Just 10% of fossil fuel subsidy cash 'could pay for green transition'

Just 10% of fossil fuel subsidy cash 'could pay for green transition'

Switching just some of the huge subsidies supporting fossil fuels to renewables would unleash a runaway clean energy revolution, according to a new report, significantly cutting the carbon emissions that are driving the climate crisis.

Coal, oil and gas get more than $370bn (£305bn) a year in support, compared with $100bn for renewables, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) report found. Just 10-30% of the fossil fuel subsidies would pay for a global transition to clean energy, the IISD said.
Why we would subsidize our demise always makes me cringe, we know it is the old men that have money made from fossil fuels that keep it going. Not to mention the idiot in charge.

This has been fun. A paper that has been getting a lot of traction in the climate science rejection community is this Zharkova paper:

Oscillations of the baseline of solar magnetic field and solar irradiance on a millennial timescale. - PubMed - NCBI

Her conclusions are that the sun is causing warming because of oscillations in the earth-sun distance. However, she has made some clear errors in the paper, and they've been pointed out repeatedly in the peer forum here:

PubPeer - Oscillations of the baseline of solar magnetic field and sol...

The conversation is dying down because she bailed on it, but her responses are very revealing. It's a good read - Scientific Reports is doing an investigation into the publication, and my guess is it's going to be retracted. Will Tony Heller et al seize on the retraction the way they do any other climate paper? Doubtful. Some in those communities are calling for a Nobel Prize for her work. heh.

Fascinating. Thanks for making me waste a couple of hours!

I love this too !!!
so I only have to listen to your denialist garbage for 12 more years ??
Thats a relief!
Yes - if you leftist morons are stupid enough to believe anything your intellectual leader AOC says then we will all be dead in 12 years – yay! - you geniuses will have been proven correct about catastrophic global warming!! Hopefully that will make all of you socialist nutcases happy. :)

Poor alarmists. More of their lies exposed. This time about the imaginary massive British heat wave:

https://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2019/08/01/english-summer-failing-to-meet-alarmist-expectations-again/

After all of the fuss about a couple of days of sunshine in Britain, reality brings us back down to earth with the monthly CET figures:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcet/cetml1659on.dat

Average mean temperatures for July ended up at 17.5C, meaning that last month was an unremarkable 45th warmest since 1660, tying with years like 1847, 1870 and 1923. It was also 1.3C cooler than July 1783.

This is known as CLIMATE CHANGE.

Taking both June and July together, this year’s ranking drops even further, to 82nd, in a tie with 1706 and 1878.

I'm not sure about Canada but in the USA the 'die-hard conservative' political parties are AGW denialists. Anybody who votes for them is buying denial and stupidity.

I am not a welfare liberal and I find little to like in the Democratic party platform other than they are not AGW morons dancing to the tune of the fossil industry.

Just another reminder of the blatant scientific fraud ignored by alarmists. The "hockey stick" is the poster child for climate fraud, along with all of the bogus "adjustments" to the climate record:

Hockey Stick Groundhog Day

"Fifteen to twenty years ago, Michael Mann and colleagues wrote a few papers claiming that current warming was unprecedented over the last 600 to 2000 years. Other climate scientists described Mann’s work variously as crap, pathetic, sloppy, and crap. These papers caught the interest of Stephen McIntyre and this led to the creation of his Climate Audit blog and the publication of papers pointing out the flaws in these hockey stick reconstructions. In particular, Mcintyre and his co-author Ross McKitrick showed that the method used by Mann and colleagues shifted the data in such a way that any data sets that showed an upward trend in the 20th century would receive a stronger weighting in the final reconstruction. With this method, generation of a hockey-stick shape in the temperature reconstruction was virtually guaranteed, which M&M demonstrated by feeding in random numbers to the method."

Just goes to show that if you want a "hockey stick" bad enough there are ways to do it with sloppy statistical techniques - not that any of you science-denying zealots here in the anti-science echo chamber care.;)

"Overall, 86% of Americans say they have at least “a fair amount” of confidence in scientists to act in the public interest. This includes 35% who have “a great deal” of confidence, up from 21% in 2016.

