Replacing Out of Warranty Drive Unit and Now a New Harness???

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
Concluded with my Tesla service center that I needed a new DU as they found that the passenger side has metal shavings indicating that the pinion gear has been compromised. Okayed original repair bill for $6600, but now I need a new harness due to corrosion and now it's $8,475. I can bypass getting the new harness, but they'd void the 4years/50k mile warranty on the remanufactured DU.

Is it a normal Tesla thing or the SC is not being reasonable?

Ask for your old parts to be returned to you since you are paying out of pocket. They are not entitled to your parts. That way you can have the parts inspected if you suspect that there is nothing wrong with the harness or drive unit

2012 P85. After spending $20k for a new replacement pack, $7k for new "U" version RDU, $2k on PTC heater, and $2k for MCU2 upgrade at Tesla, I have not found them to be unreasonable. :)

For the pack and RDU replacement (which I had done at two different Tesla Service Centers), I was given a loaner when Tesla didn't have to. On one loaner I was given permission to go beyond their 250 mile/day limit. Further, although there is typically a $500 core for RDU, they let me have my old RDU free, which I then sold to reduce my overall cost.

For my current out of warranty DU replacement, they have provided me with a model 3 for a week so far and I got a new
BATTERY,90KWH,SX(1014116-00-B) 2 months before my warranty expired.

Perhaps I'm the unreasonable one?

If you're paying out of pocket then I'd try to avoid getting a reman drive unit.

In my case I was originally quoted a reman T drive unit. I wasn't happy getting another motor with coolant leak problem and asked how much to get a new U unit and it basically came to same price. I just had to wait a few weeks for it to be ordered in. I specifically asked for the part 1002633-01-U.

I would much rather get a new motor than a reman of questionable quality.

You're right. I just got a new U version RDU for my 2012 P85. New is $6k base, reman is $800 less.Screenshot_20240206_212527_Drive.jpg

Ask them to take photos of the pins in the connector. Corrosion on the outside of a sealed connector with o-rings really doesn't mean a damn thing.
Found the culprit. I feel more okay paying for this than typical, "corrosion". Definitely don't want limp mode.

I thought the earlier estimate says that the half shafts are in good condition, but somehow they decided to give me one for free. Maybe I'm reading it wrong? 🤔

I had the new U variant installed this past December. Out of warranty, coolant in the LDU. I paid the $8k+ bill on 12/27. It was a fiasco. The car was dropped off before Thanksgiving. Selling the car, had a buyer lined up, started a test drive with said buyer and a terrible noise started to come from the passenger side rear of the car.

I just dropped it off at the service center yesterday for ANOTHER LDU replacement. Just an FYI.....do with that what you will!

Man, if I'd been the buyer, I'd have held out and still bought it from you in order to the car with a new DU at the same price.

I'm assuming the second DU was done under warranty since the brand new one they put in just failed?
