2015 P90D (range upgrade)

Hi guys

I have just bought a 2015 P90D from Tesla "CPO". It was made in Nov 15 and on the PDF with options they sent me, it says "range upgrade" On some VIN checkers it is showing as a P85D though.

Im assuming this was originally a P85D and the battery was upgraded to a P90D?

It was made in Nov 2015 and the original owner took delivery in Jan 2016. I have seen the Carfax. Tesla will not show me the Monroney though, they say they are not allowed to as it is a used car. They are telling me the MSRP was $133,500 before delivery fee.

Options listed:

autopilot with convenience
keyless entry
power lift gate
red brake calipers
pearl white
grey next generation seats
21" grey turbine wheels
glass panoramic
piani black decor
matching yacht floor
black headliner

The car was listed with 19,000 miles on Tesla CPO when I bought it but the images show 17,000 miles. The carfax shows it was added to inventory in February this year.

Questions:

- Is this a true P90D? My insurance seems to be quoting me on a P85D (which I won't complain about)
- Any guess as to what Version battery this will have is made in Nov 15 and is listed as "range upgrade". I cannot see the sticker on the inside of the wheel until I take delivery.
- I was not able to produce a Monroney that added up to $133,500 when I bought a Monroney and inserted the options?
- Any idea why 2,000 miles was added after the images they took?

Thanks so much!

Congrats, sounds like a nicely optioned ride. Here's my take, opinon:

1. It is a true P90D, I assume they also added Ludacris? The range upgrade is the price to upgrade to 90 kWh battery, from 85 kWh.
2. No clue, but definitely not a V3, hopefully a V2. But honestly, I wouldn't worry about it, just drive an enjoy it. You have warranty, hopefully that gives you a little piece of mind. It does to me.
3. Don't get caught up in the specifics, just know, you are paying a fraction of what it costed new. There is incredible value in used Tesla's, IMHO.
4. I'm 99.9% certain that Tesla uses their used fleet as service loaners. It's kinda brilliant. They have an asset, they can utilize, and then turn around and sale, and not really lose much value. However, if they were to hand out new Inventory, those would certainly depreciate more once some miles were added. I've tracked some used cars for the past several months while shopping, and I've seen them disappear, and then reappear months later, with some additional mileage, and the price didn't significantly drop.

Again, congrats, like you, I just purchased.....picking up mine tomorrow. Fingers crossed....

Thanks so much for the quick reply!

Yes, it has ludicrous and a 4yr warranty and I was aware of the 90 battery issues but figured who cares if I have a warranty. If the battery gives me problems there is a chance Tesla replace it with a V3 anyway right? Or maybe even a 100 if they dont have a 90? :)

Yes, value seems amazing. Paid 60k for a car that was 133k car new and only has 19k miles. I am so stoked and can't wait.

The only thing I may have added is air suspension but I guess coil is more reliable. I can always add a spoiler too.

Kind of a bummer if it was used as a loaner car for 2,000 miles. Strange they would loan out a ludicrous model.

Wow you are getting yours tomorrow....AWESOME!

Mine is in SF and I am in San Diego. I think I am going to fly there and drive it back to save the $2,000 :)

Point of clarification: Your car is a Tesla used car and not a CPO as they discontinued that program expressly along with any and all reference to refurbishment so continuing to refer to them as a CPO is further confusing potential buyers since that program no longer exists. The warranty and what not still remains mostly unchanged and it can still be a good deal but using the CPO terminology incorrectly implies an additional level of inspection and repair that no longer exists.

Sounds like your car began life as a P85D with a physical 90kwh battery pack and was later upgraded via software to a 90kwh. You may be paying a lower rate on your ins premiums but this could come back to bite you if you ever need to file a claim on a P90D since you've been paying P85D premiums.

The only way to know what battery pack it has is to look underneath the driver's side front wheel well where the label is. Assuming it's the one that was installed at the factory it would be fairly early in the production of 90 battery packs if it was sold as a P85D so my money would be on a v1 pack but that's only a guess. One easy way to confirm for yourself though.

Someone at Tesla can get you the Monroney but it's not an easy task since just talking to someone at Tesla these days is a rare feat let alone getting someone who can actually help you with your issue. This applies to all things Tesla service related unfortunately.

