China Market situation and outlook

So Model S prices may come down by 20+%? Wow.

One problem might be that people will hold off on ordering now as they wait for the tariff to end?

That is certainly possible but two things to consider: The model S is one of the 'it' cars in China.....probably won't drastically affect short term demand, And, we are still supply constrained for the foreseeable future.

"The losing party in W.T.O. cases almost always appeals the decision, and sometimes both sides do so, with the winner seeking a clearer endorsement of its position. China has a consistent track record of appealing when it loses on the panel report."

Everybody appeals and everybody loses the appeal.

That is why there is almost always a negotiated settlement that strongly favors the winner of the original decision.

They talk about scraping polluting vehicles and limiting new license plates to try to bring down the total number of cars. It will help TM and other EV makers for sure but how much if they will be limiting license plate issuances to the extreme? Not trying to be negative, just wondering if China means to limit cars and go more for mass transportation.

While public transportation is always possible, elsewhere on TMC someone explained that the license plates are transferable and used by their owners on more than one car. So the polluting cars may get destroyed, but not the plate. The more old cars taken off the road, the more opportunities to sell a Tesla.

"Pollution has emerged as an urgent priority for China's leaders as they try to reverse the damage done by decades of breakneck growth and head off public anger about the sorry state of the nation's air, water and soil."

I was curious for a while about the million dollar question - what elites can do (drive) in the face of public anger over the problem of pollution. Does not seem that keeping driving Mercedes S class vehicles, while selling an idea of switching to electric cars for the masses that can afford a car (BYD?) can be a sustainable proposition for the elites. I also do not think that their way out of this situation lies in lining up and buying locally produced EVs that sacrifice performance, status (and perhaps safety and utility) to the altar of being an EV, the green individual transportation.

So what will allow elites to enthusiastically join the green transportation revolution that is being sold to the masses, while not sacrificing the performance, status, comfort, safety and utility?? Enter Tesla MS/MX. I think this is the reason we could expect Tesla vehicles enjoying special privileges in China. The exemption from the license plate auction rules is just the beginning...

Will post more when I return, but have listened first-hand to the disdain for BYD and watched the conversion to enthusiasm for Tesla - brand EV. Pollution here is thick & everyone wants something done. Electric and Tesla will be huge.

China Will Scrap 5 Million Cars to Ease Pollution

In a report outlining a plan to cut growing emissions over the next two years, published on Monday, the government said 5.3 million vehicles(registered before 2005) that don’t meet Chinese fuel standards would be removed from the road, including 330,000 in the smog-plagued capital, Beijing.

Beijing is hoping electric 'new energy ' vehicles will help battle chronic pollution across China and encourage Chinese automakers to exert greater efforts in developing green car technology.

>>>> Although this is not directly linked to Tesla. But here is what I interpret:
1) In near term, Chinese government might give more favorable treatments to Tesla to grow the EV market;
2) In middle to long term, Tesla can benefit more from this largest potential EV market once production is localized, the Chinese government is very serious to promote EV

Quoted from Li Xiang's Weibo (WB), who's the President/Director of autohome (ATHM), and also he's one of the first batch Tesla owners in Beijing who got car delivered from Elon Musk on 04/23.

"Tesla sales in Beijing area is far exceeding expectation, both YiZhuang and Jingang delivery centers are very busy everyday. The elites from technology, media and telecom industries have strong purchase power"

I believe similar story will be reported in Shanghai and other major cities later on.

This is great! Anyone have any ideas on how many cars Tesla delivered in China as of right now?
50? 500?

Curiosity question and off topic some: There was a Chinese man who held the naming right 'tesla' several months ago. It appeared that Tesla was going to have to sell their cars in China under another name. Suddenly and with no explanation Tesla had the right to use their name. A settlement had obviously been reached with this individual. Any word on what the details on this solution in the Chinese media?

There was no settlement. The guy was offered a reasonable amount of money, refused it, and then was taken to court and lost the case. This, if I remember correctly, was revealed by Veronica Wu in one of the interviews.

From what I remember, there was a court case and he lost. He should have taken the money that Tesla was originally willing to pay him, but he tried to extort more out of them and ended up with nothing.
