Account/Ownership Transfers

Has anyone successfully completed an account or ownership transfer? I reserved the Model 3 through my father's account since he is a Model S owner (which put me a little higher in line for delivery). I finally took delivery of my Model 3 on February 16th and made the request for the account transfer that day. I was told it would take a few days to complete. Then, I received an email saying that there was a delay in the processing and it should take a bit longer than expected. Here I am 5 weeks later I haven't heard anything. I called in today to see what's going on and it sounded like my transfer had fallen through the cracks and I was not notified in any way or told that more information was needed from me to complete. I was then given a list of some additional information and photos that needed to be sent in to get the process rolling again.

Has anyone else been experiencing this issue or had trouble getting their vehicle account moved? I completely understand that there have been delays and issues, but I'm surprised it's been taking this long!

I will be in this boat Saturday when I pick up my Model 3 because I ordered through a different account.

I am hoping they figure out the issue fast. I did read something on a Facebook group that the pause is due to some "privacy concern" when moving the VIN. I think a bigger privacy concern is that before the VIN is moved the original person who ordered the car can see your car, unlock it/do whatever they want to it via the app.

Who knows what the reason is, but it seems odd that there is a delay especially considering Tesla has to move VIN to different accounts whenever a used Tesla is sold.

I asked my ISA about this and she said that she has heard it has been taking a bit longer than normal but that my delivery specialist would be the one to help me.

Are you all getting access to the app without having the VIN in your account? I have read that it sounds like at delivery they can get the app working for you even with the VIN still in the other person's account. I hope this is the case. I have been exchanging PMs with someone who is in a really bad spot because they can't supercharge without having the VIN in their account.

What sort of info/photos did they ask for?

Ok, so I have had full functionality with the app since delivery because I had been using my dad's account (with his login info). Then, a few weeks back they granted me access to the Model 3 through my own account which now allows me to access the car through my own sign-in, but my VIN still shows on my dad's account when he accesses his Model S. So, for all intents and purposes, I have access to the car through my own account and through the app, but my Model 3 is not actually showing up in my account as my car. Also, my dad gets all kinds of notifications regarding me and my car (which can be really annoying).

Nurkbonis: just a head's up...they told me that they would be able to do the account transfer when I took delivery of the car, and that my delivery specialist would be the one handling it, but that was not the case. You have to email or call a specific help department that deals with this and there has been an abnormally long delay to have them do this transfer. Keep in mind, mine's been pending for over a month! They will not explain what the hold-up is...just that there is a large backlog and that they are working on it. Like you said, this should be something that can be done in a matter of hours, as it's necessary whenever a car is sold to a different owner.

Also, to answer your question about supercharging: I have been able to supercharge the car, but I believe the cost is being billed to my dad's account since the car doesn't belong to my account yet.

The info they asked for is simple: home address, phone number, photo of license and registration

I am in the same boat. I reserved under my bro in laws account. The owner has to contact tesla (who the reservation was placed under) and send them the info they request. Then they said a few weeks later it should switch accounts (or so I was told).

Thanks for the input. This info came from my ISA when she confirmed my delivery day/time:

App Access:

1. The primary key for your new Model 3 is your phone!
2. If your vehicle was ordered through another individuals Tesla account or additional access is needed (such as for a spouse) – please make your request to your delivery experience specialist the day of delivery. Any post-delivery app access requests will need to be made to our customer support team at [email protected] or 1 (877) 798-3752.
3. Any individuals needing app access must create a Tesla account before the request can be processed. Accounts can be created here.

Despite what it says about talking to the delivery specialist at delivery, I already sent an email to the address above asking for the VIN to be moved. I'm sure it won't do anything because I don't even have the car yet, but I'm hoping it helps get the ball moving.

Real head scratcher if you ask me.

Thanks, I will wait for delivery to happen and then will have the original reservation holder shoot an email to Tesla with me CCd. BTW, how was the pick-up experience in Portland? I get mine Saturday.

Definite head scratcher! I was initially told that they would take care of the transfer at delivery, then at delivery they told me I needed to have the original account email servicehelpNA and they would take care of it. Many emails, many calls later and 5 weeks...still no apparent progress.

Congrats on your delivery Saturday! This is my first Tesla and the delivery experience in Dania Beach, FL exceeded my expectations. The car has exceeded my expectations even further!

***Update to my original post***
I initiated the request to have the account ownership transferred to my wife yesterday via my Tesla account (click Manage, and then submit a question/concern; or whatever it says in there). I provided her full name, email and phone number. I just noticed that it's no longer under my account anymore and it has updated under her account.

Seems like updating at delivery isn't as quick or efficient as the current owner initiating the request from the actual Tesla account.

I've just submitted the request through the "Manage" tab as you suggested, so let's see how long it takes to process from this point!

Thanks for the advice!

Keep us posted. I hope it works. I am ok with using the keycard and no supercharger access for a few weeks if needed because I have a wall charger at home and can charge at work, but obviously good to get the VIN moved to my account ASAP.

Picked up my Model 3 Friday. Here is what my delivery specialst emailed me about getting the VIN moved:

"To transfer an account for Model 3 first you will create your own MyTesla account. Then you email [email protected] with the VIN number and the usernames of the account that the car is currently under and the account you want to transfer it to. They will reply with a few verification steps and the whole transfer process takes 5-7 business days."

No VIN movement yet. Will update when there's something to update.

I feel like I've posted this at least a dozen times, but one more time won't hurt :).

You can transfer ownership after delivery has occurred.

1.The current owner should email [email protected], subject line: Ownership transfer. Mail from the same email account you use for your Tesla account.

2.Supply the VIN you want to transfer, the Tesla account address of the new owner, and legal documentation (such as a Bill of Sale or title) showing the new owner. (Registration won't work.)

3. Wait. It usually doesn't take long, but it's how to get it done. The good news is that other phones can be set up as a key, so it's mostly inconvenient to the original owner before transfer.
If some of you are trying to do this because you bought someone's reservation, no judgment here, but hopefully the seller told you it wasn't immediate. Personally, I think the seller should be willing to allow you access to their account while you wait - but unless you're friends or family, they probably won't want to hand over their password.

Update: And yes, I've successfully done this for my sister. Also note that it won't work to do it from your Tesla account as some have suggested.

Just an update, I have requested the account transfer correctly, as outlined above, but it has now been over a month and a half since I took delivery of the car, and still no progress. This request is being done within the same family (it's not like I purchased the reservation or anything like that)...it's my dad's account!! I have been told just about everything at this point, delays yada yada, but it's over a month and a half and it should be something relatively easy to complete! Now, I'm really enjoying the car, love Tesla and love most of the service I have been provided by just about everyone. I'm just so surprised that this is taking so long and that I really haven't been given an honest estimate or expectation by anyone involved in this account transfer!

Another update, I called in today to check on the status and was told that NO account transfers/updates are being done on Model 3s. There has been some kind of "hold" on doing any transfers, so it looks like this isn't going to get resolved any time soon. Has anyone else called in and received the same story?

Hopefully they sort this out sooner than later. I haven't called yet because I only submitted the email, per my delivery specialist's instruction, on Friday. I mentioned it above, but I read something on a Facebook group about a privacy concern with moving the VINs causing the delay/pause. Who knows what the reason is, but I'm sure they are working to solve it ASAP EST (Elon Standard Time.)

This isn't true at all, my neighbor just had his transferred 2 days ago. You (or the current person under the account) need to send the request through your My Tesla account. Give the name, email, and phone number for the new owner.
