Tracking P85D delivery thread

My red P85D is completed so I think I have the fastest build time from starting building on 12/18 to complete today 12/20. I was checking at least twice a day so that is pretty accurate. So who knows I may get a Christmas present instead of New Years. I have a tan interior but won't know which seats until delivery.

Well after 26 days of production + 2 days delivery prep, I finally took delivery at the factory this morning, and now i've already forgotten how long and frustrating the wait was. What an amazing vehicle. I only drove it from the factory to leave it in Orinda for Opti-Coating and some other stuff, but FWIW my main first impressions are pretty consistent with the other early reviews:

  • Even compared to the P85+, that increase in acceleration from a dead stop is just crazy fast. It seemed even much quicker than 3 seconds to go from 0-60. I didn't have a chance to really do any curvy driving yet so will have to test out the handling later.
  • The next Gen Seats (which I only have in in front for now) are a significant improvement. I feel like they grip the body much better and are just plain more comfortable. And although they're not Next Gen, the rear seats do have those higher headrests, but I didn't feel they had a noticeably bothersome affect on rear window visibility.
  • Yep, not much left of the frunk, but still good usable space. A bit of a bummer because we only really used it for our stroller, which I don't think will fit in there anymore, but I expected that.
  • No heated steering wheel..oh well. I am not sure anyone in the Bay Area is getting that anytime soon, if what I've read here is true that there only shipping to colder climates for now.
  • The front motor noise level - well it's there and the overall sound is a little different, but I didn't find it annoying or drastically different than the P85+.
  • One issue - the lane keep assist didn't seem to work correctly. I turned it on, and practiced drifting into other lanes, but I didn't feel any vibration in the wheel (supposedly it's pretty obvious, so pretty sure it wasn't doing it at all). I'm not overly concerned though - I know Tesla will make it right (maybe I just needed to reset the system - didn't have a chance to try that). (Anyone else have this issue? Probably I should search in another thread).

The other cool thing about my delivery was today is that none other than Barry Bonds was there to pick up his P85D too! Say what you want about him, but being a lifelong Giants fan it was pretty crazy to see him there at the factory. Unfortunately he didn't do the tour with us and I never had a chance say hello to him or to ask for a picture. I won't divulge his car's colors here in order to protect the Home Run King's privacy .

Why isn't Tesla scaling up right now? What is the slowest part about the assembly line or where or what is the bottleneck? Are they still supply limited by an item? How are they ever going to turn the line up to 1 car a minute? How about when Model X starts and dilutes or reduces Model S output? Or is it on a totally separate line?

RTZ, This summer Tesla opened a second assembly line, but it has been slower to get sped up than desired. I'm told that two shifts are working at present. During the 3rd Quarter earnings report, Elon Musk identified the need to speed up production while maintaining quality as the biggest challenge before Tesla at this point. Rest assured that Tesla is working furiously to get as many cars completed this quarter as possible, AS LONG AS THE QUALITY IS STILL THERE. Earlier this summer the production line was turning out 800 cars per week, we've heard confirmation of 1,000 cars per week, and I'm hoping the factory is now up to 1200 cars per week. One of the lines is using innovative new approaches, and speeding up such new equipment takes serious tweaking. If you live close to California, take a factory tour and you'll get the picture.

I'm a little bummed that my car is still in the queue. There are still a lot of cars with older order dates on the spreadsheet but there are even more cars that have newer order dates that are in production and even production complete. With 10 days left it's getting less and less likely that I will get it this year. I changed from coil to air suspension to get the car this year. I can not figure out any rime or reason on which cars are being built. It's definitely not just by order date of VIN. I can understand building cars earlier with that are further from the factory so they can also get delivery this year. However, there are Fremont cars with much newer order dates that that have started production.

I asked Tesla to provide the next gen seats free of charge due to the hassles I've faced with the delivery of my P85 and P85D and they declined. So I've cancelled my order. Don't let Tesla cram an incomplete car down your throat. Tell them you don't want it until the seats are ready. If enough people do this, those seats will get done in a hurry. I don't have time to waste making up for Tesla's mistakes. Every visit to the dealer wastes 2 hours and I've probably been in 15 times in my 2 years. As much as it saddens me to not have the P85D, at least I can buy a BMW or Audi that has decent build quality and a service operation that doesn't completely suck. And you can bet they are cutting quality corners cranking these out before the end of the year. Just like 2012.

I am certain that they are sourcing the NG seats as fast as possible, so your order cancellation and encouraging others to do the same is not going to make them materialize any faster.

I don't believe there is any proof that they are cutting corners. The issues in 2012 were an immature product and production process. I have VIN 00463 delivered 4Q12 and Tesla went out of their way to make everything right, including making upgrades to things like ill-fitting trim that I didn't request. My service experience has been exemplary, in Menlo Park, Fremont and Sunnyvale. As good or better than on the 9 BMWs I've owned previously. But you are certainly entitled to your differing opinion.

First post! I picked up my P85D in Fremont, CA yesterday. It was delivered without the next generation seats and they will be available sometime next month.

My last car was a 2013 P85 which I had driven for about 12k miles. My gripe with the P85 was the wishy-washy handling which thankfully is totally gone:

- Everything feels more refined. Sharper screen, tighter seams, more comfortable seats. It's a much more iterated car.
- The acceleration is amazing and addictive
- I averaged 370kwh in Sport mode and 405kwh in Insane mode across about 100 miles of spirited driving
- The high speed handling is amazing and bolted to the ground.
- The much faster acceleration makes the car feel smaller and more agile
- The motor in the front delivers a more satisfying, space-shippy style sound. I like it a lot.
- Personally I find the rear-visibility to be annoying. I don't like having any of my vision blocked. I hope they decide to offer fold-down headrests in the back which I can have installed the same time as the next-gen seats.
- As mentioned by an earlier poster, the Driver's Assistance Lane Departure Warning appears to me to be malfunctioning. I have driven 2 different P85Ds and when I tested it in both cars, I hear the motor make the three chimes, but the motor definitely isn't delivering the feedback where it needs to go.

