So the new "steering wheel" is actually just a handle to hold on to while your thumbs do all the work.

My reading on this is that he is referring to AP as the real steering system and just being snarky, like the "You won't care" comment.
Did he change his mind or do we have one more little surprise?

This is something I've considered... I mean when you look at the Model 3 drawing it has a steering wheel ...err steering controls that look like a yoke you'd find on a plane or a sci-fi spaceship. It's very polarizing though and probably not for everyone. It would be interesting if this was an optional item.
To me they just look like thumb wheels that rock side to side and push in when looking at the contrast adjusted pics in this post:

They're not track balls or scroll wheels. They're clearly direct retinal projectors, you know, for the HUD
no buttons on a steering wheel seem weird. I'm not sure how those trackballs will interact with teslas menu interface. Doesn't seem to mix all that well as they aren't very linear.
