Long delay replacing Model 3 Windscreen

Tesla had screens I would be expecting Autoglass to buy it from them
Insurance is using cheapest-route, least service. That may in turn mean that Autoglass are bulk-buying, or something else that gets them cheapest-price, and is everything other than "Just get one from Tesla Stores"

I've had so much trouble with my insurance company and windscreen replacement that the nature of service on windscreen replacement will be a factor in chose of insurer in future. Insurer has done nothing whatsoever to help me except "Call AutoGlass", they have had zero interest when I have had a problem with AutoGlass service.

Couple that with Tesla doing a far better job of installing a replacement screen than (in my experience) AutoGlass, I'd prefer to have insurance that would give me the option of getting Tesla to do it ... no idea if such a policy exists, but I seem to claim every year or two for a windscreen on one of our vehicles, and it seems to always be a major hassle.

OK I know I'm being naïve, and my experiences with Autoglass over the years have been simple and positive unlike some others.

There's clearly something wrong if both Tesla and Autoglass can't get a supply of new screens for Model 3, someone senior in Tesla UK needs to know and have a plan to fix it. If the problem is just Autoglass refusing to buy at the price from Tesla I would be pointing out to my insurance that I've paid for a service and have protection from the Financial Ombudsman.

Fully appreciate that it's not going to be as easy as I imply, and it's hard to get anywhere with Tesla or Insurance Companies. The Daily Mail would love a negative story about Tesla, interviews with frustrated drivers, could stand next to a broken windscreen with arms folder looking cross and a good chance for their commenters to share their conspiracy theories.

Got a small chip a few weeks ago. Last night it dropped below zero, assume water got in there, froze and now it’s over a foot long crack!🤯 hopefully it will be changed fairly quickly as it’s perfectly in my eye-line.

I saw your post about that! Not ideal at all.

I heard a Commotion at lunch, looked out of the window to see nearly 20 of my colleagues talking about how it was going to cost me a bomb, I shouldn’t have bought such an expensive car and it serves me right. If only they knew it was just made of glass like every other car 🤷🏼‍♂️

I chose today to unplug at lunchtime (probably seeing off the future me) but give them all a thumbs up and not offer a lift back to the office half a mile away.

It’s exactly that mate. Going to try one of those temporary resin jobs from Halfords at the weekend. I’m Overseas for 2 months in a few weeks so if there’s a big delay, I hope it won’t be too much of an issue - but if it grows - or freezes again I could be back to fossil fuels…….😬

One thing to note is that in spite of a significantly crazed screen its still (touch wood) not leaking in spite of recent bad weather.
Apparently there's a film applied to the inside surface of the glass which, I think, would only break if the glass is actually punctured.
I really wish there was an inkling as to when it might be fixed - I didn't get my weekly "no glass sorry" text message from AutoGlass today.

Just gone through the online process to book a replacement and it’s in 8 days. Tues 29 at 1200. May differ in other locations but Gloucester seems to have some in stock or at least on the way. Obvs may change but positive so far. Never had a windscreen replacement in 20 years of driving so will see what happens.

That’s through autoglass if anyone is interested

I think all windscreens have to have a “film” inside 2 sheets of glass so if you get a chip / Rock they don’t explode. Can’t remember the technical word for it. Maybe laminated? Either way they shouldn’t leak if cracked / damaged on any car unless it’s a full on puncture - in which case you probably have bigger issues…….

Wouldn’t worry, having dealt with insurance and autoglass over the last few weeks, I understand there is a specialist team within AG that deals with the Tesla glass. In fairness to them, they send out regular texts like clockwork every Monday - with this Monday providing confirmation the glass is now available.

It strikes me that the so called windscreen is a massive design fault. The insurance companies will catch onto this and refuse to call the ridiculous panoramic roof windscreens. At that point we will all have to make a claim, pay our car damage XS, in my case £900, and suffer higher premiums at renewal. I think with due thought, bring it on as at least we could get the repair done properly at Tesla.
The problems with shortage of supplies will become chronic as the numbers of M3/MY increase exponentially.

Mine already does, in the same section that it excludes a soft top.

Glass damage
What is covered under this section If the glass in the front windscreen, side, rear windows, or sunroof of the car is damaged during the period of insurance the insurer will pay the cost of repairing or replacing it. The insurer will also pay for any repair to the bodywork of the car that has been damaged by broken glass from the windscreen or windows. Windscreen recalibration costs are covered under this section when using an approved repairer, subject to glass provider terms and conditions.
If the repair or replacement is carried out by one of our approved suppliers, cover is unlimited. (To contact one of our approved suppliers please refer to the 'Making a claim section' of this policy.)
If you choose to use your own supplier, then cover will be limited to £150 less any excess.
A claim under this section only will not affect your no claims discount.

What is not covered under section 4
  • The glass excess shown in your Schedule of Insurance.
  • Loss of use of the car.
  • Damaged or broken glass in panoramic glass roofs.
  • Repair or replacement of the hood/roof structure of a convertible or cabriolet vehicle.
  • Repair or replacement of any glass that is part of a removable or folding convertible roof.
  • Repair or replacement of any windscreen or window not made of glass.
  • The cost of importing parts or storage costs caused by delays where the parts are not available from stock within the territorial limits.
  • Loss or damage deliberately caused by any person entitled to be covered under this policy or any person acting on their behalf.
