It has a 10-15x higher mortality rate than seasonal influenza, has no vaccine or cure, is highly contagious and transmissble through breath as opposed to coughing, sneezing, etc. It survives on surfaces for several hours, does not seem to be particularly affected by climate (Australia have it just as bad and they're in the high 20s), etc.

Whilst it seems to only be killing people with weakened immune systems, it is nevertheless going to kill hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of people before it gets to a point where it is under control.

The absolute best takeaway from it is that it will hopefully be a massive wakeup call for humanity to think about how much funding is dedicated to healthcare and the sciences.

Well said! We are on the cusp of a massive sh1t fest and those who think otherwise don't really understand.

I do wish people would understand that the fact there are limited ICU beds ( in all countries ) , and the fact this flu will cause the need for those beds to far exceed that number available, is going to cause many , many people to die. Not just people with this virus but people having heart attacks, strokes, involvement in serious accidents, suffering from cancer will all be affected severely too.

We might like his cars but Musk doesn’t seem to understand some very basic concepts here and should keep his mouth closed so his foot stays out if it.

And anyone still comparing this with common flu is an utter moron.

I have always felt that Musk is half Steve Jobs, half Donald Trump.

Donal Trump can change his mind (He was animated and underestimated Covid-19 in January but he became more serious in March when people with Covid-19 positives were allowed to be in his proximity)

But good luck on changing the mind of Elon Musk who has been downplaying the Covid-19 threats!

He is an engineer so he makes uses of data a lot.

His calculation is expressed in the e-mail to employees:

"My best guess, for what it is worth, based on the latest Center for Disease Control data, is that confirmed COVID-19 (this specific form of the common cold) cases will not exceed 0.1% of the US population. Moreover, I do not think, when we look back on 2020, that the causes of death or serious injury will have changed much from 2017, for example: (CDC statistic)."

Many people will not change their minds until the number of Covid-19 deaths is actually more than average flu death which is currently at 22,000 to 55,000 from 10/01/2019 to 03/07/2020.

As of 03/18/2020, CDC only lists 97 Covid deaths, so it is difficult to convince Elon Musk and his fans of a more deadly potential threat.

To them, they need concrete proof of more than 55,000 deaths and not just projections or speculations.

However, health professionals do not wait for that number to become reality because they are trained to prevent such a scenario in any possible way they could.

How about some good news?

-China has closed down its last coronavirus hospital. Not enough new cases to support them.

- Doctors in India have been successful in treating Coronavirus. Combination of drugs used: Lopinavir, Retonovir, Oseltamivir along with Chlorphenamine. They are going to suggest same medicine, globally.

- Researchers of the Erasmus Medical Center claim to have found an antibody against coronavirus.

- A 103-year-old Chinese grandmother has made a full recovery from COVID-19 after being treated for 6 days in Wuhan, China.

- Apple reopens all 42 China stores,

- Cleveland Clinic developed a COVID-19 test that gives results in hours, not days.

- Good news from South Korea, where the number of new cases is declining.

- Italy is hit hard, experts say, only because they have the oldest population in Europe.

- Scientists in Israel likely to announce the development of a coronavirus vaccine.

- 3 Maryland coronavirus patients fully recovered; able to return to everyday life.

- A network of Canadian scientists are making excellent progress in Covid-19 research.

- A San Diego biotech company is developing a Covid-19 vaccine in collaboration with Duke University and National University of Singapore.

- Tulsa County's first positive COVID-19 case has recovered. This individual has had two negative tests, which is the indicator of recovery.

- All 7 patients who were getting treated for at Safdarjung hospital in New Delhi have recovered.

- Plasma from newly recovered patients from Covid -19 can treat others infected by Covid-19.

So it's not all bad news. Let's care for each other and stay focused on safety of those most vulnerable.

I do hope this is correct. However, credible references would be appreciated please to give us all some reassurance

Odd... at 1430 on 18 March, MSNBC reported the factory was staying in operation, and that Elon had emailed everyone that coming to work was optional, to stay home if they felt unwell.

Tesla told to shut down California factory to help fight the coronavirus

"Tesla is not exempt from the San Francisco Bay Area’s new coronavirus shelter-in-place order, and should suspend normal operations at its Fremont, California factory for three weeks, according to county officials and the local sheriff’s office. This comes after Tesla kept its factory open and running today, the first day that the new order was in place."

There is an acknowledged much lower mortality in people under 60. Above 60 it increases with age until aged 80+ it is reportedly as (shockingly) high as 19%

Get people over this age throughly isolated (yes I know it is a lot of people, but government can issue strong guidelines how to do this safely) and would have to be for as long a 6 months.

Allow the virus to spread in the rest of the population in a slowed but measured way, increasing/decreasing restrictions as necessary to manage NHS loading. This will build up so called "herd immunity" but will also permit the economy to continue to function. As this "herd immunity" increases with time it will act as a natural brake on virus spread and ultimately this immunity is the only way out of this awful disease until/unless a workable vaccine is developed.

This is the only way in my (entirely unspecialised) calculation the world can get through this.

Trying to stop it in its tracks as China appear to have attempted to do just risks endless flare ups and ongoing chaos. And that is in an autocratic country utterly different to western society where candidly such control simply is not possible to achieve.

Forget not also the macro soft wars that will be increasingly fought as Russia, China jockey with the West for position in an emerging new world order. Just pray someone doesn't overstep the mark. In my estimation the doomsday clock has moved significantly closer to midnight, a hot war is much closer now than we would like to think. Closer to home, society is less robust than we might think, I have read as little as 3 weeks without primary services is sufficient to lead to a total breakdown of order. New Orleans post Katrina was viewed by some as a test case for this.

my 2p

having cheered everyone up, i'm now off to find that rather nice single malt. 40% alcohol might not be enough to kill it but I'm quite happy to keep trying.

take care all.

Sucks

And I think his opinion is spot on.

What do you think these folks opinion is?

Tend to agree and this (plus a vaccine) provides an exit strategy. Quite a while to achieve this though and we have to hope that order is maintained. The frenzy at the stores doesn't bode well, or the numerous cocky tw@ts on social media who are flouting the guidance seemingly without a care. Pretty grim at the moment :(
