Drive unit replacement under warranty yet costing $5k

A few weeks ago the 2016 P90D got a power reduced error with the turtle icon. Tesla SC decided it would need a new drive unit. Lo and behold while the RDU is covered but it seems somehow they think those wire harness need replacements as well that ending up with a quote of $5,400 CAD. Is it a normal Tesla thing or the SC is not being reasonable?

Nope, have them perform the warranty work only if they cant or will not say why the harness needs to be replaced. If you decide to pay for the harness, make sure you ask for the old harness to be returned for inspection

Have you talked to a Tesla service advisor about it yet? If the original fault is the drive unit, you shouldn’t be paying for new harnesses. It sounds to me like the new DU requires new harnesses and they are trying to charge you for it. If it’s a DU problem, ask them for one that is compatible with the old harnesses or have them cover the cost of the harnesses if the new DU is not compatible.
They are obligated to fix the DU under warranty without cost to you (if the DU is the root cause of the problem).

Not surprised. I recently watched a YouTuber explain how Tesla charged him $2,200 to fix a broken electronic unit even though it failed under warranty. They told him it was "customer pay" because he let his battery get into the low single digits of charge while road tripping! The car broke down on the side of the road and he had to be towed.

So much for Tesla high vaunted BMS expertise and amazing engineering! Apparently it is 100% on you NOT to follow the in-car navigation system that has you arriving at your next supercharger with a low state of charge, and you needed to be the BMS, because Tesla can't be expected to make software that works.
