Good choice. Hopefully will wind up vastly improving Tesla sales in Germany itself. Made-in-Germany American cars for Germans. After all, we already have Made-in-America German BMWs/Mercedes/Audis/VWs for Americans.

Only loser, in the long term? Glovis. Fine w/ me!

A facility near Berlin makes all kinds of sense. The EU has a population of 513 million and a strong commitment to electric vehicles. Scandinavia, the middle east and non-EU eastern European countries are close by. The Euro is not as expensive as the US dollar so products made in the EU will be significantly cheaper than American built cars. Production outside the US is not as vulnerable to the vagaries of current US trade policy and the generally destabilizing action of the US administration with respect to international trade.

An R&D facility will allow Tesla to tap into the pool of experienced German automotive designers and engineers. A European presence should result in products better adapted to the needs of customers in the EU. Perhaps a smaller, less expensive Tesla will come from a European design group.

I thought I saw somewhere (in the initial flurry of articles) that they were going to try to beat or at least match the China build out.
There is a lot of bureaucracy in Gremany...

People start commenting that the 2021 Giga4 factory will be completed before BER, the future Berlin Brandenburg airport.

Note: The initial 2012 BER opening ceremony was cancelled due to a fault with the fire alarms...

Tesla forced to pause Berlin Gigafactory after environmental challenge
"A German court has forced Tesla to temporarily halt preparation work for its Gigafactory near Berlin after local activists raised concerns about its impact on wildlife and water supplies, Reuters reports. The electric car company is currently in the process of clearing 92 hectares of forest in Gruenheide, east of Berlin, where it hopes to build its first European Gigafactory."

"Problem for Tesla is that you can’t cut trees after february, so the project would be delayed by 6 months if the decision is not made within the next week."
