That is a bummer but seemingly common. I see them coming through auction sometimes with an "upgraded" model code on, so now I know where they get them. Usually you can tell by a vin check but worse one I saw was a friend purchase a 60D salvage auction but they had turned the 6 upside down and he ended up paying 10k more for it. Anyway...
