Tesla recalls 2 million vehicles to limit use of Autopilot

So I got into my eight year old P85D this morning and an undismissable alert with a slowly flashing orange (more orange in real life than in the picture) warning triangle appeared (see photo). It tells me that “software will not update until [low voltage] battery is replaced.” There is no...

    2015 P85D Air Suspension failure

Here's my first post in a long time which I've got to make since I too have a 2015 P85D (vin 73xxx) which just had the air suspension fixed. In my case the car had been stored for 18 months back at our Virginia property while we have spent that time up in New Hampshire. We just sold the VA...

    A yoke or a joke?

I would much rather buy the new S than what I think are the alternatives: a loaded EQS580 or e-tron GT RS. The S has better performance, is cheaper, has more cargo space, a better charging network, and looks better (or may be tied on looks with the GT). But the thing I can't get over after...

    New Model S concerns.

I've come to the conclusion that Tesla's problem is that it's a $40B revenue company that's run like a start-up. I see now that back in 2015 when I bought the Model S that I still have and love, all the inventive energy of what was then a much smaller start-up was focused on inventing the key...

    Yoke Steering

If you love it, then more power to you: you have the car controls you want. But I’m too old to try to change my muscle memory on the hope I won’t make a mistake in a difficult driving situation. But the right aftermarket wheel lets us each have what we want.

    Yoke Steering

Ever since Tesla decided to return my $1k deposit after the plaid-plus-cancellation-debacle where they initially refused to refund, I have been feeling better about Tesla and the possibility of buying a refreshed model S. The problem is the yoke wheel, where even though I respect the opinion of...

Tesla Wins Exhibition Section of 2021 Pikes Peak Race

I guess it's not too embarrassing for the race-prepped version of a large, roomy, family luxury(?)-sedan to lose a few places up a twisty road to the race-prepped version of a Porsche GT2 RS (the Clubsport).

Unplugged Performance Pikes Peak Plaid (Plaid Peak) Testing - one interesting note

Great panoramic video of the run. Move the frame a little to the right of dead ahead to see the cliff he was running next to higher up the mountain.

    About that "yoke" steering wheel

From the article on plaid in today's WSJ: "But on a planet with parking decks and drive-thrus, the yoke is a visionary pain in the ass. It is actually quite hard to turn from lock-to-lock with one hand, as you might if you had just bought a cup of coffee in the drive-thru; or if attempting a...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

They just came through by email with a refund! My attitude toward Tesla is improving. I wish they were not wedded to the stalkless yoke, but perhaps that will change. Separately, I just stumbled on the Plaid's Pikes Peak hill climb practice videos on Randy Pobst's Youtube channel. Its...

Unplugged Performance Pikes Peak Plaid (Plaid Peak) Testing - one interesting note

I just stumbled across the video of yesterday's practice on YouTube and came back here to see if there's a thread. Even though I hate the way Tesla handled plaid+, I've got to admit the performance of the plaid on track looks amazing. Of course if I ever tried to explore that performance...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

This thread is an eye-opener for me. Like David29 I have a 2015 AP1 car (P85D). In all that time, the car has only wrestled me for control once (when not on autopilot) and that was only weeks ago. I was on a divided highway in the Virginia countryside that is not limited access so there are...

Tesla changed my Plaid Plus to Plaid

If I had put down either a $50k or $200k (I think there were both) “refundable” reservation a few years ago on an as-yet nonexistent roadster, I would feel a little nervous right now.

Tesla changed my Plaid Plus to Plaid

Exactly the same thing happened to me a couple days ago. Plaid+ reservation was involuntarily converted to plaid, at which point i cancelled and the refund was refused without explanation. It‘s unfortunate that such great cars are made by a company that I will never do business with again.

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

Well i think we can now all see. Look at the new thread: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-changed-my-plaid-plus-to-plaid.231477/ starting with post #4: According to the posts there, all of us whose plaid+ plus orders were involuntary converted to plaid somehow lost our promised...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

The value I put on avoiding aggravation is so high that I will probably die poor. Nevertheless, let's try the experiment. I just had a friendly chat on the support page. Because the conversation was in a small window, my screenshots of the dialog overlap a bit. The only part of the...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

Good luck to you if you think that. I clicked "submit cancellation" and it gave me a screen saying "Refund $0.00" or Total "$0.00" [I should have screen shotted that one but I was too annoyed to have the presence of mind to do so]. And now if I go to my account page my existing P85D is still...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

I looked at my account today and saw the plaid+ was changed to plaid (no surprise) and cancelled the order. Their response is in the screen shot below. So much for my refundable deposit. Everything I said in my earlier rant quoted above now goes double. Goodbye Tesla.

