Model 3 Insurance - Young Driver

Hey there, I've just made the initial deposit for a SR+ Model 3 and I now need to sort insurance out and stuff.

I've been trying to search for insurance options but it seems like no one wants to insure me based on the fact that I'm 19. I only managed to find one quote for £14000 which is just absurd.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice for this situation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

That basically says that for a person of your age, there's over a 25% chance that you'll total the car in a year.
I don' t that's too far from reality.

I’m loving all the sound advice from the old farts (which at 56 you would class me as - I don’t). At 19 of course you are going to want the best you can afford, and I’m obviously assuming you can afford it.

My advice would be to try Adrian Flux, there’s another teenager I know of who’s just got his Model X insured via them I believe.

Classic Car Insurance & Specialist Car Insurance | Adrian Flux

My other bit of advice is to do the Advanced Drivers course and test via the Institute of Advanced Motorists

Advanced driving and riding courses | IAM RoadSmart

Best bet is to get your parents to be owner and main named driver and put you on the insurance as a secondary driver, will still be pricey but probably less so. I drove my dad’s Volvo Turbo more than he did back in the 90s when I was 17 and never wrapped it around a tree, but then again the 0-60 was 9.6!

The insurance companies are wise to fronting and it could invalidate insure so is not recommend!

Just keep looking. When I was 20 I put a deposit down on an M3 (BMW!) without looking into insurance. I went to Adrian Flex who at the time were one of few high performance/young driver specialists, the quote was £20k with a £10k excess! I thought I would have to pull out of the purchase but kept looking and eventually found Tesco at £1500 with £250 excess. This was nearly 20 year ago so a little different but don't give up and good luck :)

Keep looking, i'm only 24 and have got quoted £1300 with LV or not much more to stay with admiral who i'm already with for my LR AWD when it eventually gets here and that is with me with 3 points on my license too. Luckily ill be 25 next year so should drop a bit!!

You guys need to chill a bit, I've only made the deposit so early cause I know how long it takes to deliver the car. If I can't find any reasonable solution i'll just get it refunded.
Keep looking and try all the Tesla Insurance companies (you may need to speak to them in person rather than completing an online quote). Also agree with Parents as a Main driver as it may help reduce the cost - also they may need to fit a blackbox of some kind but not sure on that bit?

LV
Novo
Directline
Churchill
RAC (Not live yet but apparently will be soon)
Can not remember the others but have a look around

And well done for being able to afford this kind of car (although the insurance bit is the pain)

I know of a few (not many) 18-25 year old that were young entrepreneur's and did well young and that had Porches, Ferrari's, AMG's, M3's etc at that young age so its not unusual (just rare).

I'm 28 with 8 years NCD, no points and a licence for 10 years and the cheapest I found for SR+ was £1,889 with Direct Line. Which is £600 more than my Jag XE and £1200 more than the Seat Leon I had before that.

So this makes me very upset

Insurance is a lottery, but yeah, it's insanely expensive - I'm 29 and am getting my lowest quotes between £720-950. That's with 6 years NCB, out of the South East, but I still have to state that someone wrote off my car at a red light in 2017 (claim made against his insurance, didn't affect mine), so that bumps it up unfortunately.

I was privileged enough that I got a newish Ford Fiesta with 3000 miles on the clock when I was a 17 y.o. (that was unwillingly was written off in the aforementioned 2017 incident - R.I.P.) - the insurance for that was bonkers, too. I have a Zoe now - I could do my old 120 mi round trip commute on one charge with 25-30% charge remaining, so I can fully recommend that (I'm selling my current Q90 40kWh one to give way to the SR+ I'm leasing).

A lot of the guys are giving, maybe too, stern pieces of advice, but you likely knew it already. If you have access to the amount of cash for an SR+, you can certainly get a very nice plugin hybrid or another EV car (subject to waiting lines).

All the best!

I think you probably need to look at specialist insurers. Just be aware that some brokers take their fees up front, so if you end up wanting to cancel, there may not be much left to get a refund from. Also, some specialist insurers do not accrue NCD which may restrict choice later. I used a small specialist broker when I was younger and they were fantastic. They don't exist now otherwise I would have recommended them.

Finally, I know others have said it, and some don't like to hear it, but circumstances change, sometimes very quickly. Make sure that you still put something away for a rainy day or two, and pension, house deposit etc etc. What may seem along way in to the future, comes around pretty quick - even quicker if you put something away for it earlier rather than later. Sermon over.

Have you tried compare the market? I’m south east based and just checked my premium which is now at £750 for the LR model....? Seems £1899 is really high.

Isn’t that legally defined as “fronting” and in fact illegal if the actual main driver of the car is the 19 year old as is likely in this case?

Not the right approach but I’m sure plenty do it nonetheless and hope no one notices. I’d imagine they’d notice with a performance car like this though.

I’d personally love to have been able to afford a car like this at 19. Fair play to you.

You only live once  PS. If you do get the Model 3 take care, or this statement will be only too accurate o_O

Wow some people are pretty sad, good luck to you if you can get a Tesla at 19, why not. when I was 17 I had a triumph 2.5 PI not a T3 (which I bought myself I might Add) there will be ways to get insurance, just got to try every way. but most of all they look for experience of driving performance cars, something you may not have, so maybe try and do some driving courses etc. see if you can get put on other polices of faster cars etc. if you have in the family.

Good Luck.

The responses on this thread from 90% of users are pathetic, I love this forum and have found it incredibly useful but the response you've received on this thread is a joke!

I was 20 years old when I brought a Porsche and I'm now 26 and taking delivery of a Model 3 Performance as a 2nd car next week - everyone told me I couldn't get insured however my experience is ring every insurance company and just when you think it's not possible, 1 will come through with a quote which works for you!

My insurance is now with Admiral and has been for a few years, I insure both cars and my home for less than £2k per year at 26.
