Implications for refunding SR+ to downgrade to SR

SR+ owners are in two categories.
1. those who wanted the SR+ based on the "software" aspect of the package (as well as maybe hardware aspect).
- heated seats
- 5.3 sec
- 240 mile range
- better sound system

2. those who wanted the hardware upgrade without caring much about software aspect.
- Partial Premium interior
- power seats
- foglamps

People in group #2 don't care so much about things in #1 and they could have gotten everything they wanted in a SR for $2000-2500( + tax) less.

I am in group #1, so I have no desire to downgrade to SR

And whether AP is free or not is still to be seen.

At this point for me the only reason I would move up to SR+ is for heated seats. If I go with standard SR now, is it possible to upgrade to just get the heated seats, but not the other things that come with +? I won't miss them now but in December I'll be wishing my butt was warm.

It should become available.
I read that in one of the articles when the changes were coming.

If they did offer heated seats on SR 2 weeks ago for $750 or less, I would be probably still waiting for my SR.
But I like my SR+ now and I won't downgrade.

Just trying to wrap my head around this... reading through all the threads and posts on Reddit. My understanding are that the below captures an owner downgrading from an SR+ to an SR:

  • You will not have heated seats (front or rear)
  • You will lose 10% road-trip range (daily range same @ 100% w/no impact to battery life)
  • Potentially lose 0-60 in 5.3 (SR was 5.6)
  • Potentially lose immersive sound & use of 1 speaker (8 vs 7 speakers)
  • Potentially lose LED fog lights
  • Potentially lose driver profiles
  • Potentially miss out on getting free streaming + traffic
Am I missing anything?

My SR+ does not have free streaming + traffic

Just as an FYI you will still get a warning about charging to 100% repeatedly causing degradation on a software locked car...

Potentially lose driver profiles

Driver profiles were listed as a feature of the SR, but they might decide to exclude seat/steering wheel position from what it included in the profile..

Normally, that would be the case. But now there is no PHSYICAL distinction between premium interior and base model interior, not even the glass roof or wood dash, which was promised to only be included in the "Premium" interior edition only. The difference being a few speakers and an amp.

Yes it is annoying for the loyal early buyers who felt they were being smart and supporting Tesla buying fully loaded Models and as a reward would get $7500 federal tax credit. Early buyers were told the PUP was $5k and you got premium materials, data, premium sound, premium seating, glass roof and a center console but now we know that was false and the $35k model is nearly identical minus the range. 9k was price for the extended battery. At the time Tesla kept pushing how everyone pays the same price. It's logical people thought those would be the standard costs and could choose to buy or wait with the SR battery and PUP uncoupled to get to the 35k price point. Then comes 2019 and everything has fallen through the roof and there is steep drops and free software. Bad precedents were set by giving people free upgrades and checks back and inventory discounts and new packages. It's creating a culture to waiting to buy at the end of the quarter and it's dangerous for Tesla to be perceived this way as it will hit their margins hard.

I was peaved initially because my $56k RWD LR was now $7k cheaper even after the federal tax rebate. I took matters in my own hand and got a brand new P3D with 7 miles, autopilot, blue on white at a $7700 discount at the end of the quarter. Upgrading to new model was only around 5k after factoring taxes and I was happy again as I had used my LR RWD 3 for 13k miles. My dad also got a P100D S unused with EAP for 77k! Perception of a deal made us feel good. I'm all for dropping prices over time but this has been really erratic and creating a group of ultra entitled people. I see people who got the SR+ or a car in 2019 demanding free autopilot which is absurd if you are past the 7 day return period. Recent buyers since the March drops should not be complaining as they got more than what was promised since the Model 3 came out at a fantastic value. Tesla is not a socialist company that can give handouts to all, they need to survive. Buy when you are ready with the full expectation that the price will drop or something else will be added for free next year and keep your peace. If that is something you cannot stomach then get a used one down the line or simply don't buy a Tesla.