Sounds like it was used as a loaner while it was being sold. This is a fairly common practice from what I've gathered. They'd be wise to update the odometer photos and mileage regularly as they accrue miles to avoid such questions. I don't think it much matters as some here will say that loaner miles are harder than normal miles but I think on an EV miles is miles. Your original owner may have driven it harder than most of the loaner miles. It's splitting hairs either way and not even really worth wasting energy on IMO. Just enjoy your new car man, it's sweet!

It's pretty normal these days to get a 90kWh battery replacement for 85kWh cars. That's what they did to my car. Once the shop got the new battery installed, the car started showing up as a P90D in the Tesla app, and I had an extra 15 miles of range on a full charge. It's not a big deal, enjoy the car.

I really wanted the Smart Air Suspension, because as I'm getting older, I like more comfort. :)

But yes, if I were you, or anyone else, I'd definitely drive it home and save the $2,000. Personally, I love driving and road trips. I imagine it's going to be even more pleasing in the Tesla.

I'm driving mine from Fremont (San Francisco area) back to Houston, almost 2,000 miles. Luckily my wife isn't coming, and neither are the kids! Peace and quiet for 2-3 days. I was thinking of driving extra slow, to make it 4-5 days. :D

Thanks guys!

My car is ready, wooohooo. I am picking it up Saturday morning from Fremont and driving it back to San Diego. I can't wait!

I will check what battery it has when I get it but whatever it is, it is, thats fine. If its a V1, so be it.

I will likely take it in to a Tesla Service center close to me to get the battery checked out. It doesnt sound like Tesla do a very good job anymore of checking it out and servicing it before sale now that its not CPO anymore.

Maybe I get lucky and they put in a v3 or 100kWh battery? :)

Any other tips anyone has for when pick it up or for the drive back to San Diego?

Document EVERYTHING you see that wasn't in the initial pictures. Scratching, missing pieces (UMC, parcel shelf, tow hook). Be polite, but firm, and they'll likely be able to address some of the issues with a due bill for covering the future work.

The 100kwh won’t fit your pre-refresh car so don’t hold out hope there. The 90kwh are actually 87kwh packs (many articles on this) and to discover which pack you have the part number is on the passenger front wheel area. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left and look into passenger front area of the battery pack you will find the label with the part number. Search the part number and you will find a few threads to determine which version pack you have.

Enjoy your new purchase!!

I’ve asked Tesla and they said that all of their CPO (or used it whatever term you want to use) go to a Mannheim lot and Mannheim takes the pictures and provides them. On the pic they have on their website was the mileage from the T where it shows the vin and the mileage? Maybe some pics got mixed up. (And yes it does happen) from what I’ve been told they use their older cars that have “issues” as loaners. Not what Elon promised or said. But hey id rather drive a Tesla than an ICE

Jeez, I hope mine isn't a car with "issues".

I saved a screenshot of the original listing with mileage at 19k or so and I have the pics they sent me where the screen shows the image of the miles at 17k ish.

The other thing that makes this dubious is that if all the pics were taken back in February when the carfax shows they got it and the mileage in the pic is 2,000 less than what they are listing the mileage at - this means all photos could potentially be from February, before it was driven an additional 2,000 miles by who knows who!

Have you asked your used car support specialist? I was able to get a verbal of every single things Tesla ever did as far as maintenance. Makes you kinda wonder if someone else bought it as CPO then raven with free supercharging came out and they traded it. I’ll be honest. I love love love my P85D. But I was tempted to trade it for a long range raven. The reason I wonder is that my car was a lease return in February and still car fax shows Tesla as owning the car. So there must be some slight delay. We picked up our car end of May and got registration mid June.

No I didn't ask. I guess I can. I mean at this point I'm getting the car anyway. It has 19,000 miles only and 4yr warranty. I'll never know who drove it and how hard anyway. I specifically chose a low mileage one so it wouldn't be too much concern.

If there are cosmetic issues that were not shown in the pics when I get it, I'll document those and point out the discrepancy in mileage in the photos vs tesla listing. That should buy me some leverage so I'll probably say nothing and hope for the best when I take delivery on Saturday! :)

FWIW, my P90DL was manufactured October 2015 and the Monroney listed a $3000 "Range Upgrade" option as well.

Congrats on the new Tesla!
You're going to love it!

I agree that you need to point out anything that isn't right at delivery and get them to put in writing that they will fix whatever they agree to fixing.
My car was in fantastic condition with the only problem I found bring the frunk liner didn't seem to fit well.
My local service center agreed to replace it under warranty, so it didn't matter that I didn't get it in writing. But better safe than sorry?
