"There will be no price increase to the $35,000 Model 3. The price increases will only apply to the more expensive variants of Model 3, as well as Model S and X."

Is this to be interpreted as that anything above SR Model 3 gets the 3% increase or as the more expensive Model 3s gets the increase, while the less expensive, including SR, SR+, (maybe MR?) doesn't get the increase?

My thinking is that they should not raise the price of the SR+, unless demand is indeed through the roof (as @Papafox suggests). SR+ w/Autopilot option seems to be the best deal and will also generate good margins and volume for Tesla.

Tesla "we'are closing stores". TMC: brilliant
Tesla "We'are not closing stores" TMC: "Outstanding move"

  • Tesla: "We are closing most of our stores and are converting the rest to showrooms".
  • After 1,000 comments on the topic TMC consensus is split between "long overdue", "risky but might work" and "bad idea".
  • Tesla: "We are keeping the better half of our stores and want to convert most of them to showrooms, contingent on performance."
  • Trolls: "Tesla is 100% reversing their decision!!!"
  • Immediate, unambiguous TMC consensus: "LOL, the TSLAQ folks are really bad at math."

Couldn’t be more clear. Only the $35000 Model 3 will stay the same. Nothing to speculate.

Hard to avoid the conclusion that the original decision was only half way thought through. Looks like this is one to chalk up to: "we aspire to be less dumb over time".

To achieve these prices while remaining financially sustainable, Tesla is shifting sales worldwide to online only… Shifting all sales online, combined with other ongoing cost efficiencies, will enable us to lower all vehicle prices by about 6% on average, allowing us to achieve the $35,000 Model 3 price point earlier than we expected. Over the next few months, we will be winding down many of our stores, with a small number of stores in high-traffic locations remaining as galleries, showcases and Tesla information centers.

Over the past two weeks we have been closely evaluating every single Tesla retail location, and we have decided to keep significantly more stores open than previously announced as we continue to evaluate them over the course of several months… A few stores in high visibility locations that were closed due to low throughput will be reopened, but with a smaller Tesla crew. In addition, there are another 20% of locations that are under review, and depending on their effectiveness over the next few months, some will be closed and some will remain open.

Oooff, why didn't they evaluate the store situation properly BEFORE announcing drastical changes?

I support their change of mind but it doesn't look professional at all. Completely unnecessary drama.

Elon doesn't operate by focus group/consultants.

Elon makes a move and waits for pushback.

Is price too high for dual motor? autopilot? full self drive?

Will people stop ordering if we remove leather option?

No gauge cluster? etc

There is good and bad to Musk Modus Operandi .

EV Sales: France February 2019

Interesting that Elon has just said ok to a *new* store in Perth. It’s worth checking out Perth on the map to get a feel for the geography.

It’s kind of like an Island, except bound by desert instead of water. It will be a long time before east and west coasts are joined to form a single supercharger Network. It’s much cheaper to fly, and there’s not a lot between.

I could be wrong. Maybe people will drive the Nullarbor now, because it’s there, because they can, because an EV makes it fun and affordable. A bit like climbing Kilimanjaro.

Firstly, how do you evaluate customer reaction, without telling customers? Methodologies with focus groups and backwards looking statistics to estimate purchase behavior for high value products are not very reliable. There could be a lot of people waiting on the sidelines who've discovered they really wanted to book a test drive, after the store closures were announced.

I suspect Tesla saw significantly increased foot traffic and walk-in purchases last week.

Tesla is now pivoting/backtracking towards an Apple Stores showroom model - where sales staff doesn't earn a sales commissions.

Secondly, Tesla isn't the NSA, they are a high-tech meritocracy with a flat management hierarchy and an explicit policy to break the "chain of command" whenever necessary. A planned decision affecting thousands of employees would leak almost immediately, unless it's planned just by a very small group - but the risk of a small group getting it wrong is higher.

Both of these problems can be counteracted to a certain extent by being flexible, adaptable and not trying to "save face" if they guessed wrong.

I support their change of mind but it doesn't look professional at all. Completely unnecessary drama.

About demand in europe.
Do you guys remember the crowdsourced excel sheet of european orders.

Tesla Model 3: Europa Bestellungen/Europe Orders

See that only Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland have been updated recently in March.
A lot of other countries have not been updated lately. I think that is because not a lot of new customers know about this sheet.

When the dutch number got updated last week it doubled!

So I expect these number to be much more then this sheet shows.

As these are only P and Dual LR demand in europe seems really good!
