View attachment 273141 I have the same cloth headliner on my Infiniti, change it to "Infiniti" headliner.
It also looks similar to the headliner Audi uses in the A3.

And it also looks like the headliner on this company's webpage.

Did it cause you to doubt their competence when the synthetic suede was removed from the top of the dash without notice, or when the premium lighting was dropped from standard without notice? I wonder what is different about this particular running change versus any other.

Some people (probably not you) may be upset just because it is a change at all, for instance.
I'm not familiar with that episode, so can't say whether it was handled competently or not. What's different this time is that Model 3 production is SUPPOSED to be different! This is Tesla's entry into the mass market. This is where they show us they can build 20,000 to 40,000 cars every month! Steady high volume, high quality, and consistency. Even better than Toyota, because Tesla employs the most efficient imaginable volumetric alien dreadnoughts.

Model 3 production was supposed to be different. But it's not. Will they go from bush league mistakes like this one, to topnotch production of thousands per week by March? We'll see. But I'm not holding my breath.

I absolutely do try to assume best intentions until I get data that tells me otherwise. But let’s keep political figures out of the discussion.

Until you get data that tells you otherwise. That's the key, and it makes you just the same as all the rest of us. We all bring our own biases and standards to the question of when someone deserves or has forfeited the benefit of the doubt.

IOW, we all assume good intentions from those we believe to have good intentions.

So that Stanford showroom has a "headliner choice" display on the wall, but I guess it is meant for Model S & X only?

They show 2 different material choices in black.
Oh I so wish I could get one of the black materials on my Model 3.
I would be glad to forgo the ultra-suede/escaine/alcantara if only they let me order something in black instead of light gray.

Here's hoping that the wish fairy magically transforms my order at the factory with some black headliner material...
(Yeah, I know some of the gray plastic bits would look a little contrasty, but would still prefer it that way. )

Yep. For some believing in good intentions = believing in good intentions from Tesla.

Others believe in good intentions from parties other than that.

Nope. Those are no longer available on Model S/X either. There is only the base cloth at this time.

Tesla drops Alcantara headliners from Model S/X?

One of those black headliner choices was a cloth not the ultra-suede stuff.

Well, of course. I did not mean to suggest the base headliner is no longer available. The whole point here is, of course, that Tesla replaced their premium headliner with base headliner on all cars without pre-notification or compensation - instead tried to spin it into a some kind of an upgrade story...

It’s a shame they didn’t anticipate loosing the supplier or have a better backup plan. Essentially the plan seems to be according to the Tesla release....they planed this degrade all along, just thought we would suprise buyers with a degrade. oh wait maybe it’s another Easter egg

The biggest shame is, though, they are trying to avoid being up front about it - even to the extent of avoiding another press release....
Tesla was trying to avoid another press release on the topic,

Why not just try honesty as the best policy...

Have you guys checked out the new poll options on Electrek?

How much more biased can you get?

The headliner is arguably one of the least important parts of the vehicle that received arguably a minor update and it still created an uproar. Talk about first world problems.

...

- I prefer the old fake suede material
- I prefer the new textile material
- I couldn't care less

Way to speak up and set up an impartial poll!

If I remember correctly, Elon stated in a quarterly update call a while back that Tesla will have the ability to insource production for any part if a supplier falls behind or can't deliver (at least for the Model 3 program).

If the rumors are true and this whole situation stems from a fallout with a supplier, I would think Tesla could insource production of headliners for the 3 if they wanted to (though they probably figured it was easier and less costly to just go with the cloth material).

Anyways, I'm thinking this was a bad communication error on their part and in light of the blowback they've received, they may consider knocking down the price of the PUP, make it up somehow to the 3 owners who got cloth unexpectdly, or announce their intention to bring back fake suade at some point (or do all 3).

Saw my first in the flesh Model 3 today at one of the local Tesla stores slash delivery centers.

It was VIN 30xx and had the new headliner. The car was blue.

The headliner is not a deal killer. It is about the same as what I see on entry level premium cars, but I could live with it. The use of alcantara on the sun visors and the black alcantara on the door inserts still looks weird to me... but I could not write off the car over that.

Other observations....

I thought I would love the blue color but I'm left just sort of meh on it. I think I might wind up with the dark silver color instead at this point even though I've had multiple cars that color over the past 20 years. White is also an option, but my current ride is white.

This car was fairly well put together but had some noticeably poor panel gaps and alignment issues... I didn't even point them out, the brand specialist who came out to make sure I wasn't mugging a customer's car noticed them and mentioned "this is why waiting a year is not such a bad thing". Paint also had a fair amount of orange peel. He said at least now the "blue is right"... he indicated some of the earlier production had blue paint from another supplier and it had a lot more metal flake in it than what Tesla uses on their other cars... to the point that when parked next to each other the different shade was noticeable.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty sharp looking ride. I have a few pics but I won't post them because the car was filthy (and blue shows that dirt pretty glaringly)... it was also a little smaller in person than I was dreading... it's only a smidge bigger than my BMW 3 series and looks pretty svelte.

Thanks for the perspective

Would you accept your car and give Tesla final payment based panel on the gaps and alignment issues you saw?
