Your recollection is wrong. Even the current version does not 'call home'. I strongly suggest you switch to Linux and Open Office though because no matter how you like it, Microsoft is doing what everybody is doing and making their software most connected. Like Tesla, you could say...;)

The model S is very very hard to wake up via wifi (even on a very strong connection like mine, it is literally parked a few feet from a professional Ubiquiti AP).

Depending on the connection it can take up to 15 minutes. Seems faster the second time you use it the same day but the next day it is slow again. Seems much faster on wifi so it could be this has a low priority over LTE
