Right now, the prime left-hand third of the screen is devoted to speedo, odo, AP, and a limited number of "cards."
This squeezes the map and pushes it away from driver's easy vision. Ditto music.
Increasing the variety of cards (Tweak #1) could help.

Slide speedo portion left to narrow it into compact mode.
Slide speedo portion to cause left-side elements to float over map, as top-right controls do. In other words, opaque white background would be replaced by map (appropriately blurred in vicinity of key displays).