But a partisan divide persists. More Democrats (43%) than Republicans (27%) have “a great deal” of confidence in scientists – a difference of 16 percentage points. The gap between the two parties on this issue (including independents who identify with each party, respectively) was 11 percentage points in 2016 and has remained at least that large since."

A quick glance will show all temps over 19º have happened recently, and that no July has dipped below 14º for a long time. If you load it up into a spreadsheet, you can see a trend line starting around 15.7º and ending around 16.3º. Seems things are warming up. One slightly cooler month doesn't break a 360 year trend!

And it came at an "unremarkable" 45th eh? Out of 360! Leaves 2019 in the hottest eighth, top 12.5% of all years.

Looks like Exxonmobile has a pretty good climate model!
They predicted back in 1982 that in 2019 our atmospheric CO2 level would reach about 415 parts per million, raising the global temperature roughly 0.9 degrees C.

I am sure their model has no correlation between CO2 and temperature, though since that would be unscientific and certainly incorrect according to @jrad6515 so it couldn't possibly work so accurately based on bad correlation... ;)

The last denier cited is hard to find out anything about.

started blogging as early August 2011 but has since reached global interest with two features in arch denialist Christopher Booker’s Telegraph column in February 2014.

Climategate, the sequel: How we are STILL being tricked with flawed data on global warming
Something very odd has been going on with the temperature data relied on by the world’s scientists, writes Christopher Booker

The fiddling with temperature data is the biggest science scandal ever
New data shows that the “vanishing” of polar ice is not the result of runaway global warming

No bio is supplied but judging from his blog he is British and has some training in statistics although not the vigorous kind where bias and cherry picking is avoided. James Delingpole however is able to flesh out Paul mentioning he is a retired accountant.

So, a retired accountant is more credible than environmental scientists?

Typical alarmist tactic: attack the messenger when you can't attack the message - because it is TRUE, you know it, and you can't refute any of it.

By the way your alarmist heroes no doubt include:

  • Gavin Schmidt (NASA GISS) - mathematician
  • Michael Mann (author of fraudulent hockey stick temp reconstruction) - physicist
  • Phil Jones (HadCrut) - hydrologist
  • Kevin Trenberth (NCAR) - weatherman
  • John Cook (author of fraudulent AGW 'consensus' papers) - cartoonist
  • Greta Thunberg - autistic Swedish schoolgirl

See any "environmental scientists" on your AGW 'experts' list? Thought not. ;)

If you could read a graph properly then you might have been capable of noticing that the warming from 1695 to 1733 was more steep and less 'stable' than it is now, but I guess not. Did we have SUV's and other anthropogenic CO2 emitters back then to cause that unstable, catastrophic warming? No? Thought not. ;)

Greenland’s massive ice sheet is experiencing one of its biggest melting events on record, losing some 11 billion tons of ice in a 24-hour period after Earth’s hottest June and July in recorded history.

According to NASA, Greenland’s glaciers are undergoing a “major melting event,” with billions of tons of meltwater draining into the Atlantic Ocean — enough to cover the entire state of Florida with nearly five inches of water. Over half of the Greenland ice sheet has softened as a direct result of this heat, which has caused an immediate rise in sea water.

“July has re-written climate history, with dozens of new temperature records at local, national and global level,” said World Meteorological Organization Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

We must transform food production to save the world, says leaked report

We must transform food production to save the world, says leaked report

Attempts to solve the climate crisis by cutting carbon emissions from only cars, factories and power plants are doomed to failure, scientists will warn this week.

A leaked draft of a report on climate change and land use, which is now being debated in Geneva by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), states that it will be impossible to keep global temperatures at safe levels unless there is also a transformation in the way the world produces food and manages land.

The new IPCC report emphasises that land will have to be managed more sustainably so that it releases much less carbon than at present. Peat lands will need to be restored by halting drainage schemes; meat consumption will have to be cut to reduce methane production; while food waste will have to be reduced.

Among the measures put forward by the report is the proposal of a major shift towards vegetarian and vegan diets. “The consumption of healthy and sustainable diets, such as those based on coarse grains, pulses and vegetables, and nuts and seeds … presents major opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” the report states.
