18" Wheels + EV Tires gained ~18% range

Switched from 19" sport wheel with (new-ish) junk Hertz tires.

Was surprised by the magnitude of the improvement, around 40 miles additional range.

Maybe I missed it but I hadn't seen a recent post in which both the wheel swap to 18" Aeros
and Sailun eRange happened at once. Moderators please move if appropriate.

Using the same out&back route, 40 miles, ~same temp and same GPS speed of 72 MPH
we went from 259 Wh.mi to 213 Wh/mi. We're quite pleased and this has held up
over several commutes since then. Just under 40 mile 'real world' range improvement.
Used wheels ($500 with no covers or TPMS) and about $700 for the tires 235R45-18.
Aero covers were about $50 locally.
We mainly wanted the range increase,
saving money will only happen if the sport wheels sell for more than expected.

Just to head off what's to come: Yes we have one of those Hertz cars.
Yes we changed two variables at once, the results are 'invalid'.
Yes they're not as good as (insert expensive tire here) and we'll die a horrible death.
Yes we bought tires from Vietnam and surely deserve a good talking-to.
Worse yet we bought them from Walmart, but what would you put on a $15K Tesla?

Charging two Teslas

We have one model 3 and are thinking of ordering another. To my surprise it seems Tesla does not have any solutions for charging two Teslas simultaneously (this would be an incentive to buy two Teslas rather than from different brands). The only way is manually moving the cable from one to the other. I had hoped you could connect both to a charger at the same time, and then some software could manage the charging (first charge one, then other other when the first is charged etc). Are there any such solutions?

We also have a Tesla powerwall and use the 'charge on solar,' and we would like to continue using that, so if it were a third party solution it would have to work with 'charge on solar.'

Full FSD Free Trial: Why I'd never buy it . . . ever.

Never in a million years. Like many I received the free FSD trial in my 2023 Model 3 Performance. I accepted. And though I still have a few days left will not sign up for it - and - from a safety perspective - would never use it.

Opinion: [Yes - opinion based on my driving it all over town]
[My driving experience - I am an aggressive driver. I have owned a 911 for ten years. I own an FX4 3.5L 2019 F150. I also own a 2013 off road upgraded Wrangler JK. I have done Bondurant. I have road driving skills and off road driving skills. I am an instrument rated pilot and have a tail wheel endorsement - I am used to having a fast OODA loop and drive the same way. I have never had an accident, and have never been convicted of a moving violation - my insurance record is pristine. That said - I don't want anyone monitoring my driving because an insurers bot would determine after 50 years of perfect driving I'm a horrible risk. Competence is shown by facts, not actuarial conclusions based on G force and throttle use.]

FSD stinks. Two words. Its slow, buggy, inefficient, operates last second, scares the crap out a driver who is looking three cars ahead, and, sometimes, disconnects when it gets confused.

Specifics:
We have an intersection where there are three lanes. I come in from the T. There are two travel lanes. The right lane coming from the left exits right and there is a physical barrier to prevent people from continuing. The entry lane from the T is dedicated for 100 yards - with rubber traffic cones preventing anyone from exiting the lane or coming into the new lane. FSD literally gives up and disconnects at this intersection every single time. While many humans also hesitate here because they cannot process what they are seeing - FSD gives up, after approaching the intersection at 10 mph and being unable to process the lanes and entry.

Next, changing lanes. FSD is like a blind and deaf 85 year old in a 65' Coupe D'Ville. If there is a gap in the lane next to you that requires a simple 3-5mph acceleration, you'll never make it - the car ALWAYS slows down first and will not speed up and will not make a lane change in less than 10 seconds - it takes FOREVER to decide its safe to go. If you've ever been in LA or NYC traffic and needed to change lanes you need to jump in the lane before the other car occupies the space - FSD would NEVER do that.

Curves: If you are coming arounbd a curve with an empty lane in front of you but the other lane or lanes are backed up, FSD will slam on the brakes to stop 'seeing' a car in front of you even though there is no one in your lane. This is not a complex algo - 'see the lane,' see where the vehicles actually are - a computer that it 10,000x faster than a human mind should be able to do this.

Speed limits: Yes - I exceed the limit occasionally along with 95% of other drivers - beeping to get my attention that FSD will not brake is not helpful. All the beeping for every little thing is annoying - and distracting as hell.

