2170 battery cell production has begun!!

Earlier this week Tesla announced the current production run will supply the Powerwalls, which are also built in Nevada. They also indicated cell production will begin for the Model 3 later this year.
This was their intent all along if I remember correctly. And it makes sense, it's a standalone product that could be promoted or stocked as necessary. Less updates needed than than the car stuff, making life cycle longer?
The 20MWh order from the state of California could keep them busy the next few days.

From the article I posted:

Model 3 cell production will follow in Q2

Yes...."later this year" and "in Q2" are both currently technically correct.

However, if cell production begins in Q2, it likely won't be the bottleneck in the Model 3 production ramp.

Right now Tesla is holding the kWh cost to consumers as high as it's been, probaby since 2012?
To convince them to sell you a 125kWh 2170 pack, even if their cost is around $25k or less, will not be easy even at 50k.
Actually it would be awesome if they'd offer existing owners the first chance to upgrade, while kickstarting their cell recycling plant. So you get some value back for your old pack. Especially the 90-100 ones which can be sold to 60-75 owners.
So cool if early S/X buyers were rewarded for their loyal by the offer to buy a 125kWh at cost +30%. But it won't happen. They'll much rather sell P125DL cars around it for $200k each, at huge (100%?) markup.
