Nail... in my tire...

Hey y'all,

Well, getting touch with the Tesla folks has been a bit of a challenge. Left messages, tried to email... anyway, I have a nail in one of my tires. about 20K on my car. Do i really need to replace all the tires because I have all wheel drive? Any/all feedback appreciated and thank you in advance!

Unless the nail is in or near the sidewall, just go to your local tyre place and get it plugged and patched.

All tires don’t need to be changed just the ones on the same axle since Tesla’s awd doesn’t have both axles mechanically connected. I’d probably replace all 4 though to keep wear even.

If it's the sidewall, then you will have to change the entire tire unfortunately.

Depending on the wear of the tires, it might be a better idea to change all 4 tires if the other 3 are close to wearing them out.

The "because I have awd" thing applies to ICE cars due to things like damage to the transfer case. Teslas dont have that issue, and if you get a loaner tire from them and your car has 20s, they will happily put 19s on there and tell you its fine ( I even have that in writing from them that its fine).

I think the concern is that you're overworking the diff on the same axle if the circumference is different - which still applies to Teslas. To what extent this is "actually" an issue... I don't know.

Assuming that there is sufficient wear remaining on the other axle, replacing all four now is a waste of money IMO.

When all 4 tires have the same wear a car is more predictable in the way it handles in different conditions. With regular driving this isn’t too much of an issue but when the cars being pushed more it can make a difference.

You could inject this Slime Tube Sealant to Prevent Air Loss from the Sidewall and Provide a Temporary Fix to the Damage.
Would also recommend taking to a Local Tire Expert.

With proper wheel alignment having 4 wheels even wear is a coincidence. That's why you need to rotate tires. Doesn't make any sense to change all 4.