Following distances: FSD is jerky - it wants to maintain a distance but is slow to accelerate and then slow to decelerate. In the average scenario where I could simply remove my foot from the accelerator and coast to a stop /hold - the car continues to use throttle and hits the brakes once it ascertains the closing rate is increasing. Likewise, on the highway, it slows down when it sees a faster vehicle and then takes its sweet time accelerating back up to speed - and sometimes never does. even basic autopilot has this issue. This is atypical to how a driver operates a vehicle. I see a red light I start to feather a throttle to come to a stop before coming to the light or line of cars - thats efficient driving.

To anyone who likes their self driving program - I'll dare you to a trip. Anywhere - rush hour, not rush hour. We start from the same point and same time - and I'll bet you that even if we drive the same speeds I'll still beat you to the destination and have more power remaining. . . . and not have to see my BP jump up because the car turns into a turn slow or disconnects or comes roaring up on group of stopped cars and slams on the brakes.

This is not how a trained driver drives - and certainly not how most humans drive either.

Free FSD trial ended enhanced graphics remain

My free FSD trial ended yesterday but the cool enhanced graphics are still there.
I like the graphics but never use cruise control or the FSD.
I like driving the car spiritedly and only drive locally for 15-20 minutes at a time.
The 99.00 subscription price was tempting but I thought I would wait until the trial expired.
The car did an update yesterday but it didn't change the graphics.
Tesla sent me a notice the trial has expired today so I will see if the enhanced graphics remain
after the next update.

Supercharger - Salem, NH

Tesla is working with the Salem NH Planning Board for approval to install a supercharger at the Rockingham Mall near the existing Electrify America site. The address noted on the exhibit displayed at a recent planning board shows as 81 Rockingham Park Blvd, Salem, NH 03079. Discussions at the September 12th and 26th meetings centered around site restrictions with respect to proximity to EA site, not losing any parking spaces, plantings, etc... This was presented in both meetings in the less formal "public matters" portion of the meeting providing an opportunity for informal board discussion on the project, and also indicating a public hearing path is not required to move the project forward.

Did anyone go from a Raven to the refresh? Thoughts?

Im looking to go from a MYP to an X but having a hard time deciding which year. Im buying used. It will either be a 2021 Performance, or a refresh. If you have owned both could you tell me which one you like more and some of the pros/cons? I will swap the yoke out immediately if I get a refresh so I dont care about that.

Are Teslas talking to each other?

In an ideal world, all these FSD cars talking to each other would be the best way to ensure that the intentions of each car is clearly expressed to others on the road.

That being said, the reason I raised this topic is because I was driving on FSDs yesterday through the slow rush hour traffic, and typically the car keeps at least a car length of space ahead. But yesterday, there was a new Model Y ahead of me, and my car on FSDs was driving like 2 feet behind it as if my car was linked like a train. It was either that sure and confident that moment in time or it was clearly in-sync with the car ahead of me. What say you?

3.0 Battery Longevity

I got my 3.0 upgrade in early October, so it's been about 4 months. In that time, I've put roughly 6K miles on the battery.

When I first got it, I did a couple of range charges both to see what it was showing and also because I had to do a long drive (and then back). The best that I saw was 344 ideal miles with a CAC of 215.04.

Since then, I hadn't needed to do a long drive, so I didn't range charge it. I noticed that the ideal miles in a standard mode charge declined somewhat, from maybe 225 to 217 or so. I looked for the first time in a long while, and the CAC had declined to 201.45, a little more than a 6% loss.

I thought that maybe the problem was that the battery couldn't balance properly with the roughly 75% SOC in ideal mode, so I range charged it, let it sit plugged in for a long time to balance, topped off, and repeated a few times.

The result of this is that the CAC improved to 202.24 (total capacity at full charge 74.36 kWh as opposed to 77.26 kWh new) and the standard range charge is back to 221. However, the best range mode charge I saw was 326, a full 18 miles less than when the battery was new (again, 4 months and 6K miles ago, so not very long ago).

I figure that one of several things may be going on, rated from best to worst in their implications:
1) The 3.0 battery has cells that have a quick initial dropoff in capacity, but then level out for a long while. I know that some of the Model S cells are like this (and I think in that case that Tesla just sells them as if they're at the plateau level). So, I should expect to stay near this capacity for a very long time, and the R80 is really more of an R74.
2) There's something wrong with my particular battery, and Tesla will just replace it for me since it's a dud.
3) The 3.0 batteries lose 30 ideal miles/10k of range (as opposed to ~3.7 in Tom Saxton's study for the 2.0 battery). So at 33K miles a 3.0 battery will have the same capacity as a new 2.0, and quickly descend after that. That is, the 3.0 batteries don't work and I spent $30K making my car be useless earlier than if I'd have kept the 2.0 battery.

