NINE days from order to delivery - holy cow

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I ordered my Model 3 last week on 11/21, I figured I'd have a few weeks to get ready with the financing, installation the 240v outlet, etc. Just got a text from Tesla and an update on the website - delivery date is THIS FRIDAY, I'm so excited :) Now I have to make a lot of phone calls to get everything done by then. Just wanted to share.

This is on Long Island, NY by the way.

It all depends on what configuration got produced recently and managed to get shipped as unsold inventory to the east coast (meaning not specifically ordered). Good to hear so many latecomers are able to get a car before 2019.

When I went in, they told me that if I order by 11/30 they were guaranteeing delivery by the end of the year.

You got yours before I get mine :(

Congrats though!

Been a little more than 9 days since I ordered in June.

Ugh that sucks. Did you order the gold-plated model?

Hello Everyone,

First post here. 10 Year BMW owner here switching to a Model 3 Performance. Still keeping a BMW for my wife in the form of an X3M40i. Pretty active poster on a couple of large BMW boards, and looking forward to participating here!

Anyway, the reason my first post is on THIS thread is because I made the decision to switch to Tesla after my test drive on tuesday 11/28. Ordered a Model 3 performance, Blue with black interior (wanted the white but was scared of long term wear on it), and added Enhanced autopilot. Ordered from Tesla San Diego UTC. I was trying to decide colors and they were telling me cars that were "in stock" that could be matched with me pretty much immediately. White with black, Blue with black, blue with white and grey with white were all available in M3 Performance.

I was concerned on cars that had been "sitting" for a while as I really didnt want a car made during teslas self described "production hell". I decided on Blue / black as above, placed order and deposit on the 11/26.

Got email / text today 11/28 from a delivery specialist trying to schedule delivery for me on 12/04. Thats 7 days from order to scheduled delivery(!). I actually turned down that date, as I need to arrange for turning in my leased BMW, get the Tesla wall charger installed, etc.

So, at least for me, This is much like buying any other car. My BMWs were ordered 3 years ago, and wifes X5 took about 6 weeks, while my 435 took almost 3 months.

Sorry for piggybacking on your thread OP, just was really surprised on the turn around. I was just hoping to get it in time for the full rebate.

When I ordered/configured my car on September 28th, I received a call from a Tesla delivery specialist less than 4 hours after my order was submitted stating they had a car matching my configuration available at the San Diego delivery center ready for pickup later that night. I think they were pushing to deliver by the end of the month to increase end-of-quarter delivery numbers which ended that weekend. In the end I turned them down since I hadn't had my loan in place or my charging plug installed. I figured I had 2 months to figure it out... not four hours! ;) Luckily I was able to pickup another matching one a few weeks later in mid October.

Anyway, sounds like my potential 4 hour delivery is close to a record.

Hey jjrandorin,

Congrats on the order. FWIW I was at the UTC store test driving yesterday and looking at their 'inventory' cars as well. I also was concerned about picking up a 'stale' vehicle while looking at the LR RWD variants they had 'off book'. Your SA can look up the build date-for me the White/Black LR RWD rolled off the factory floor on 11/20-so just nine days prior to showing as inventory sitting in Costa Mesa. Worry averted. But zero of the 'inventory' cars had any discount.

For posterity, Tesla slides silent improvements into the build process constantly so in general you want the freshest vehicle available.

-Cheers.

Hi!

Thanks (and congrats to you too)! I ended up getting the "birthday" date from my Advisor, and I was pretty straight forward that I wanted a "new" car not one that had been sitting. The "birthday" date was in tesla's internal system and he showed it to me. It had a date of 11/28. That confused me a bit because I was like "how could the car have been born on 11/28 and be available for sale in burbank the same day?

The salesperson (or whatever tesla calls them.. owner advisor?) told me that the internal "birthday" date is the time the car can be sold, so its considered the date the car was created. My particular car had a "birthday" time of 1:37pm (so car born 11/28 at 1:37) and they matched me to it as soon as it was available.

I have been really pleased with my owner advisor and tesla so far, after being a bit apprehensive given what I am used to from BMW and what I read here. My Owner advisor was very knowledgable, friendly, and even more important, very responsive. My car was scheduled for delivery in costa mesa, and I live in Temecula, so he even got it moved to miramar which is better traffic wise. This is all within the time from first visit and order on 11/27, to vin assigned, and scheduled delivery for 12/4 confirmed, so tight turn around.

Mine is blue / black (wanted white which was STUNNING but I didnt think it would hold up over time), and planning on chrome delete at a wrap place.
