    Hi
I was in the wait for AP 2.0 announcement camp and had requested DS to delay the delivery to January 2017. My order was placed on June 28th 2016.

I received the upgrade to enhanced AP mail and upon upgrading I happen to land on my tesla page and noticed that it says my tesla is in production queue.

Question is, does it remain in production queue till I confirm a delivery month, or does it mean it will soon start getting built and there has been an error on their end? I do not see a VIN though.

All "in production queue" means is your order was confirmed and the deposit is locked in. It doesn't mean that a build date has been set or the factory is doing anything with it yet. Your delivery specialist will be able to tell you the most precise status.

Also, if you want a 2017 VIN, you need to specifically ask for the car to be built in Jan or later, not delivered in Jan. Many Jan delivered cars will be built in 2016 with a 2016 VIN.

If you were waiting for AP 2.0, why not tell them to build now? A car ordered now will arrive in Dec and you can get your $7,500 credit a year earlier.

I'm assuming that the reason you are worried about this is that you want a "2017" Tesla, and not a "2016". Is that the main reason for concern?

You don't get to "confirm a delivery month" past the date you have requested. (I don't think they let you delay an order more than 6 months from the date it was placed.) But just because you requested a January delivery doesn't mean Tesla can't make your car earlier than that. Then they would say hey, your car is ready now do you want to take delivery now, or should we just park it until January?

I can think of a couple reasons that might happen:
    • They have more production capacity than they have orders. So they just start filling orders early rather than slow the lines down or build excess inventory cars.
    • Someone that had configured a car very similarly, or exactly, like you cancelled so Tesla re-assigned that in-process car to you.

thanks @MP3Mike @gearchruncher @timf for the helpful responses. knowing being in production queue is just an indication that things are on stand by is helpful. Also same was confirmed by my DS today.

I should have clarified am heading out of country for a month in November and renewing my visa. Having a brand new X sitting in garage for a month isn't ideal thus I wanted to get it after Christmas, as I had assumed an AP announcement before and of this year.

I spoke with my DS and seems they can try to bump up my order and hope it can get delivered around my desired time frame however I am wondering on the comment made by @MP3Mike, is it worth to get a 2017 VIN vs a 2016 VIN given am so close to the end of year? I know tesla doesn't use model years for its cars but has incremental improvements in the car going in all the time. But perhaps resale value gets affected as it still uses the traditional ranking system?