I really hope that Tesla didn't screw up in cell selection and it's not #3. Or that if it is that they'll suck it up and fix all of our quickly decaying batteries.

Have any of the other 3.0 owners seen a decrease like this? How much mileage do you have on your new battery?

400GB music scanning speed too slow

Hi all,

I have a 1TB Samsung T7 Shield SSD connected in the glove box.

It has a 500GB Teslacam EXFAT partition and a 500gb EXFAT Music partition.

There's just under 100,000 mp3 files. Unfortunately my 40 minute drive that I do twice per day isn't long enough for it to complete scanning the music.

Does anyone have experience with higher volumes of mp3s? I think i'd be willing to use the centre console if it mounted the music faster, as the glovebox connection is no good in my use case.

Thoughts?

ApplePay disappeared from supercharging wallet?

I have been paying for supercharging using ApplePay since I got the car (Tesla Model 3) in 2019. It last successfully charged the card about three weeks ago. Today, I was told that supercharging was disabled because I had an uppaid charge. I found that ApplePay had disappeared from the supercharging wallet, and, for some reason, it didn't automatically charge my backup card. No reason ApplePay wouldn't have paid, so I went to add it back in and it doesn't seem to be an available method of payment in the App. It IS my default payment method for the Tesla Account (and they had NO trouble charging repairs to it!)

Anyone else have the same experience? Is ApplePay disappearing? Will this happen next time they go to renew my internet services?

2020 MY - TeslaCam Dashcam - USB no longer recognized

I recently updated to 2024.8.4 on my 2020 Model Y with front USB port. I have used the same Samsung SSD T5 for years. I noticed that the TeslaCam icon showed a red X so I unplugged and deleted the files via my laptop. Now, when I plug the USB back in nothing happens. The red X remains and under Safety the options are grayed out. I tried to plug in a basic USB stick and still nothing happened. Anyone else?

M3 windows opened/vented themselves this morning

I just found my car windows in the "vented" position as if that option was clicked in the app. Having checked back through my home security cameras I can see they were closed at 8:30 this morning, but open at 13:30 this afternoon. Unfortunately no motion set off the camera between those times to narrow it down. It's raining here, so the seats are pretty wet. I'm glad I spotted it fairly soon! I'll leave the climate on keep mode for a couple of hours to air the car & dry it out...

TeslaFi & TeslaMate both show the car has been asleep since Sunday evening except 08:36-08:52 this morning, so I guess it probably happened then. I'm 100% certain I didn't accidentally do it as I haven't even used my phone today, let alone the Tesla app... (I'm the only one with the app). I've logged a service request to have Tesla check the car over, just in case.

I don't see any additional info about extra logging in either app, does anyone know if there's a way to query the saved API data a bit more closely to see what may have triggered the windows to open?

Tesla Phone Key

Having an issue with the phone key, not sure if anyone else has had a similar experience.

To clarify, I am specifically referring to the ability to unlock the car via the door handles when the phone key is in range.

The problem is the range on my new phone poses security concerns. I have just changed from an iPhone 15 pro to a Samsung s24 ultra. The iPhone worked as intended, the car would only let you unlock via the door handles when the phone was on you and right next to the car.

The 24 on the other hand seems to allow you to open via the door handles roughly up to 5-6m away. I noticed this as my phone was in my bedroom which sits on the exterior wall closest to my driveway but on the 2nd floor, and I was able to walk up and unlock my car with my phone on charge in my bedroom.

I did a few tests and it works every time, unless I disable the key on my phone. iPhone doesn’t allow this though and has to be right next to the car.

Anyone else experienced this? Surely can’t be right.

2024 Suggestions for Improvement

We have purchased three model x teslas. Two are 2018 units and one is a 2024. We love the cars they have been remarkably problem free.
New tires and a new 12 volt battery serviced by Tesla were our only issues in 6 years. We have some suggestions for improvement on the 2024 model.
We find we are taking our eyes off the road to locate the turn signal buttons on the steering wheel. This was not necessary with the older model since they had levers. Not sure how to make this a more tactile function.
Our second suggestion relates to what gear we are in. Have confused forward and reverse and park a few times. A large visual indicator on the screen for a short interval would make gear selection more positive. We suggest an audible indication for reverse as well.
Our last suggestion is to reduce the available rate of acceleration in reverse gear. We find it too fast and slowing the response down would improve safety.
Again , greatest car we have ever owned.
Thanks,
Lou
