@h2ofun I simply quoted you what the text book definition of those two words are.Incorrect, that is Communism: ( all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs)
Socialism: a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. There is many freedoms, like movement, speech, ownership, etc.
News flash: USA has a good deal of socialism in its system.
Yep, socialism, community as a whole. AKA, unions, fair wage, etc.
It's an article about the companies, not the workers. There choice
One could also make a pretty compelling argument that targeted tax credits that favor big corporations is also a form of socialism dressed up as capitalism. You don't hear those companies who benefit (or their investors) complaining about socialism though.@h2ofun
I think you are a bit confused about your terminology. As others have pointed out, Communism is a system where the state owns (most) everything and distributes resources according to need. Socialism is a system where the community regulates (but does not own) resources and decides how they are distributed.
We should also include Democracy. The US likes to think of itself as a Democracy but it isn't. The President is decided through an arcane process which allows a minority to take control (witness Bush and Trump; both of whom have been unfortunate disasters - Afghanistan and Fascism among other issues). The Senate is also not democratic since it allows small population states to have the same votes as large. Even our House of Representatives is skewed by gerrymandering and voter suppression to be undemocratic.
Like it or not, the US does have many attributes of a socialist government where the community has decided to distribute resources according to need, not power:
- Social Security provides a minimum level of resources to the poor and disabled
- Medicare and Medicaid provide health services regardless of wealth or income
- Food Stamps (SNAP) provide a minimum amount of food assistance
- Education is free to everyone up to grade 12
- Housing assistance is available for low income people
- Unemployment benefits
One could argue that many of these benefits are inadequate (and others would like to reduce or eliminate them) but the fact that they exist means that the US has at least some Socialist elements.
The Green New Deal is an effort to make the US more Socialist by expanding existing programs and starting new programs to improve social support, infrastructure and deal with the climate emergency.
I think it is a worthy cause.

These are government services. So military, police, firefighter would be communism! LOL
And for those of us who spent their own money putting in solar panels and battery storage, who bought electric cars and electric heating, put in their own wells, what do we get? No, let's encourage those who drag their feet and need subsidies to move ahead. As a teacher, I've been teaching climate change for fifty years, but no one wants to listen, no one wants to change their life style, no one wants to cut back. As one climate scientists said, "We're screwed."Here are some of the proposals that are currently in the bill:
Massive investments in retrofitting homes and buildings to save energy.
Massive investment in the production of wind, solar and other forms of sustainable energy.
A major move toward the electrification of transportation, including generous rebates to enable working families to buy electric vehicles and energy-efficient appliances.
Major investments in greener agriculture.
Major investments in climate resiliency and ecosystem recovery projects.
Major investments in water and environmental justice.
Major investments in research and development for sustainable energy and battery storage.
Billions to address the warming and acidification of oceans and the needs of coastal communities.
The creation of a Civilian Climate Corps which will put hundreds of thousands of young people to work transforming our energy system and protecting our most vulnerable communities.
Benefit of biofuel is questionable and it's bad for engines. Glad to see this change. BTW, we've moving to EVs, haven't you heard? Or just trolling the administration?Biden EPA bowing to big oil, at the expense of the planet.
Exclusive: EPA to urge U.S. biofuel blending mandates below 2020 levels, sources say
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to recommend to the White House reducing federal biofuel blending mandates for 2021 to below 2020 levels in what would be a blow to the biofuels industry, two sources familiar with the matter said on Friday. The EPA also is expected to make a...news.yahoo.com
Let's see - burn renewables, or burn fossil fuels... Wonder which is better for the planet. What is your view on COVID vaccination - questionable? Masks?Benefit of biofuel is questionable
Not in 2021 or 2022 we're not. So your approach is simply eliminate the demand for fossil fuels, and there is no need for regulation?? Seems not too long ago you were arguing the opposite.BTW, we've moving to EVs, haven't you heard?
Did you read the article?Benefit of biofuel is questionable and it's bad for engines. Glad to see this change. BTW, we've moving to EVs, haven't you heard? Or just trolling the administration?
Conveniently ignores (does not dispute) Biden lowering renewable requirement in 2021 from oil-loving Trump's 2020 levels.Did you read the article?
Try this one, about the same story, but with a different headline:
Ethanol in gas has been studied extensively and found to use more fossil fuel as well as damage to environment, agriculture. Not Green.Conveniently ignores (does not dispute) Biden lowering renewable requirement in 2021 from oil-loving Trump's 2020 levels.
Both articles are based on Reuters. First that I linked was the actual Reuters report. Second is a secondary report based on the Reuters information and is about 2022 levels, and does not mention the drop for 2021.
Here is another one from Reuters about Biden paying back the oil industry and lobbyists that own him - and probably pay a fee to Hunter.
U.S. refiners amass over $1 bln biofuel liability as Biden admin mulls relief
U.S. merchant refiners have amassed up to a $1.6 billion shortfall in the credits they will need to comply with U.S. biofuel laws, according to a Reuters review of corporate disclosures, an apparent bet that the Biden administration could let them off the hook or that credit prices will fall.www.reuters.com
Really surprised how many people in this thread disagree with renewable energy requirements - that is the "green" part of the green new deal.
