M3LR Squeaky Steering

My car 2020 has developed a loud squeak when the steering is moved. Different to the suspension creak that Tesla fixed some time ago. Does not occur on uneven surfaces so I don't think it is suspension but happens when the steering is moved at low velocity (i.e. substantial steering movements). Any Ideas? Should I ask Tesla to look?

Thanks....and bother. Was hoping it is something simple. Off to the Alps in the car in 10 days time. Wonder if Tesla can fix it by then!

And by the way; if they change the arms does this put the tracking out? I had to take the car to a specialist alignment service because the first set of tyres wore very badly on the inside edge and Tesla insisted the tracking was OK but it was not.

No, the upper arms can be replaced without affecting alignment as long as it's done by someone following the correct procedure.

I had the upper arm squeak on mine a month or so ago and instead of wasting most of a day taking it in to a service centre I injected some grease into the joint myself and it's been quiet ever since. There are threads on here describing how to do it if you want to have a go. Takes all of 5 minutes.

Mines a 2019 M3LR that also had the 'standard' upper control arm suspension fix in mid 2022 has also just started the steering squeak this week.
Update: Booked in on 13th to fix with an estimated £172 cost

Got to love this forum🙂

OK - can you point me at those threads. I have in the past soaked the joints with silicone lubricating spray. If I can grease them then this might be enough to get through our trip to the Alps at least.

Spraying it will make zero difference. You have to inject grease into the joint through the rubber dust seal.

I had a noise coming from the steering column at low speeds. At first they replaced the control and, but it then transpired that it was the steering column itself that was making a grating sound (first I thought it was rubbing against a heat shield). They replaced the column and the noise had gone.

Ta. I can inject some grease.

Well I have the drivers side of the car suspension in bits. Quite easy to get the top ball joint out. Reasonably easy to remove the boot retaining clip from the top of the ball joint and then pull down the rubber boot. In fact my car appeared to have plenty of white coloured grease inside the boot. Was going to add some Moly Grease (black) but don't know what is in there so don't want to mix greases. Moved the grease around to ensure the ball is lubricated.

BUT - having taken the wheel off, once again it is scrubbed on the inside edge. Not as bad as the last time but still incorrect alignment. Any suggestions for an alignment specialist in Edinburgh?

Anyone with a Hunter system should be OK to do a good job on alignment. Can't give you a specific recommendation though, sorry.
It's usually the toe which is at fault, so you shouldn't really need to pay for a full alignment.

Is it not still under warranty ?

I ask because my warranty expires in August so was going to book the car in for a "service" in July with a list of things like this which I'm hoping are warranty. (They did "fix" this 2 years ago but looks like the fix they made wasn't permanent)

Booked with a company to check this afternoon. I am pretty pished that I have now scrubbed two sets of tyres early. And presumably as the tyres are wearing the car efficiency and hence range is down?

Correct. If the toe is too far in or out they are scrubbing when you are on a straight, so not good for wear or efficiency. The specified toe window is quite wide on these cars and they often come from the factory with excessive toe. You really just want a small amount of positive toe (5 minutes or so) on the front so it's not too nervous.
