I ordered a Performance 3. The car at delivery was an AWD.

On Monday I went to the Montreal dealership for delivery of my P3D-, MSM, 18" aeros, white interior. There were 5 or 6 M3's inside the showroom awaiting delivery, and I went to the one that fit my order, and the vin was mine. The car was pristine inside and out, very well detailed and waxed. The paperwork went quickly and smoothly, and the car appeared in my app.

That’s when I noticed that the red line under Dual Motor was missing in the app. I checked and it was also missing on the car’s screen. I also noticed that the choices for Acceleration in the car’s settings were Chill and Standard (Instead of Sport).

I brought this to the attention of the DS, and pretty soon, several technicians were checking the car and their computers, and they got in touch with engineering in the US. They confirmed that the car was AWD and promised a quick fix. It took about 30 minutes for the red lines to appear, and Standard also changed to Sport, and soon I was on my way. I come from a 70D model S, and had taken delivery of my daughter’s RWD back in June and drove it around for a couple of weeks, and this car’s acceleration was totally something else.

Today I did a couple of runs (in opposite directions) with my G-tech RR from 2008, and got 3.3 and 3.4 seconds 0-60. I looked at the old runs from back then, my V10 M6 BMW with launch control was good for 4.45-4.6 seconds. I am in awe, and can't seem to wipe the stupid grin from my face.

I had a great delivery experience, my new car is perfect, not even a minute blemish, and everything works. Also all the other cars that I checked while waiting were similarly immaculate. I simply cannot understand the horror stories from other delivery locations. I'll be going back this weekend to help them with deliveries.

So they just didn't apply the right software settings to 'unlock' the PAWD....not that big of a deal, and certainly better than actually not having the 'burned in' motors that the PAWD comes with (I'm assuming they would not have unlocked the extra power otherwise). Either way, glad it was easily solved for your sake, and enjoy!

I've seen a couple reports of this happening so far. I wonder if there is are any poor souls out there who have no idea their Performance 3's are running in a reduced capacity. Not everyone is a die-hard fan such as those on this forum and likely have no idea they might be missing something.

Likely the acceleration curve gain setting and BMS management.

The cat's out of the bag.

This proves that all the AWDs are performance capable to stream line parts and production. That's a huge margin gain for Tesla when someone wants Performance $.$

Will Tesla offer Performance upgrade to AWD owners who want the boost after delivery for a premium like EAP? Or free trial to get people addicted to the speed ;)

Was the car a regular AWD or built with "performance binned" motors and drives? No way to know!
Was the car unlocked to Performance with only the screen settings missing, or was it 100% AWD? Again no way to know.
One thing I know is that the car is still AWD in my "view car details" page on my Tesla account.

In any case I am fully satisfied with my car, it way exceeds my expectations in build quality and performance.

I work in automotive supplying OEMs with tech and hardware for their tooling.

From a production standpoint, AWD and PAWD sharing the same components makes sense. Streamlining and reducing complexity is the key to economy of scale. Instead of building 50000 regular motors and spend a little more for 50000 P motors, it's more economical to R&D, build 100000 P motors and use them at 80% of rated power.

On a side note... I think the Aluminum/Steel tariffs are being pass off with the paint $ increase no the M3. Lets see how NAFTA talks go in the next couple of weeks. The supply chain will be whacked if there's 25% tax on cars and Ontario will go into recession.