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

This morning I was thinking about why the subject of this thread still really annoys me and I realized that I've been entirely too rational. I've posted on the need for range, and that plaid (as opposed to plaid+) might not give me what I need for my maximum use case - which is a 160 mile round...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

On the range discussion, real range is neither the EPA nor the more liberal European standard. Range is what you get at the worse end of the weather conditions for your particular situation. This is a non-issue in, for example, CA, and not a big deal where I currently live in VA, but I'm...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

This is so very true and is the reason why I will not pay for a "full self driving system" that requires constant monitoring against fluky edge cases. The highway combination of autosteer and adaptive cruise control is lower stress because the risk of failure is only high in situations you can...
  27. sillydriver

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

At fast highway speeds power is needed continuously. In city driving you are constantly speeding up and slowing down. In ICE cars, energy is wasted by friction brakes. Electric cars have regenerative breaking. I think regenerative braking is what produces better city mileage than highway...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

Despite the rant I wrote upthread, in a sense I don't think the plaid+ is canceled. Will they not make 4680 lower cost million-mile tabless batteries in a year or two? Of course they will. Will they not put them in their high-end, high gross margin car once they are making enough of them? Of...

    Plaid+ CANCELLED

So I signed up for plaid (no plus back then) on battery day. Company shifted my order to plus when that car was announced without asking whether I wanted to, where that car then got delayed for the better part of a year, but then I was glad to sit with the order because of the range. Now they...

Call from Tesla asking me to cancel Plaid+ and take a Plaid

Just saw this thread. I also received the same call and refused. Like others upthread I have a P85D that I love but is long in the tooth. My real-world (as opposed to fantasies bout the Nurbergring) justification for the plaid+ is also range. I also don't want to be an early-adopter (guinea...

Do I Virginia emissions stickers for a Tesla?

I live in VA and have a P85D. Even if you live in a county where emissions testing is required, you take the...

    Wiki Model S Delivery Update

I just got a call that I picked up because it said "Freemont, CA." Tesla rep wanted to know whether I wanted to change my order from plaid+ (placed on battery day before anyone knew there was a difference between plaid and plaid+) for a regular plaid that would be delivered within two months...

Model S Plaid vs Plaid +vs Raven

I ordered plaid on battery day. When the actual plaid was introduced months later my order (and I suspect others from battery day) was listed as plaid+. I decided to keep it that way because of the 520 mile range promised for plaid+. If delivery shifts too deep into 22 or beyond 22 there...

So what makes a Plaid + worth $30k more than a Plaid? [Update: Plaid+ canceled]

Agree. I was recently driving my old P85DL on a two lane country road with a 55 speed limit and passed another car faster than I had to out of sheer exuberance. I decided to brake hard afterward - also just for the joy of driving - and I was nearly back down to the limit when the brake pedal...

Mercedes EQS Sedan: Rival to Tesla Model S

Sigh.. I've loved my now six year old P85D and have a deposit on a plaid+ that I put in on battery day, but the EQS is the first car that I can see pulling me away from Tesla. First, I'm about to move from the Virginia countryside (where I can drive fast) back to crowded New England. If I get...
  38. sillydriver

So what makes a Plaid + worth $30k more than a Plaid? [Update: Plaid+ canceled]

I assume it's brakes, some aero (probably a larger rear diffuser) and whatever it takes to sustain performance over the 7 or so minutes needed to lap the Nurburgring, i.e. a better cooling architecture for a 4680 structural pack.

Model S Refresh Spotted in Ohio

It's an LR. The low 3 seconds to 60 for the LR is the same time as for the P85D's original insane mode. They even mention "insane" acceleration when they described the LR on the Tesla website.

    Who ordered S Plaid/Plaid+

I suppose the optimistic view for reservation holders would be that the plaid+ will be introduced much sooner than the mid-22 date that's in effect for new orders, and the $10k price increase just put in coincident with the appearance of the mid-22 date means that the orders on the book already...

Very strange service center experience center with odometer - did I get someone else's eMMC daughter board?

Your experience is consistent with mine when I brought my 2015 P85D into service to replace the failing center screen and MCU a couple years ago. When I picked up the car the odometer had 12k miles less on it than when I brought it in. They obviously replaced mine with a unit salvaged from...

    2021 Refresh Model S Discussion

I like carbon fiber and have it coming on the plaid+. But I ask in all seriousness: is Tesla's CF trim real, or does it have the relationship of typical automakers' wood trim to real wood. I ask because I saw some posts years ago where the CF spoiler on Model S showed wear for some people...

    2021 Refresh Model S Discussion

Here is an example of what I think overall is a very pretty car (although I would rather have the plaid+, which I think will be around the same price). But even though it's more flashy I think the MS, particularly with dark window and T as shown, is just as pretty if not more so than the rear...

    2021 Refresh Model S Discussion

I love the nosecone. It's the thing I will be most sad to leave behind when my plaid+ order is filled (and the yacht floor too, although many people now probably aren't even aware of what that is). I have always disliked the slot with that little bird's beak detail in the nose of the current...

2015 P90DL Fan Behaviour (Please Save my Sanity)

I've noticed my P85D doing the same thing when I leave it charged 80% or more. I wonder whether the fans are put on to cool the battery to avoid thermal runaway, or whether they are put on simply to waste power and run down the battery state of charge until it's brought below the level where...

Model S Plaid+ order updated - now shows 'Yoke Steering'

Here's mine - no indication of yoke. Also no picture. Decided not to go for FSD since I enjoy driving myself - especially in this kind of car. Edit - thinking about it I wonder whether yoke steering correlates with ordering FSD?