YESSS. Finally out of the hole!

How on earth did you get a P85D in brown? I have a brown P85 and wanted my P85D to be brown also. I even sendt Jerome a mail begging for a solution that would help me get me this. Sadly he answered this: Thank you for your message and your order for another Model S: we appreciate your continued support!

We have stopped taking 2015 orders for the brown color in early October. Additionally, we have asked all customers who had selected brown for a 2015 delivery to select another color. We are discontinuing the brown paint in our manufacturing system in a few days, so I am afraid we will not be able to accommodate your request. This is also a matter of fairness to all other customers.

Thank you again for your support and your understanding. Best regards,

Well as a life long Braves fan I may have a bone to pick with your Home run King designation, but no argument with your assessment of the car.
As a first time owner there is a lot to learn (figuring out how to get the rearview back after accessing other features was initially baffling). Picked up the car last night and it was the 2nd one to be delivered in Georgia.
It is Gorgeous. Stunning. A total head turner.
The acceleration in either mode is so satisfying. The handling is excellent. If I were to pick any nits I would have preferred selectable steering with the present one being normal and then a tighter Sport level.
Also the same with Regeneration. Would like a maybe 25% increase there either all the time or selectable.
The sound system is way better than I read about here. I come from a Burmeister in Porsche and I ain't looking back.
The car feels smaller than it is. Being able to charge it up at home is F-U-N. The quiet power on demand is real and intoxicating.
It is the best car I have driven even without handy places to put things. I know people say live with the open space to see if you want a console. After living with it for the last 2 hours I want a console.
OK. Off to try to figure out homelink and a Slacker account. That's all for now.

He is taking delivery of a 2014 P85D. Brown is discontinued for 2015.

Congrats, absolutely love the brown! Haven't ordered one and a little bummed out that I won't be able to get brown if/when the time comes. Enjoy, I'm sure it's the last thing on your mind, but PM me if you're ever selling, I'm local.

I like the brown too. Never seen one ever.

I received the request for payment prior to my car going into production. I took care of it before they started making my car.

Is there a thread for celebrity sightings/owners? That might be fun.

I can see you are upset. It is more constructive to tell us about what happened to you - the facts. Some may take offense to you telling us what to do.

Get a horse...

Wow. A Model S with the same seats Tesla has installed in tens of thousands of cars is "incomplete"? And despite multiple posts from new P85D owners saying the build quality is excellent and extremely positive reviews of the car you are canceling your order and buying an ICE even though Tesla will install the Next Generation seats in a few months.

Hehe, yeah, when we got in at around 10:15, saw him in the lobby and did a double take. Confirmed with one of the Tesla employees that it was indeed him; he was apparently picking up his second MS, this time a P85D. Man, he has lost a lot of bulk since his playing days.

About the lane departure warning, my wife tried it a bit on the approach to the Dumbarton bridge yesterday (where the lane markings are reasonably prominent). Yeah, she said she couldn't feel the buzz in the wheel much either except for the vibration from going over the Bott's dots themselves.

I was in Mt. Kisco this morning and saw your car. That's my Benz parked next to your car that I was trading in before picking up the rental Tesla is providing for me. Sam and Peter were great and talking about getting your car to Ithaca tomorrow. Went for a test ride with Peter and am still in awe of the power of the D! My son is still giddy from the experience. Sam walked me through everything I need to know before picking up the car on Tuesday and even showed me where the transporter was in Tennessee!

Your car is in great hands and I'm sure you'll have a very wide Tesla grin tomorrow!

Wow! That's really cool! This is at least the second instance in two days of a forum member here seeing another forum member's car before the forum member takes delivery of it and being able to confirm that with 100% certainty. I was really pleased Sam was able to make things work out for my delivery today. I expect when you heard the two of them talking, they may well have been talking about what a pain I was being! (I really wanted my wife to be able to participate in the delivery!) The car should be here some time late today. I'm sure you're correct about the Tesla grin! Thanks!

Interestingly, I have never set foot in a service center in the 1 year and 3 months I have owned my S85, which I received in 9/2013. I only had a couple of issues, one relatively big and one small, every time I interacted with service, they came and "valet" the car from my office to the SC and back. One time I needed a loaner. The second time they came to my house and fixed it for free (I don't have free ranger service). I would say, in the last 20 years of owning cars (and I have had a lot of them), I have NEVER had a better service experience or overall experience with a car company as I have with Tesla.
Considering this car has only been in existence for only a few years, and with the car being so amazing (even my S85) that there will not be some issues, I expect it, but they handle it so well I don't even have to be worried or bothered about what might go wrong with the car. Also, for me, I completely trust Tesla to replace the seats for me if I don't get them on delivery (but that's my opinion based on my experience with them) --From the accounts of those here who have already received the P85D, it sounds even more amazing, solid, well build etc then previous models even though it didn't exist only a couple of months ago.

So I am sorry you feel so bad that you have to cancel your order, I think you are giving up one of the most amazing cars out there, and for myself, I can't imagine going back to a plain old ICE and deal with car dealers at that.

That's your decision, and as others have mentioned, it should be up to each of us to make our own conclusions and decisions based on the treatment we get from Tesla after weighing all of the factors involved.

I would be careful critiquing people if they don't want to pay 132,000+ for a vehicle that is not produced exactly as ordered. For that kind of money, certain things should be expected. I completely understand not taking delivery of the vehicle. Switching to ICE may question their belief in EV, but to each is own.
