...but this wasn't bail out money. Ford and Nissan got much larger loans than Tesla. Are they "losers" too?
No. They aren't lumped in because they aren't considered "green" like Tesla and Fisker is in their minds.

Republicans are finding a way to alienate almost everyone, as they age and die off, it's likely there will be no more republicans.

Guys. Stop. Please.
You know it isn't going anywhere. No one is going to change their opinion. Just. Not. Worth. Spending. Your. Time. On. Her.
Really. Be above it.
.... please learn that we residents do NOT receive a gift - although I do understand it can seem so to non-Alaskans; the PF dividend is NOT something that ever is going to influence an Alaskan politician either to back or decry anything like EVs; and as far as "money for nothing": someone who thinks thusly might change your mind if you looked at, for example my postings on the "Alternative Energy Powered...". My having to pay electric utility rates IN EXCESS of you - whoever you are - writing out that check you pay monthly to your utility company every single day (i.e., $4.25/kWh)*, should give you such willies as to change your mind regarding our paltry PF dividend.
*Residents in the rest of the state do not pay this usurious rate. That privilege is reserved for those of us stupid enough to live Way Out Here....
The secret that is not talked about with the ATVM loan program was that it was created to allow Ford to avoid going into bankruptcy like GM. That's why they got the bulk of the loans, $5.9 billion. The Bush administration still had to sell it to both sides of the fence so it was an Advanced Technology loan program. That high tech angle allowed Tesla and Fisker to join in. It was not easy either, because you had to match whatever funds you got which is what killed a lot of the little fish, like Aptera and others.
Fundamentally the program was there to save Ford from following GM and it succeeded. The whole program is 97.5% successful with Tesla being the shining star of the bunch.
I have often pondered the huge amount Ford got and where they have invested all of that. I know they have alot of EV cars in the pipeline and their new line of ECO boost coming out on so many models ... but 6 billion is a lot of money

Wikipedia said:Given 60 days by congressional statute to issue an interim final rule, the Department of Energy (DOE), responsible for overseeing the program, finalized the rule 36 days later on November 5, 2008 (compared to 18 months usually needed for such rule making). The loan program was authorized under section 136 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which provided the program with $25 billion in loan authority, supported by a $7.5 billion appropriation to fund the credit subsidy, or the 30% risk profile expected for projects of this type.
