Do you know what BMW stands for? Break My Wallet! God help the people who own an i8 out of warranty. I strongly recommend you do your due diligence on BMW's reliability before spending the cash. It won't take long before you are upside down if something big breaks out of warranty on that turd -- yes I have owned a few BMW's in the past and will never own another one again. Their cars are complete garbage.

BMW is bad, but Mini Cooper (also made by BMW) is worst. I owned both. We have a mechanic friend who specialists in luxury cars. We told him our problems with BMW and Mini... he just smiled and said, "Yeah I know.. BMW and Mini owners are our BEST customers!" So we asked whom are your WORST customers? He said, "Lexus". So I traded in my Mini for a Lexus. It was at 180,000 miles before I got the Tesla. The Lexus has 0 repair done and still running smooth as silk... my mom is driving it. And Lexus service is amazing. If Lexus ever came out with an EV... it will probably be my next car. BMW and Mini? I advice leasing... I was told that everything were made to break after about 50,000 miles. But they were amazing to drive.... not as amazing as the Tesla though.

The i8 is a very beautiful car both inside and out and I am sure it drives really well.

However there are usually good reasons why an originally expensive car heavily depreciates. This is not always the case for exotic looking sports cars; some actually maintain value really well (some even gain value). Usually the ones that heavily depreciate have known reliability problems.

The i8 is BMW's first "performance hybrid" attempt and is bound to have many maintenance issues. Basically the car is relatively cheap (compared to its looks and original price) because you ll likely need to spend a great deal of money to maintain and repair the car. Also insurance cost is likely really high (it has very expensive body structure).

Moreover exotic looking sports cars depreciate VERY HEAVILY when driven with normal miles. Although the car is already heavily depreciated, if you actually drive it with normal miles, the car will be essentially worthless in just a few years, with all the accompanying costs of keeping it running for all those miles.

Let's see... small engine augmented by wimpy electric system. To make it sound cool, BMW pumps fake engine sounds into the passenger compartment. At $50K there are a number of nice used cars I might rationalize but the i8 isn't one of them. Well, it does look cool and the doors are nicely funky. Somehow it reminds me of those cool looking cars from the 1960's made by putting a cool looking fiberglass body over a VW Beetle chassis.

How do you know how amazing Lexus service is if you've had no repairs? Are you saying they nailed the scheduled services?

Not sure if OP is trolling or so out of touch that this is a serious question.

If you want an i8 then go buy one too. It’s a sexy car but is not even remotely designed to be as practical as a sedan. You might as well throw the F-150 in the comparison since you’re talking about machines designed for wildly different purposes.

I am curious about the BMW i8, because I am seeing a ton of used ones on Craigslist for a very reasonable price of like $60-80k. Well, my parents bought my Model 3 and just bought it cash like no big deal. But they never considered buying used, even slightly used, to get the best deal possible. I'm not complaining, I like the Model 3, but it just irks me there is a BMW i8 for the same price as my Model 3. And I am sure this BMW i8 will get more head turns than any Model 3, since they're like everywhere now. And this BMW i8 def has that dream car exotic look, and you can probably go around telling everyone you're some millionaire hot shot with a popular YouTube channel.

Easy. Get your parents to buy you an i8.

What is the point of this post? You're irked? Geez! Entitled much?

Agreed! We bought our first Lexus about 4 years ago (GS350) and it has needed nothing but consumables (gas, oil, brakes, tires, etc). At my local Porsche dealer (drive a Cayenne) we had a service adviser move over from a Lexus dealer because he "wasn't making enough" (commission job). Considering my Cayenne hasn't even hit 85k miles yet, and has had close to $15k in repairs tells me he will do just fine in his new position. LOL! Honestly, I don't know how consumer reports can rate Porsche under Lexus in reliability.

My wife was actually going to buy the Cayenne after owning two BMW X5's in the last 10 years. But before we got to test drive the Cayenne, we test drove the Model X. It was so amazing that we ordered one right after test drive. Now a year later, I also switched from my Lexus to a Tesla. I don't think I could go back to drive an ICE car.

@JetFalcon - the i8 was made for you, and you were made for the i8.

Trade your Model 3 immediately, I bet you can swap it with an i8 owner.

Your Model 3 experience is going to get worse my friend. Even your 60K Model 3 is going to look no different than the 35K Model 3.

It gets worse and worse. You can't even tell the lowest end Model 3 buyer because they all have glass roofs and premium interiors.

Think about all those broke asses that not only have a 35K Model 3 but they might even have financed them.

You are way too good for those Model 3 plebeians. I'm your boy - I'll check your haters STAT.

Two reasons I would not buy:

Exhaust vents into rear compartment. Storage space is in that compartment.

No Summon. You park in a wide open spot, cars park too close on both sides, and you can’t get in because of the wing doors.

You trying to turn heads or buy water from Costco?

Who cares about summon. This is what valet is for. You don't have a dollar to tip?

I don’t know why I clicked this thread, but after doing so I’m going to go back to bed. Hopefully the world ends while I’m asleep so I never have to read anything this dumb again.

I'm warning @JetFalcon against people like you. Jealous haters. You can't appreciate class.

Wish my parents bought me a car to complain about.

Not @JetFalcon 's problem. If your parents were more successful, they wouldn't have to deal with whining from you.

Not sure if this was a serious post or made to get laughs, definitely made me laugh. Comes off as a spoiled snobby OC kid whose still in high school. Parents bought you a safe yet we'll driving and technologically advanced car, you have no business to complain. Wanting to appear like a "baller" and showing off your possessions and acting like your a self made millionaire when in fact you didn't do anything and your parents are the ones who actually did it all is a good start to get hated on! Good your parents didn't buy you a 2 door i8 death trap, they might actually not want to see you get hurt. The i8 looks cool but that's it, it's slow, uncomfortable, has poor reliability, it's not pure electric. Focus on school and get yourself what you want in the future and be proud you earned it yourself but till then enjoy the gift your parents gave you.

Laugh at what? What you call spoiled, is parents providing.

Sorry you weren't provided for, and you can't provide yourself.

i8 is plenty safe. AND it turn heads.

Of course the kid can complain. His parents will buy the right thing in the future. How else will they know unless he asserts his desires?

For every hater like yourself, there are admirers. Who cares what you think since you aren't viewing his Youtube and Instagram anyway?
