Loud bang from the rear while turning

Hello everyone,

My 13 Model S 85 just developed a LOUD bang while turning. I was sure my suspension had fallen off, but everything looks intact. I limped home and it sounds absolutely terrible. When turning right it bangs on the rear right and when turning left it bangs on the rear left.

The sound is loud and not muted in any way. It's not a clicking sound.
This ONLY happens while turning left or right.
Speed doesn't matter.

Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm having no luck finding anything online.

Toe link? Axel? CV joint?

May be a dumb question and a dumb thing to try, but any chance there is something in the cubbie beneath the floor of the trunk that is banging around? Maybe the tow hitch is banging around back there on turns?

Thought the same thing at first, but that should make noise on the outside of the turn (left side on right turn).

@brokensendhelp the shock/ spring units may be loose. Does it make the noise at the beginning or end of the turn?

Thanks for the replies. This is definitely not something moving around inside the car. This sound also affects my handling. You can feel that something happens in the rear and the car starts to drift.

There is some play in the half shafts. Is this normal?

I'm thinking it can be the toe link that's worn.

Check your SUSP INTEGRAL LINK ASSY showing as part number 6 in the diagram. they break on the thin part that holds the bushing.

The shaft are usually held in with a snap ring, so a little play in not abnormal. Those shouldn't be able to bang anyway, nor would they impact handling (unless there were binding up). If they were involved, I's expect the noise on the outer side of the turn when things are getting compressed.
If you are getting a loud noise, that sounds more like a loose/ broken connection that wear. Even critically worn rubber parts would be fairly silent.

Does it make the same noise if you make two left (or right) turns in a row?

Have you looked at the rear stabilizer bar?

Thanks everyone so much for the replies. It means the world to me as I'm quite heartbroken right now.

Yes, I canhcan it pop twice if I take two left turns. This happened out of my driveway. Likewise if I turn right.

I have not had the chance to take a super close look due to work, but I will in roughly an hour.

Yes, this describes the situation perfectly. I can feel the car squatting and then veering to one side. As well as the loud pops. Will definitely check for damage.

How much was the repair?

Looking to get parts from Tesla and do it myself. Hoping the parts aren't crazy priced.

If its just the links I paid $80 per side. they area easy to install so if you are handy dont pay Tesla to install.

Please hear this audio recording from 0:20. This is me going in circles. I can actually only reproduce the sound consistently on the right. Circling left does not provoke the sound.

I can feel the wheel slipping. Rear right.

Sounds bad... did you look at the inner CV joints to make sure the axles are seated all the way into the Dive Unit? Sounds as if the axle has came unseated and is skipping on the splines.

By chance do you have a go pro you can mount under the car facing the right rear wheel so you can see whats going on when its making that noise?

So I found that the upper bolt on the link was pretty darn loose. I took the link off. How does it look?

That could make some noise. Other thing to check is if any of the bushings have broken free from their press fit. That happened on our old (2004) SUV, Rear knuckle would clunk back and forth. With the tire on and car supported by the jack point, can you feel any slop? May need to put it in tow mode to spin the wheel to check the bearings/ CV.
