I don't understand what is all about.

Do ICE cars post warnings when drivers press the gas pedal for a long time?

Poorly written article, probably based on a poor translation. They are requiring an alert when people stomp on the accelerator pedal real hard, because sometimes when people do that they've mistaken the accelerator for the brake pedal. The "recall" also requires an option to turn off regen braking.

This is NOT about a TRUE safety recall. It is about offering the feature of Low Regeneration Braking. This is adding the Low Reg feature to all Tesla cars worldwide including the US and China. China has a law that requires anything changed that affects a car's safety to be a named a recall. News outlets are either just lazy or more likely looking for any clickbait stories and Tesla stories bring in the clicks.

I did a spit take when I read this. 😂

The alert will let them know they are stomping on the accelerator, like the massive g-forces and car launching forward aren't enough of a clue?!?

Well, clearly not. Folks who swap pedals are just confused about why the car is accelerating uncontrollably when they know they're holding the brake down as hard as possible. Why won't it stop? The car is broken!

A message on the screen or a tone isn't going to do anything. The car is going to have to scream at the driver that they're holding the accelerator down full force. Any alarm sound is useless because people aren't going to be trained on the meaning of that tone. For all the driver knows, it's further indication that the car is malfunctioning and that they should press harder on what they believe is a brake pedal.

My gut says that brake and gas pedals should feel different when they are pressed. For example, have the brake pedal vibrate when pressed. Or a click release when first pressed. Just something that builds a slightly different muscle memory so the driver knows something is wrong when they press the wrong pedal.

This whole “not a real recall” trope comes up every time there’s a software recall.

No it’s not a physical recall that requires you to bring the vehicle back, but labeling it a recall does a few things (at least in the US).

It requires a notification letter to be physically sent to all registered owners detailing what exactly the problem is and what they need to do to fix it (in this case just wait for an OTA update).

Typically the media is also notified to help spread awareness of the problem in case there are owners who may not receive the notification letter for whatever reason.

It also allows (requires?) Tesla to push the update over cellular after a certain period of time for people that have not voluntarily updated the car over wifi.

I have heard of updates coming over cellular, but I have not read about updates being forced to install on a car. There has been debate about the efficacy of forcing updates to the car - which disables the car for 20-40 minutes and consumes battery. Would it cause more problems if people couldn't drive their car when they needed it, or expected a certain amount of charge, and found it reduced unexpectedly?

I agree with your points on why a recall is important, and notices must go out to owners, encouraging them to update their software.

Yeah, but in this case it's not a safety defect/ regulatory nonconformance, it's a feature addition/ modification at China's request.

Very much on the OTA update end of the spectrum versus a recall addressed via OTA.
