I have to say it is quite surprising for a company to ask people to pay ANY amount for a product almost sigh unseen... much less the massively premium price of the X. I hope it doesnt blow up in there face

Well, this is their third go around at this approach. First round was Roadster, second was the Model S. X makes it three. Since it's now a proven method, I don't think there's any need to hope about it not blowing up in their face - it won't, it works. Model 3 is expected to work the same way and there are a large number of people waiting for that reservation list to open. Loads of people.
 
Yeah, well, I'm just a bit annoyed that the Model X "reveal" didn't include these kinds of details. Is there even a Tesla product management person, let alone a department? For the reveal, there should have been available, at the very least internally, a very detailed sheet that lists all the little details about the car. Storage pockets, frunk dimension, number and location of USB charge ports, cup holder locations, second row seat ventilation, etc. I mean, I just talked to Tesla sales in their HQ yesterday to an actual Model X specialist and he couldn't answer a few questions I had. VERY LAME.

Details, details, I'm sure all details will be in the owners manual when it comes out.

The forum answers a lot of these questions by looking at the photos others have taken. I remember seeing two USB ports facing the second row seats under the A/C vents that are part of the driver's armrest. One of the ports inside the driver's console was connected with a wire, so only one USB remained. The cellular phone dock exists in the driver's console. Cup holders are at the rear seats and in the driver's arm rest. The Signature X has the drivers console with two additional cup holders. Just as in Model S, there are A/C vents in the driver's armrest. Vents at the side windows were noted, but I do not have the specifics. Hopefully others can fill in the details.

When talking to the Inside Sales Advisor today, she mentioned that the advisors enjoyed riding and driving Model X at some point after the Launch Event. That should help them answer some of the questions. One report was that a 6' 2" advisor sat in the third row and had adequate head room. Others on the forum have reported a 5' 11" maximum for the center seat in the second row.

This happens all the time when builders sell the first release of their homes before the models are completed. You just buy off of the marketing floor plans, not even the architectural drawings which they don't share. That's what my wife and I did. I'm happy we were an "early adopter", too, since the price increased approx. 50% by the time they did the final release of homes almost 3 years later...

The only thing that is going to "blow up" for Tesla with the X is demand for the car. It's already in the tens of thousands (even with the cancellations because of non-folding 2nd row seats) and it will continue to grow as more people hear about the car from friends, and when X demo cars hit the showrooms, and more complete reviews are published. Right now only a small fraction of potential buyers are even vaguely aware of the car.
Demand will grow over time, just like it did with the S. Remember, Tesla does absolutely no conventional advertising. They don't need to. That is unprecedented. The cars sell themselves. And over three years after the launch of the S, there is still no directly comparable competition. If you want a long range BEV -- and clearly thousands of people do -- then your only choice is Tesla.

In addition to the comments others have made, I'll add that there's nothing "massively premium" about the price of the X. The $130,000-and-up prices you've seen bandied about are only the price of the first 1,000 cars, which are fully-loaded "Signature" editions. The production car will start at around $75,000 and go to $140,000 if you keep adding options... which is exactly where BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Land Rover, and Audi price their cars. Go price out a Cayenne or a Land Rover, they're easily $90,000 to $100,000.

This car is not competing with a Honda Odyssey minivan, or a Nissan Pathfinder. If you compare against its real competition, it's not expensive at all.

I think Tesla is in a different atmosphere now than when the MS was introduced. With the 'vast' amount of showrooms around now, many more people will be exposed to the MX. Big problem ahead is going to be meeting demand.
I come in contact with thousands of people from all over the country (and world). There are a few that have never heard of Tesla (I know - hard to believe). Quite a few that have never seen a Tesla. But being here in Northern Calif, I can just point at one and listen to the praises and then barrage of questions.

And yet, I still wish I could meet that elderly gentleman (2 years ago?) that after overhearing the conversation jumped in a said vehemently "It will fail - don't put your money in that stock - you'll be throwing it away. No one wants an electric car!!"

Well, if you're buying a Model X, it's obvious that you already have the class, therefore you're not "buying above it". :)

That being said, you should feel better about your purchase based on my comments: the X costs a lot of money, but it's a good value for your buck and it's not expensive for it's category.
 
Their might be another reason that they are tight lipped about the final specifications of the production models.

I have worked with many engineers on projects, and many times they work furiously to get additional improvements and capabilities done in time to make it into initial production. They might even have the project finished, but still testing and integration must be done by others to make the final deadline (often extended to fit in just one more development).

It is not until then entire project coelesses that the final specifications are locked into place. Gotta give these guys a little breathing room to make the best product they can.

Items that do not make the cut are often continued to be refined, and integrated as running changes to work their way into later production runs.

This way Tesla will continously improve their vehicles and always be producing the best that is possible on any given day.
