Does anyone know which VINs were lost in the most recent fire at Gruber?

Pete said he’d reached out to all those whose cars had burned, as well as those with cars onsite; don’t know if he’s reached out to PEM owners or those with other components on-site - I’m assuming each burnt-up PEMs will be a bricked roadster eventually.

So far I’ve seen the following -

Destroyed:
265 (via owner’s Facebook)
516 (via owner’s Twitter)
540 (via owner’s Facebook)
1216 (via owner’s Facebook)

Were on-site; status unknown
227 (via owner’s Twitter)
423
1196 (via owner on TMC)

Off-site / Survived:
100 (via owner’s Facebook)

Other:
Three Megapole boards (via Medlock’s FB)

Destroyed in 2017 fire (via TEG, first page of this thread):
715
948
1153
1181
1274
1328

RIP # 227

We will always remember that cold rainy evening of April 14th 2009 when two years of hoping and waiting finally came to an end!

There will never be another car that can take your place in our hearts.

So far, I have confirmed the following as lost -
  • Signature 27 Glacier Blue
  • 227 Twilight Blue
  • 265 Twilight Blue
  • 516 Electric Blue
  • 540 Glacier Blue
  • 545 Twilight Blue
  • 581 Twilight Blue
  • 1125 Fusion Red
  • 1157 Thunder Gray
  • 1196 Thunder Gray
  • 1216 Lightning Green
578 (Arctic White) and 1124, the full carbon Roadster, were some of the Roadsters safe from the fire.

423 (Sterling Silver), 430 (Brilliant Yellow), and 620 (Sterling Silver) were recently on site, along with many others like @TEG mentioned, but unconfirmed. If 430 is gone, that drops us to only 23 remaining Brilliant Yellows for North American production numbers .

While every Roadster is notable in my eyes, the owner of the shop himself owns Signature 5, the first Fusion Red produced, and 1457, the last Electric Blue produced for North America. If both were offsite and unaffected by the fire, I’m afraid I’d be even more suspicious than I am now. If not, we can consider both historic VINs as destroyed.

According to this article Gruber lost 3 himself

“Talking to each of you, I am again reminded how cherished these cars are, how much they meant to you, and what a special place they carve out in automotive history. You all have my sincerest apologies and I feel your pain, having lost three in this mishap as well. I wish it was otherwise.”

Seeing all these in a list like this makes the number lost all the more real.

I've driven mine a LOT this week thinking about all those lost and the owners that will never see their car again.

Lots of blue Roadsters got destroyed it looks like. @TEG does this change much for most/least common Roadster colors out there? I'd be very curious to know

Also, given that Gruber has now had 2 fires, would you trust sending your Roadster to Pete? I'm curious what other owners' thoughts are......

You can scratch #393 & #464 off of the "existing Roadsters" list as well.
#969 visited this summer, but got home a good month before this happened. Quite thankful that we missed this.

I for one would not hesitate one minute taking mine to him for a repair, and will when the time comes and he is back up and running.
Can you elaborate? They are obviously close to you in location. But if they have burned up 40 cars and saved let’s say 200 maybe 300. That’s not great odds. Right?

Removing teams and emotions, shouldn’t they come out with a “full report” of how this happened and follow it up with a comprehensive plan on how it will never ever happen again? Until they do those 2 simple things….I can’t see why owners Roadsters would head to AZ.

My biggest question in all of this is parts scarcity. Parts are already hard to get. Grubers parts supply burned up. You would think a number of repairs are no longer able to be done without parts. Right?

By my rough count, there were 26, maybe 28 cars visible onsite in the Gjeebs video filmed several days before the fire:
4 or 5 Glacier Blue (27, 540, ???, ???, ?)
4 Twilight Blue (227, 545, 581, ???)
4 Arctic White (393, ???, ???, ???)
3 or 4 “Black” (464, ???, ???, ?)
3 Thunder Gray (1157, 1196, ???)
2 Radiant Red (1125?, ???)
1 Fusion Red (1125?)
1 Very Orange (???)
1 Brilliant Yellow (???)
1 Lightning Green (1216)
1 Electric Blue (516)
1 Sterling Silver (423)

Note that the VINs here are just matching up known lost roadsters against their colors; the roadsters seen were not necessarily lost, and some of those lost may not be seen in the video. That said, the color count of the roadsters seen in the video is a superset of the color count of those which are publicly known to be lost.

Again, this is a rough count, and the usual caveats of roadster spotting apply: can’t always tell jet black from obsidian Black from full carbon, White could be Pearl, Sterling Silver could appear Glacier Blue in certain light, etc.

I’ll try to rewatch while marking locations on a floor plan at some point, to see if I can get a more accurate count.

I would suggest someone download and archive the video in high quality, should it be helpful in an insurance investigation.

Vin 1124 was referenced as safe . . . but Jason Hill previously reported here on TMC it was totaled in April 2012. Was 1124 rebuilt?
