Model S Exterior: Paint Armor

Which product? I paid about 2k (after tax) for the entire front of the car fully wrapped (edges tucked and rolled) and rocker panels plus partial coverage on the rear fenders with Suntek. Xpel would have run 20% more.

Seems high. I paid $1395 for full front coverage - XPEL Ultimate, full hood, full fenders, full bumper, full nose cone, and side mirrors. All edges fully wrapped. XPEL Ultimate is self healing. If you scratch it, come back 20 minutes later it is gone. Best product on the market.

For those interested in a detailed understanding of what is involved to install paint protection film, I have a good link for you. The company that installed my film, Metropolitan Detail (Bellevue, WA), recently added a very comprehensive step by step installation page to their website. This page illustrates a complete wrap of a Model S using Xpel film with approximately 40 pictures covering all steps. http://metropolitandetail.com/2013/03/surge-protection-tesla-model-s-full-wrap/ As someone who has owned black cars all my life, paint protection film eliminates the maintenance problem (swirls and scratches) for all those stunning dark colors. Does anyone know if there are pattern kits available for any of the less commonly covered parts of the car, such as the doors, the full rear bumper, and the rear deck lid (upper trunk hatch)? I see patterns online (from Xpel, for example) with coverage similar to Tesla's factory coverage, and sometimes expanding to include full hood, front fenders and rocker panels. Have any of the other film makes, or detail shops like Al & Eds or Metropolitan Detail produced patterns for the whole Model S?

I have the full hood and fenders done, and of course I just took a tiny stone chip on my rear deck lid, which was supposed to never get hit with stones (Murphy's Law in action), so I am considering moving to a full wrap...but wanting to avoid trimming with a blade on any painted sections.

Great link to their process on the site.

Also great idea for someone (like me) who has also had black cars for my last 6 cars. I wasn't even thinking about the clear bra solving the swirl and scratch problem. I was purely thinking of it protecting the front part of the car from stones getting kicked up.

Confirmed my decision to do it. Now I just have to wait the 6 weeks or so til the car is here ...

In my experience with Metropolitan Detail, they did not have access to a suitable Xpel pattern kit for the Model S (although this could change in time). I assume patterns cut down the time and cost. However, if the pattern shape shows an edge, then I would not select that approach. At Metropolitan Detail their approach is to cut to wrap around all surfaces (with just a couple of minor exceptions) so no film edges are visible. And no blades are ever used directly on the paint.

Back in the first week of January, I got my Xpel PPF film installed and they already had computer templates for the Model S. Everything is laser cut onsite and there's a software option to oversize the edges to allow them to wrap around. They only thing they did not have was the new nose cone.

I did the full wrap front clip (fender, hood, bumper, headlights, foglights) lower rockers, pillars by windshield, and full rear bumper. The Xpel software had the templates for pillars, rockers, full front clip already there, saw it on the software they use to cut the patterns. The rear bumper was custom.

If you had the doors and trunk hatch covered then yeah, that would be custom as most cars don't come with templates on those parts.

Thanks Shokunin, that confirms what my installer is saying. He has requested that Xpel create patterns for the rest, and Metropolitan Detail said they heard Tesla was developing complete patterns, but nothing available yet. I am a little scared of the trimming with a blade concept, and wonder if I should wait. Though waiting means gathering scratches and swirls...

Hope to receive my P85 in midMay. Have done all my previous cars with front PPF. Most recently I have been using Rick Nelson at Unique Car Care in Wakeflield. he is one of the top 10 detailers in the country and does amazing work. I am in Natick so it's a bit of a schlep but worth it. Best part is he will make sure the paint is perfect before he puts on the film. Xpel Ultimate wrapped on all edges. He will be doing mine. Perhaps we can get a better deal if we get a group together. Hope that helps.

Looks like 3M is releasing a new DIY kit called "3M Paint Defender". Its a spray-on -- for $25 per can, plus a an application kit and spray trigger. Looks like 3-4 cans would do a full hood, front bumper and mirrors -- so under $120 material cost for those areas.

Box states "protects for 1 year" -- so I'm guessing it will yellow fairly quickly.

Who's going to be the first to try it?

I know this has been addressed before. but Here is what I just sent Ownership Experience:

Hand washing my own cars gives great perspective.
The paint armor product purchased with the car seems to be an inferior product.
Just finished washing it and found a couple of new bubbles and two places where it is peeling back at the edges.
I have had the technician out twice and need to have him out again. I would really hate to have to have him out every month.
The product bubbles, and fits at the edges.
Never had this happen with other products e.g. a 2006 Lexus RX350 (never a problem) my 2010 Lexus RX 350 which goes to the mountains every week (never a problem), 2004 MB SL500, lasted for 9 years then finally had to replace it from one edge fraying.

Here is the question:
Will you be willing to replace it with a higher quality product?
Or will you refund the price of the Paint Armor and let me replace it?

Has anyone gotten any results from Tesla regarding the poor quality of the Paint Armor?

Just askin'

When I had my car delivered the Delivery Specialist proactively pointed out a large bubble on the bumper. After detailing the car the first time I noticed a couple of large bubbles and many small bubbles on almost every piece of paint amor. My local service manager just asked me to take photos of the bubbles so that he could order the proper pieces. Just about the only major piece of paint armor that didn't have bubbles was the piece on the frunk and ironically I paid to have it removed and replaced with a piece for the entire frunk to eliminate the visible line.

I'm very happy with the attention to detail of the Delivery Specialist (Ben Bird) and responsiveness of the Tampa Service Center Manager (Mark LaPlant) and I never felt that I needed to get Ownership Experience involved in resolving the issue. In fact, I didn't even have to drive my car to the service center. Ben was coming back from a delivery trip south of me with an empty trailer and swung by my place on the way back to the service center to pick-up my car. Great service!
