Netting it all out, looks like Starlink is firing on all thrusters.

I expect that still means that people need to get the dishes in the country. I'm not sure how this would work. Even if the government does not allow the system someone can bring a dish into the country and activate it?

Could this be happening in Russia? Or China?
Yep. I recall Elon Tweeting about that previously, but can't find it now.
He does confirm that stance in the above thread:

Even if SpaceX receives US government permission to activate Starlink in Iran, the Iranian government is not going to allow Starlink dishes into the country. They would have to be smuggled in, and then anyone who uses one will risk imprisonment. And they are not easy to conceal…

Report in ars technica Starlink is getting a lot slower as more people use it, speed tests show

Starlink may be taking on too many new customers.
Hummm
The data is from Ookla speed tests which combines all versions of Starlink. I'm in a waitlist area in SE Michigan, to even get Starlink at this point I had to buy the RV version (kept residential order to save my spot). As an RV user, I have 'best effort' serivce quality. That will bring down the speed average but says nothing about what official residential customers are getting.

Plus, there is the issue that the speed test results may be hampered by user equipment / setup. Note, it's raining here, but I did each group of tests sequentially.
With Ookla web test: Using 5GHz to a mesh router to Starlink I get (again RV version) 26-50 Mbps. Using 2.4 to Starlink directly, I get 15-25 Mbps.
Using the Starlink speed test it's 53 down 10 up on 5GHz mesh vs 21/10 on direct 2.4GHz.

Standing next to Starlink router:
2.4 GHz
Ookla 62 down
Starlink 39 down 19 up
5 GHz
Ookla 78 down
Starlink 58 down 8.3 up

Also have tests from this morning hitting over 100 download.

Further, of course it will get slower if user base grows with the same constellation size (total bandwidth), but that doesn't mean it's slow.
However, Starlink still reached a median download speed of at least 60Mbps in North America during Q2 2022, which is more than enough for at least one connected device to do most everything on the Internet including streaming video, downloading games, and chatting on video with friends and family.
More satellites, more ground stations, and laser links will help in the near time frame, Starlink V2 will boost bandwidth in the longer term.

In parts of the US and Canada, elsewhere they have lots of capacity. And “too many” is relative. Even in congested areas it works better for a lot of people than what they had before. Basically, the market will sort itself out. Eventually only those that really need it will stick with it in overloaded sections. Meanwhile SpaceX is lofting 50 or so new satellites a week, so they are doing their upmost best.

Yes, but that’s par for the course in such countries. There are many things that are smuggled in, TV dishes for example. The state isn’t all powerful, and seemingly, getting less powerful by the day there.

Actually, the Ukranians have shown us they are pretty easy to conceal. A mesh net over one is sufficient to hide it from view, without being thick enough to impact performance.

And smuggling things into Iran . . . not as hard as one might imagine.

I have had Starlink Residential since 4/2022 my speeds were averaging between 20-60 download until recently hit 100 in the early AM. For my use case Starlink is good enough mostly for work and tv streaming. People get too caught up in speed and say “ but Elon Musk promised 300 download speeds” and want to quit the service. If I had legit other options I probably wouldn’t have Starlink

I see a lot of variation, but this is typical for me in rural Idaho. Sometimes I'll see >300 downloads, sometimes <100. Depends because the satellites are always moving. I have no options that are even close, and those are data limited.

These are great speeds. I was using 30/5 WISP before we got our fiber installed, so I would have loved Starlink.
