FWIW, for some considerable time now (I want to say a couple years) it's been absolutely possible to plug in a locked car. I always check the car last thing at night when I take the dogs out and usually plug in both cars if they're not already connected, I don't remember the last time I needed the key.
Do you keep you Key Fob near the car? if it is within radio reception range, the car will unlock and allow you to unplug the charger. Try the same thing after locking the car and moving the Key Fob much further away. In my case this prevents me from being able to unplug my HPWC. A future software feature might be the ability to unplug while car is locked in "approved" locations (ie. home garage).
With my UMC plugged into a 5-15:
- My early 2016 X: unplugable
- A 2017 X: stays locked and flashes blue
- A 2015 S with the old manual-close charge door: unpluggable
With these anecdotal tests I can conclude only that it might work for you. All three had different but modern software versions on the display, but who knows what the charger firmware or hardware revision is.
