Same. It would take 4 sites to fill in that gap: Hermosillo, Ciudad Obregón, Los Mochis, and Culiacán. Not sure if it’s in the cards to do it but it would be cool if it ever gets done.
Yah. And it would seem a no brainer if the open a Mexican Tesla plant. We are in maz right now and have seen a few threes driving around. An affordable tesla here would have demand, but only if there is a corridor from Canada to Merida…or at least the pacific coast.

Please don’t make that drive if it opens. We just had a ton of violence in Culiacán out of nowhere and a lot of Americans needed assistance. Dozens carjacked. Obregón is just as dangerous as well. People make the drive safely all the time, but I really do not advise it. There are carjackings and robberies every week. I live in Hermosillo and can’t go to Obregón or Culiacán without an armored car and a police escort.

Los Mochis is an exception, as is Mazatlan, but only if you fly in. Don’t drive from the USA.

A friend goes all the way from Houston to Mexico City in his Model 3. The issue is the West Coast, there is no fast charging between San Diego and Santa Ana, Sonora and then another big gap between Santa Ana and Chihuahua and between Santa Ana and Mazatlan. It is getting better, a new Supercharger in Torreon should be coming live soon. I only go to Ensenada some weekends, that drive is beautiful, that coast is majestic.
Does he cross thru Laredo or the Valley? Planning on doing this trip during Christmas :) I've done it in an ICE before but this would be a first in an EV.

Chilax fam. I always do the drive every once a year from Phoenix to Quila, Culiacán in an ICE vehicle. Never experienced any violence on the road. If you mind your business nobody will do anything to you.

Unless you are those two dead Americans in the news from North Carolina this week
That was Tamaulipas. Completely different part of the country.

Generally speaking I would say Mexico is much safer than the US for tourists. In the US shootings are a regular occurrence and just a part of society. A single shooter can take out 61 people in one day and the next day everything returns to normal. It’s not even a headline for more than a few days. We travel thru the US to get to Mexico. We always relax a bit when we cross the border into Mexico.

Jmho.

Ah, true, I guess I feel immune as I am not the standout person wondering around the US, in Mexico I may be more of a sore thumb, might cause me to relax a bit when I cross the border into the US. And I don't know the info you have about Mexico, apparently there are different parts of the country, but I haven't seen a map of the safe parts vs. the scary parts. I do have a map of where the Superchargers are, hope to get to them all one day.

You're welcome to do what you want to do. But I'm a US diplomat in charge of helping Americans in Sonora and Sinaloa. That's all I do, full time. And there are people who need help every single day, often on the roads. I'm not saying you're likely to get robbed or die. I'm saying it's not worth the risk. Almost every person I help says "I've done this trip a dozen times before." Or "if I knew this could happen I wouldn't have come."

The travel warning level in Matamoros is the same as Culiacán. The safety restrictions on government employees moving around the city are much stricter in Culiacán than matamoros. My Mexican employees don't drive in or through Culiacán either.

Sinaloa is beautiful. Mazatlán is great. Fly in. And definitely drive during daylight if you decide to drive anyway.
