All it takes is one save and you've made the money up for a detector. I've been saved a couple times at least going pretty quick so I'm happy with the purchase.
That is pretty much my story. I ordered a Blendmount and wiring and it was a pain to get to the connector. I ordered some 5mm Female Spades and that helped. I would recommend using your phones camera and light to help see what you are doing.
I have an Escort Max360C with the magnetic mount that is tight to the mirror. I'm not able to remove it without an allen wrench but that is ok as I'm generally in a safe area.
Wow, that's just bonkers. The police uses LIDAR nowadays, so they would have to aim for you detector box.
Also, aren't all new cars equipped with radars for measuring distance? Will the detector go off when you overtake another car, particularly SUVs?
Lidar isn't used on highways in California. Most use Ka band radar and the great detectors get a signal half a mile or more away. The detectors also filter out radar from cars and non-police sources so false alarms are very rare. If you know how to use the detector, its a great tool to avoid a ticket.
Are you saying you’ve never had a chipper tag you with lidar on any CA freeway/interstate?
My v1 must need service, with them outside of the car aimed backwards or Moto sideways with them targeting.
StellarRat is threadcrapping... I use a Uniden R3 and there’s nothing obsolete about it. My longest detection so far was about 3 miles straight ahead along a highway on K-band. Laser usage is heavily dependent on what part of the country you’re driving in, most common way to detect it is scattered off of the cars ahead of you.
If you want better information, don’t look for it here on TMC. There’s a lot of people like StellarRat who have axes to grind, they assume that everyone with a radar detector is somehow an evil criminal.
For what it’s worth, I got my first one when I was driving my MINI, which I had a tendency to over accelerate with. I’m not a serial speeder, I just wanted a reminder to check my speed on the highway because velocitation would set in and it really didn’t seem like I was going too fast... not a problem when driving autopilot in a Tesla. I installed it in my car because I already had this thing and I may as well use it. Plus,I like the extra sense of awareness that it gives me about what’s going on around me.

I've seen it but its really rare in So-cal. Motorcycle cops may do it on the carpool lane with a lidar gun but the VAST majority of tickets i've seen are where they get you with a patrol car using Ka. I've seen lidar on surface streets far more but I don't tend to speed on surface streets nearly as much.
I also have an R3 and it has saved me multiple times. I too am not a crazy speeder but even if you are doing 5 over the limit and flowing with traffic around you, you could get picked out. I hear you on the MINI, I had a last model year supercharged one and it takes a bit of discipline to drive within speed limit.
I do find it odd for some people to post on a thread about wiring radar detectors to say negative things about radar detectors - why? Similar to the threads on lowering your car and the odd person posting why it's such a bad idea and if anything add height for clearance.

Yet most police, at least where i live, do not use radar. They use laser and by the time it beeps to alert you, its too late. LOL Cali cycle police are very good at catching you with the laser.

He's obviously someone that doesn't use a radar detector. Otherwise they would know that 90% of the time the police use radar because it is easier for them. My radar detector has saved me soooo many times. Radar is more versatile for them, it can be used while they are driving around.
Whats really helpful is that you get that 1 hint of Ka and you just know there is a cop around somewhere...just waiting. You just mosey around the speed limit for a couple miles and you are golden. I love my detector. Also, definitely get the detectors now with arrows as they are also really helpful.
I have no "ax to grind." I used a radar detector for many years, but it's useless now. Where I live the police don't use radar anymore, it's all lasers. Hence, radar detectors are obsolete IMO. If there was a reliable laser detector I might even consider getting one. But, I think the laws of physics pretty much preclude that. It would probably only work if someone ahead of you got hit first. I think networked reporting of speed traps and keeping a sharp lookout is your best defense now OR you could just use the warning chimes in the Tesla and stay at the speed limit.
Many stationary speed traps use laser guns which are very difficult to protect yourself against however non-stationary speed enforcement does still use dash-mounted radar speed detection. So yes, radar detectors may be obsolete for many stationary speed enforcement scenarios but not obsolete for non-stationary. Perhaps depending on where you live, the use of radar based speed enforcement is not as common as other areas but in North America as a whole, radar based speed enforcement still gets used. Companies like Stalker still produce and sell radar-based law enforcement systems so even based on that I believe radar detectors are not obsolete - at least for now. At the end of the day, it would appear there are lots of people that can assert to the fact they have recently caught a police radar signal with their detectors so the technology can and does still apply but obviously not in every scenario.
For LIDAR you need to use a jamming system (https://www.alpriority.com/). I had a AL Priority LIDAR jammer on my Audi for years and it saved me numerous unwanted run-ins with LEOs.
Ideally, you should run a good radar detector (vast majority of jurisdictions use radar due to the high cost of LIDAR); a LIDAR jammer (at least protect the front, but rear protection is a decent idea as well), Waze, and most importantly stay aware of your surroundings (important for a lot of reasons if you are living at or near the triples).
Unfortunately, I don't see an easy way to put the AL Priority system into a M3 due to the design of the front. The model S and X seem fairly easy though. If anyone has experience installing a LIDAR jammer in a model 3 I would love to chat. The inability to mount one was my only disappointment when I placed my order (still awaiting delivery).
