Should I be upset about receiving a 2018 car?

I ordered my M 3 today. 2 week delivery. I fully expect the vin to be 2019. If you guys think otherwise I’d sure like to hear from you.
Many thanks.

Probably depends on the specs. I ordered a MR Blue/Aero and got a vin next day, but it is a 2018 VIN. I don't care, so long as the build quality and battery are good. I haven't heard from the adviser yet, but plan to get a build date from him/her.

EDIT: Based on build sequence I'd bet it's a late December vehicle (higher series number than any other Blue MR in the deliveries spreadsheet, the last of which were delivered in mid to late December).

Ordered the M3 (mid-range black/black) on Feb. 28th - someone contacted me right away with a VIN - they were super quick to set me up and schedule a March 6th delivery. But then, as soon as I asked a few questions - not one call back - not one response email. Found out it was a November 2018 build that has been sitting outdoors in Ohio for the past month or so (through ice storms, salted parking lots, etc). Was told it had only 11 miles on it by a sales rep, so I decided I was going to just accept it. Then today I got my purchase agreement and it says 68 miles on it. Didn't care so much about the 2018 build, but did care that they lied and said it was never driven.

Several questions later, they said it is listed as a demo car. So now waiting for a 2019. Been waiting since my preorder in 2016, like a lot of others I'm sure, so what is a few more weeks...

Not a big deal, just sharing my experience so far.

Unfortunate experience so far. I hope it resolves itself, I know how it feels. Tesla messed up my profile pretty bad that I've been waiting for 8+ months after placing an order. So, what's a few more weeks :p

Anyone get any resolution and have a 2019 VIN assigned?

My process related question from earlier is because a Tesla chat rep told me that I could order today and tell my Delivery Specialist that I didn't want delivery until June. Just weighing whether to do that or not based on what is going on with others...

Was that the method that they told you to use to get a 2019 model?

No no.. I think if you want that, you just ask for 2019 model.

For me, I want to take delivery before June 30th incentive deadlines (federal drop from $3750 to $1825 and PA rebate currently only active through June 30th as well)... buuut, I have my 328xi lease that goes through September. So I just want to limit the time with 2 car payments.

Ordered on 1/5/19. Delivered on 1/12/19. It’s a 2018. Pretty much what I would have expected and really, who buys a car thinking about resale? (some)Tesla owners seem to look around for something to be pissed off about. I’m delighted by the car and stuff like the spoiler being AWOL, price drops after I purchased etc are understandable growing pains that come with buying an amazing, groundbreaking car from a new car company trying to do things different, imho

"who buys a car thinking about resale" - Reasonable people who don't have FU money.
While Tesla claims that their cars are not attached to a model year, please go and have a look at their used inventory. The filters you get to narrow down your search has an option "Production Year".
Moreover - a 2015 Model S 85D with only 26k miles is listed for $49k, while a 2016 Model S 85 D (completely identical - same color/ features/ interior) is listed for $52k - That's a $3k difference - solely based on the "Production year" - here you go for reference.

I am glad you love your car and don't mind taking delivery of a 2018 produced vehicle, but most people who have counted dollars and saved to buy a $60k car would like to get the most bang out of their buck!

How did I not get the most bang for my buck? I purchased a car I thought was worth the money I paid for it. The only reason model year makes any difference is because of resale. I’ve purchased enough cars over the years to be familiar with depreciation. I never buy a car I think I won’t keep for 5-6 yrs so I just don’t get worried about depreciation. Ymmv.

There is no one correct or incorrect reason for wanting a 2019 model, so theres no need to ''argue' about this. It is absolutely true that the model year affects resale value and if that's a reason to wait, and you're willing to wait, it's fine.

For me personally, it's about build quality based on the assumption that Tesla gets better over time, combined with not wanting a cold lot sitting car on summer tires (there is an article about this actually voiding tire warranty, in addition to tire damage). I also just want a car for how long they made me wait due to some 'issues' in their system. I was assigned a 2018 inventory P3D in February, but it feels off since there was no reason for that to be an inventory vehicle when there was someone with that exact configuration waiting for it in November. That's just my experience, and obviously everyone's will be different.

Just to share my experience—I ordered an AWD M3 last Thursday post-announcement, didn’t hear from Tesla so called them Sunday just to check in. They said “oh you already have a VIN” (it still isn’t reflected in my account), and emailed it to me. The VIN is a ‘18 build, so I expected to ask for a discount or upgrade when I spoke with the Delivery guy today. Before I even spoke he said, “Scratch that VIN the guy gave you yesterday, we were able to get you a ‘19 build.”

So basically I’m happy, but it sounds like it’s anyones guess what you’ll get mates up with.
I just bought a LR RWD, the car they offered me was built in 4/2018. The Tesla rep says that they've stopped building the RWD and that my only option is the older car.

Almost a year old car? This car ought to be with some miles on it or have spent its life in a service center after someone refused delivery for something that took months to repair...

As to 2019 VINs, my car was ordered Feb 1, a 2018 was first offered but refused (11.6 miles but did not say new) and got delivery on Feb 19 of a 2019 LR AWD. Car they told me was built beginning of January. It is a separate story that just days later after delivery car got much cheaper and that the AWD is the only car without any speed improvement with the latest announcement.

Took delivery of my LR RWD yesterday. It's a 2018 November build 123xxx. What gave me some perspective is that I looked up the build date of my previous car, which was also the most reliable car I've ever owned, which was February. I didn't take delivery of that car until August so that car sat around for 6 months with no problems.

Interestingly, my 3 was sold as new but had 47 miles on the odometer. Looking at the car I'd never know it as there were no imperfections other than maybe some panel alignments that I'm not even going to worry about. It's a great car.

Ok, looking for your thoughts:

Ordered a Model 3 LR AWD on Monday, 3/11. Have been speaking with a Tesla rep for the last few days. Today he found a test drive/demo car with 562 miles and my configuration (no variation at all). It is a late Dec 2018 build. It was not rejected or returned, but I assume that with that many miles, it might have been used as a loaner since I cannot believe it could have had test drives resulting in 562 miles. Never titled, so new and available for the tax credit for the first half of 2019. I'm not in a rush to get a new car ASAP, but this would fit the bill.

The Tesla rep said he would confirm that it will have updated software including AP & FSD (which I purchased upon order).

Do I buy it? Appreciate your thoughts.

I would but I’d have to go over it with a fine tooth comb and maybe bring a mechanic with me. And absolutely ask for a discount maybe on Auto pilot. No discount I wouldn’t buy it.
