Hertz buying 100,000 Teslas

The way new and used car prices are right now, Hertz can make money selling their used cars for more than new.

Well, they bought them for $42k per vehicle.

So, Hertz didn't buy the FSD software. Musk confirmed Hertz paid retail.

There is nothing stopping Tesla buying them back at auction or directly from Hertz at significant discount after they accumulate 20k plus miles and putting them into the robotaxi network.

Don't worry! You can prepay for a full tank of electrons for just $50 to avoid $5/kWh fee for returning not-full…

I wonder if Tesla will have deeper integration with rental companies more than just vehicle profiles such as carrying over kWh associated to the Tesla account or maybe even integrated Tesla billing.
All tanks always have a full complement of electrons. They just have to be given a little energy and segregated before they can make the car go.
 
Tesla was supposed to be bankwupt and long dead by now. Their nascent charging network was going to die with them.

The industry more or less got together to shun Tesla's SC network so they could go off and do just about nothing.

It's telling that the largest and best charging network (Tesla) is completely proprietary and works so well that other EV manufacturers are secretly hoping their customers can get access. Meanwhile, non-Tesla owners are still having basic handshaking problem with one-trick pony specialist outfits like Electrify America.

The history is a little bit more complicated.

Search for CCS vs CHAdeMO. BTW, Tesla was part of the J1772 standards committee - but they decided not to use J1772. The standards were decided by SAE and not politicians.

You could say Japanese / US+German OEMs played a big part with Tesla just a small player at that time. We are talking about 2000s.

Now they have found an other way to get access to the cars.

I predict that Hertz will need to buy a lot more EVs. Smart if they choose Tesla.

This might be a second use for Hertz. Rent to customers while the vehicles are new, then farm them out to the uber pool once the interior starts getting a little worn.

Buy new Teslas to replace the rental fleet.

I wonder if you have to return the car at the same charge level? Also, I wonder how supercharging will work. I assume Hertz will upcharge you. Let’s them charge per mile..

I believe you are correct.

I'm assuming that Hertz will put in level 2 chargers, Tesla wall connectors likely, and the charge rate is pitifully slow. (Please bring back the high speed on board chargers tesla!) That means if you return it empty it'll be 8 hours before Hertz can rent it out again. That is lost revenue to them so it would seem that they would be fools not to charge you.

As to supercharging, I'm pretty sure that it will be included with the rental cost. I'm guessing they'll be charging on a per mile basis after all. Easy enough to include those costs in the rental charge.

Overall, this sounds like a really great business move for Hertz.

And as I said...here is Tesla supplying vehicles to a rideshare competitor.
Since the DoJ requires Tesla to vet Elon Musk social media post with material content show me one post where Elon makes a factually incorrect material statement regarding Tesla's business. Not his opinions on Grimes music or whatever.

Hertz CEO Mark Fields confirms on CNN their Model 3s will not come with FSD. Only Standard Autopilot.

Tesla is not in the rideshare business.

For many, this will be their first EV experience.

I’m pretty sure it will be through some non owner login mechanism via the Tesla app. Owner with registered email logs in, gets regular Tesla vehicle app. NON owner logs in, request integration to payment mechanism, Apple Pay, Google pay, CC, Bitcoin, whatever and when you show up at a Supercharger you simply type in the SC number into the app and the about to occur/current/most recent charging session is billed directly at NON owner supercharger rates. It’s not hard to do based on what is already in place.

I think there will be SOME retrofit or augment required for some locations, because ppl will need an adaptor. I can see an Amazon locker type setup at some locations to check-in/check-out the adaptor for use at the Tesla SC by say a VW id4, but then you have to put the adaptor back. Some locations might even have an ATTENDANT depending on the location and the premium users WILL pay for access to the SC network.
