I'm looking at an S.

My local showroom has a P85D (which I drove) and didn't have a 70D (or 85D) that I could drive.

I'm traveling nearby to a customer location, and another showroom near where I'll be has a 70D. It would be convenient and timely for me to go check it out. I could also wait for my local showroom to get a 70D, but they didn't know when.

So what's the protocol? Am I doing something "wrong" to go to the other location to drive the 70D?

I'll admit I don't fully understand the sales model as compared to the traditional car sales model. Your thoughts?

Thanks.

I waited and waited as the Charlotte Showroom opening date got pushed back a couple times and I wanted a test drive. Finally, I happened to be in South Florida and on a whim, my family and I sent an email to the online sales team and they told me to head over to either the Boca Raton or Dania Beach location whenever I wanted and I got a great test drive at the Boca Raton location. Although it was not required, a couple months later when I was ready to buy, I did my order through the rep who gave me the test drive in Boca Raton. Great experience. Ironic timing -- I bought my car on a Friday and the following Monday, the Charlotte Showroom opened their doors. I have received nothing but top-notch support from the Charlotte Showroom and Service Center even though I didn't buy my car through their location. So no worries, Tesla will treat you right regardless of which location (or online) you buy your car through.

Nothing wrong at all, they also don't expect you to buy on the spot.

My owner adviser told me I can purchase online or in the store, whatever made me feel more comfortable. And she also tried to talk me out of several options I was considering.

Basically the polar opposite of the "traditional" dealership model.

Go wherever you want and drive whatever you want. It's your $.

Find me a CPO P85D, and I'll sell your my S85 ;)

I LOVE MY S85, seriously LOVE it... and it's because I love it, that I want... MORE POWER! 0-60 in 5.4 is FAST, but it's not insane :-D

My initial contact was in Tysons Corner. I took my test drives out of Bethesda. I got my followup sales call from DC. I ordered online. I took delivery in Rockville. They don't care, it's all Tesla. Don't think of it like a car dealership, think of it like an Apple store. If you visit multiple Apple stores, there's no problem, because it's all the same in the end.

Thanks. I checked out the 70D, and I'm glad I did. I also get the distinct sense the sales model is different.

The 70D is very good in every way. I don't see buying it though. It's between the extra performance and range of the 85D or the P85D.

While the showroom product specialists are not on commission per se, they do receive credit of some sort for sales through their store.

They're not salespeople, they're .. Advisors?

You can see related titles at Careers | Tesla Motors under "Sales".

Delivery Coordinator
Delivery Experience Specialist
Delivery Operations Specialist
Delivery Orientation Specialist
Owner Advisor
Product Specialist

IIRC, I've mostly interacted with the two underlined w/r/t test drives, purchasing, configuration, and delivery questions.

When I was ready to order I went ahead and went back to the store because it's close and I assumed having 'business' through the store helps them justify the location, so I wanted to support that. When I gave my address, it turns out that I live 5 houses from his parents, and the house he grew up in. Small world and really made me glad I took the time to go in the store!

While I agree with this, I just want to share that this is possible even with online orders. When you submit the order and get your RN, you can then contact your preferred Owner Advisor and they can credit themselves on the order.

The other showroom I stopped in had maybe 50 Tesla's (new, CPO, in for service, etc.). I got to see in person every exterior color and every interior. I sat in both seats. Much better than having a single car and having to extrapolate.

I'm happy I took the time to look around.

While I was at the showroom, the OA told me even if I order online, she'll see it in the system and get notified. I ordered a few days later online, and I received an email from my OA within a few hours.

I'm not sure you need to do anything at all...

That makes sense. They likely have you "attached" to them and if you order shortly thereafter, it will automatically link your order to them. For me, the events were 3 months apart and the OA in FL while I'm in NC, so it took manual action. But generally speaking, I expect it to work as Max experienced.

From my understanding, bonuses are paid out based on the number of cars sold by location (not based on options selected / margin of vehicle). I'd imagine Tesla has some sort of CRM system that ties the prospect to a store and/or adviser so, once you're input into the system, any future order (online at home or at the store) will be credited accordingly.

I worked with the team at the Chicago store and ended up taking delivery in Highland Park. As others have said, don't worry about it and do what's most convenient for you.

I have driven both the 70D and P85D. and I ordered the 85D. For the additional $10k, I figured I was getting additional range, additional performance, piece of mind (range anxiety), and reduced SC charging time. I went for the 85D.

Having said that and having the P85D for about 24 hours for a very fun birthday evening and morning, the insane mode can actually get a little old after you do it about 50 times. I know that might be hard to believe, but . . . Also I have heard the 0-60 time of the P85D in sport acceleration mode (not insane) is about the equivalent of the 85D. Plenty fast for me.

Best of luck on your decision. Take your time, research it to death, and you will be happy you did once it's ordered and confirmed. cs

Just wanted to mention that with my previous experiences buying an ICE through the traditional car sales model, I have no problem nor guilt going to different dealers. Whoever gets me my car at my price gets my money.

As for my Tesla experience, my owner adviser wanted me to see the options I wanted in a car before I ordered. She was more than happy to set up an appointment for me at a different location, or even bring the car with some of the options I wanted to see to her location. Very satisfied, and she gets the credit for selling me the car.
